It stands well up the hills,' separated l'rom the wilderness by a few cleared fields, commanding a majestic view of the mountain world. A few rods in front, a huge boulder, surrounded bv a plain board fence, is the tit monument of the fierce old apostle of liberty. At its loot is the grave. The headstone was brought front an old graveyard in New England, where it Stood over (he grave of liis lather. Captain John Brown, who died in New Fork in 177(3. The whole stone,is covered with the family inscriptions: John Brown, executed at Charledtown, \ a., Dec. 2, 1859: Oliver and Watson, lii.s sous, both killed at Harper's Ferry the same year; and his son Frederick, mur dered in . Kansas l>v border ruffians in 185(3. Above (he little grassy inelosure towers the mighty rock, almost as high as the house, and on its summit is cut in massive granite characters the inscription : “John Brown, 1859.” Standing on the top of this monumental rock, for the first time I felt that I comprehended the char acter ol the man whose name it commem orates. I could well understand how such a man, formed in the mould of the old Scotch Covenanters and English Puri litans, brooding over the horn as of sla very, foreseeing the impending struggle for liberty, maddened by the mnrtfer of ids son and friends in Kansas, with the mighty northern hills looking down upon him, the rush of strong rivers, and the songs of resounding tempests, and the mystery ol the illimitatable wilderness all about him, should easily come to think himself inspired to descend, like a moult iain torrent, ami sweep [lie black curse from out the land. 1 reverently raised my hat and sung, “John Brownes body lies a mouldering in the grave; his soul is marching on.” -'ly singing brought out two men, w ho seemed exploring tin* uninhabited place. They took me in their buekboard; and we jolted down to the valley. They told me the estate was nearly all sold,' and the family removed to California: that tho man who owns the house would sell it, w illi a hundred and sixty acres of land, lor fifteen handled dollars, wishing to move to Kansas, (remit Smith’s negroes have all left town, and he is still the pos sessor of miles of this wilderness. Last autumn the homestead was purchased by an association of gentleman in New York, and will doubtless be preserved—perhaps to become a famous place of pilgrimage for our children. My blacksmith friend, w ith whom 1 rode, said, "Everybody in North Elba wanted to sell out and go away. For bis part, he didn't see why people come up there to climb them thun derin’ mountains.” There are probably less than four hundred people now living in this large township ol eighty thousand acres.—From "Adirondack's in August," in the September Xumber of "Old and New.” THE LONG ISLAND CABBAGE EATEK. in a previous number of the Herald ref erence was made to the ravages being in tlieted on the cabbage crop on Long Island by a singular species of insects and the in ability of the farmers to destroy it. So extensive were the ravages that hun dreds of acres are reported as worth less, and yet the destruction continues. The existence of this insert is not confined exclusively to the fields of Long lolaud, but i- reported as being exceedingly preva lent in other portions of this State, New Jersey and Canada. In some eases the plants have been eaten entirely bare, so that tin*.-talks were pulled tip to make way lor a second crop. Thu worm is hatched from the egg of a yellowish but terfly deposited in the heart of the plant, so that the young can feed upon the tender leaves. Thu body ot the worm is a heavy gray, and it attains its full size in front three to four weeks, when it spins a web and fastens itself to the under portion of the leaf, where it remains for upwards of a week and then ednies forth a butterfly of the description above given. They fly lazily and cannot endure high winds, whii li accounts for the fact that sheltered fields arc more numerously destroyed. 'l lie editor of the Jamaica Standard, an extensive and ptatifcicnl faimerjorwaided a species of the insect to the New York State Agricultural Society, and Dr. Fitch, an eminent entomologist, is preparing a report upon the pest, lie is of the opinion that tlie enliivation of cabbage will have to be abandoned for a time, and the doctor does not promise the recommendation of a positive remedy. Mr. O'Donnell has been experimenting on his tann and is oi the opinion that lie has discovered a certain re lief in the shape of a harmless jiowder. He took an ordinary pepper box, and when the dew was falling shook the powder on the plants, and the follow ing rooming not a worm was to be seen, lie has thus ex terminated the insect, from large fields, and the plants already show signs of new life. He also experiments on cauliflower with equal success. The cabbages are tough and unwholesome looking, and the yield and quality w ill be greatly inferior to that of other years.—Sew York Herald.
