local anU State Netos. Mr. James II. Leigh of Ilallowcll, has one of the finest carpet rooms on the river, well filled with carpets of all descriptions. The total number of scholars in Mnine, as returned to the State Superintendent for 1870 is 228,1C7, for 1869 was 226,144, gain 2,024. A long cattle train passed through this city yesterday. Some of the cattle show the ef fects of the protracted drouth. Another large lot of cartridges were shipped yesterday from the U. S. Arsenal in this city to New York. Like the others, their final destination is unknow n here. The Kennebec County Teachers’ Institute will he held in Augusta, Nov. 14, continuing five days. We learn that the State Educa tional Association will hold its annual session here the succeeding week, Nov. 21. Five new cars for the Eastern liailroad passed over the railroad yesterday. They were manufactured in the car shop of Thomas Lainhard, in this city. The cars sent from this shop are first class in every respect. l)r. Eli Grellct Junes of China, Maine, has been appointed Surgeon to the Philadelphia Lying-in Hospital, also Assistant Surgeon of the Eye and Ear Infirmary of that city. Dr. Jones will probably remain in Philadelphia until Spring. The Augusta Water Company seem to mean business. At the last meeting of the directors, Elias Milliken, Esq., was appointed agent, an assessment of ten per cent, voted and the agent instructed to proceed at once to con struct the dam for the lower reservoir. Work was commenced yesterday. In the municipal court yesterday, Dennis Mahoney, for drunkenness, plead guilty, and was committed. Charles J. Gentz, a “rank tmkerous” Frenchman, belonging to the Asy Um. but just returning from a furlough, got the worse for liquor, and manfully owning up to it, was lined and sent to jail for two days. On account ol the sickness of the Principal, Mr. Lambert, there will be a vacation of the high school the present week. The regular vacation season occurring next week, there will consequently be no school for a fortnight. The Orchard street intermediate school has been adjourned until after vacation, the teach er. Miss Church, being confined to her hoard ing house by sickness. The October term of the Supreme Judicial Court will commence in this city to-day at ten o’clock, at which time the new Grand Jury will be empanneled and charged, it is expected that Judge Walton w ill preside. There are a large number of cases to be dis posed of before the trial of lioswell is reach ed, there being 783 cases on the old civil docket, which will take precedence of the criminal docket. As things look now the ac cumulated business will protract the term into the holidays. Mr. Charles M. Bacheller, formerly of this city, who is now in Virginia for the second time, having travelled extensively in that State during the rebellion in the service of his country, sends us u long letter descriptive of the‘‘sacred soil,” extracts from which we think will be of interest to our readers. The letter is dated Keysville, Charlotte county, Va. Mr. Bacheller says : “This place is on the Danville Railroad, 93 miles from Richmond, at the junction of the Roanoke Valley Railroad. The climate is as agreeable as in any other section ot the coun try, north or south. There are not many days hotter in succession than in Maine, and the winters are so mild that plowing can be done at any time. The country is well watered, mill sites plenty. There are some fair looking churches. The New Kngland school system has been introduced here, but it is not yet in good working order. The soil will grow anything that can be raised in the north, but the staple crop is tobacco. Grass c in be raised here eaiscr than at any place 1 ever visited in New Kngland. Three crops hive been taken off this year and now it has a growth on it as heavy as any second crop in Maine. Land here is cheap, and good farms of from 100 to 1000 acres can be had lor a small payment down and the balance on time. The agricultural implements are of the rudest possible character. Nearly all the plantations have plenty of white oak and pine timber growing on them. There are no large rivers in this section, and therefore no fears need be entertained of floods; no swamps, and of course no fever and ague. The war com plety impoverished the country, and farmers are willing to sell a portion ot their lands to obtain money to cultivate the remainder. The far-famed West that every young man talks of emigrating to in order to make his fortune, is sending “heaps” of men here, and they all say that the climate and suil are far better than at the West, and the markets bet ter also. Land is rising rapidly in value. One man who bought 300 acres at Cliristian ville last spring for 80 per acre, told me he had been offered 81b per acre since, and with out any improvements having been. made. People coming down here to purchase lands will receive every possible attention. The people here will give all necessary informa tion. They are anxious to have northern men come here and settle, to improve the land, build railroads and establish schools and churches. Let the young men who are hound to leave good old Maine, and who are crowding into the large cities, come here and occupy some of these farms.” Letter from Farmington. This as you are well aware is one of the very prettiest and flourishing inland villages of Maine. The stores are neat and well filled. Little Blue School and the State Normal, are two very attractive features of the place. They are building a fine church here this sea son, it being for the denomination of Liberal Christians, under the pastoral care of the Rev. Mr. Ilayden. The extension of the Andros coggin Railroad across the river into the val ley, will add much to the convenience and prosperity of the place. The distance lately built is one mile, mostly across an intervale on piles, 2200 in number. The passenger and freight houses are alreudy up and boarded and shingled. The cost of this extension is some 340,000, half of which is paid by the citizens. This Androscoggin road is under excellent management, and has for the past year paid ti per cent, clear of^overnment tax. This will at some future day be the thorough fare from Portland to Quebec, it being some 90 miles nearer than the route travelled now. By looking on the map you will see it is but a short distance to Quebec, and a natural pas sage way has lately been found through the mountain. The authorities of Brest have seized all the arms not contracted for, which arrived in the steamer Ville de Paris. The prices will be fixed by the war department and the arms paid for, and arms reaching France* not ac cording to contract will be seized. Bourbaki was recently tendered the com mand ol all the armies of France, excepting those at Paris and Mete, which be declined, but has accepted command of the army of the North, and goes to Lille to-day to organize bis forces. Bourbaki assures the government that the General commanding the army of the Loire, is entirely capable. There are tin* most contradictory reports concerning the Prussian and French armies near Orleans. Both .-ides are receiving re info re*. ments. Le Faivre ha- returned to Vienna on a special mission from Favre. We are still without official news from La Fort St. Aubin. The Prussia ns have established their head quarters there. The Constitutionel denounces the contem plated project lor the separate federation ol the southern departments, with Marseilles for the capital, and condemn the Provisional Government for not immediately repressing the movement. The French garrison at Weisheim, New Breisach, recently proposed to the com mandant to surrender, but the latter prompt ly refused. London. London, Oct. 17. The Berlin correspond ent of the Times, says that the bombardment cl’St. Cloud is condemned by the semi-official •and eve. ing papers us an act ol vandalism, the very ones who deplore the necessity of bombarding Baris. Among the captives by the Prussians at Orleans a few days ago, were several soldiers belongit g to the body-guard of the republi can government. On the 10th inst., a bomb tired front Fort Mont l)u Yalercn. fell in the bed room ot Napoleon First of St. Cloud, destroying the famous mirrors. A French flag captured at Metz lias been forwarded to King William before Paris, by Prince Frederick Charles. The epidemic in and around Metz is grow ing worse. , The Hamburg American steamer Thurm gid, while proceeding from Greenock to Hamburg, was pursued by several vessels of the French fleet, and in escaping, she ran down and sunk a collier. There were no lives lost. The Frane-Tireurs near Epinal on the loth checked the advance of the Prussians in that direction, in an engagement which lasted 3 hours. A squad of 30 Uhlans were repulsed by the Frattc-Tireurs at Laurent Do Evox, on the leyt hank of the Loire. There is reason to believe that the army which captured Soissons, i!2,000 strong, will attack the other strong places in northern France. The Journal this morning publishes an appeal in favor of the Pope, which has just been issued by the Catholics of the various nations now as sembled here. The report that Gen. The rumor that negotiations are pending for pence on the basis ot the cession ot Alsace and Luxemburg to Prussia, is also believed to he well founded, and it is stated that another interview between Bismarck and Favre to that end will soon he held. Berlin. Berlin. Oct. 17. Soissons was captured on Sunday morning, and at 3 o'clock in the ut tornoon the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg en tered the town at the head ol'his army. Ayer s Sarsaparilla, fob PtiUFina the blood, l no reputation this ex cellent medicine enjoys, is derived from its cures, many of which are truly marvellous Inveterate cases of Scrofulous dis ease, where the system seemed vaturuted’ with corruption, lia\e bceu lmrilled and cured by it. Scrofulous affections and disorders, which were ag gravated by the scrofu lous contamination until incy were pamiuiiy auiimng, nave neon radically cured in such great numbers in almost every sec tion of the country, that the public scarcely need to be informed of its virtues or uses. Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive enemies of our race. Oden, this unseen and unfelt tenant of the organism undermines the constitution, ami invites the attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases, without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again, it seems to breed infection throughout the bod v, ami then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop into one or other of its hideous forms, either on the surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber- \ cles may be suddenly deposited in the lungs or heart, or tumors formed iu the liver, or it shows ; its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcer ations on some part of the bodv. Hence the occa sional use of a bottle of this Sarsaparilla is ad visable, even when no active symptoms of disease appear. Persons afflicted with the following com plaints generally find immediate relief, and, at length, cure, by the use of this S.tllS.I I'.t H11 LA: St. Anthony's Fire, Hose or I rysijn las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Sraltl Head, Jlinyirorm, Sore Eyes, Sore Ears, and other eruptions or visible forms of Scrofulous disease. Also in the more concealed forms, us Dyspepsia, Dropsy, Heart Disease, Fits, Epilepsy, .Xeurafyia, and the various Fteerous affections of the muscu lar and nervous systems. Syphilis or Venereal and Mercurial Diseases are cured by it, though a long time is required for subduing these obstinate maladies by any medicine. Hut long continued use of this medicine will euro the complaint. Lcucorrhaea or IHiitcs, I ferine Ulcerations, and Female Diseases, are com monly soon relieved and ultimately cured by its purifying and invigorating effect. ’Minute Direc tions for each case are found iu our Almanac, sup plied gratis. Rheumatism and Rout, when earned by accumulations of extraneous matters in the blood, yield fiuiekly to it, as also J.irer Complaints, Tvrjiidity, Congestion ovInflam mation of the Liver, and* laundire, when arising, as they often do, from the rankling poisons in the blood. This SARSAPARILLA is a great re storer for the strength and vigor of the system. Those w ho are Languid and Listless, Despon dent, Sleepless, and troubled with \errons Ap prehensions or Fears, or any of the affections symptomatic of Weakness, will And immediate relief and convincing evidence of its restorative ' power upon trial.
