(HUNT'S AND LEE'S AKMIES. The London Standard of Get. 12 pub lishes tlie following letter from Gen. 15a 1 dean : My attention has recently been drawn to an editorial artiele in The Standard for l h i. -I, which is devoted to Gen. Uubort E. j l.err 1 have of course no right, and eer i t.iiuly no de.-ire, to deprecate the estimate put by the Standard upon either the per -oiiul or the military character ot Gen. ' Lee : but as the artiele in question contains , everal statements evidently based upon 'mi-information, I venture to a-k that you '■ will allow me to correct them in your eol- , j minis. 1 have the les- hesitation in inak- . i iag tiii- request, because my principal i ! authority lor the proposed corrections is that of Gi a. Lee himself. All the original documents still in exist ence, which once belonged to the South- 1 era WarOlliee are now in the possession 1 of the l aited States Government; for, ' very soon after the capture of ilichmoud, they were, by the express direction ot ' Mr. .b lferson lhivis, surrendered by Gen. : .loseph E. .Johnston to Gen. Sherman. As ■Military and private Secretary to Gen. < .rant Horn the time when lie t >ok com mand of the armies of the United States until ho became l’resident, 1 have had for ars unrestricted access, not only to his own ollli ial papers, but to all these eap ttir. d arehiuves, and have bad occasion to study them more closely than any living ' men. In the artiele of the Standard to which I rcler i- declaim!—doubtless in good’faith. for the declaration has been made before and in other quarters—that Gen. Lee, at the beginning of the Wilderness campaign i had but u(.i,(mu men under his command, while G. ii, Grant had three times as many. : The official documents do not confirm this statement. The field return ot Lee, dated nearest the lir.-t battles of the Wilderness, is that of April 20, lbtil: this gives .j;i, MU iii.'ii present for duty, but does not in 1 flnde the strength of Longstreel’s corps. Now 1 ongslreet joined Lee after April 20. and prior to the battle which occurred in the la-l week of May. llis field return of date nearest to the battle shows 18,1387 j.resent for duty, making 72,27s men un der Lee at the battle ot the Wilderness, file whole force present for duty under Grant, as -lmwn by bis field returns of the -aine date a- Lee'.-, Was tts.ulll, 1. aving a preponderance in favor of Grant of about 2f.,on0 men, ora very little more than one third. The calculation that Grant had three times as many men as Lee has been ob-1 tained by omitting Longstreet's corps al together I rum tile estimate, and by giving; only Lee's loree present tor duty on the Kapidan ; while, in reckoning Grant’s numbers,.not only the present for duty are ; counted, hut those constituting what, in ; military parlance, is called the total, 'which includes the sick, the extra-duty ; men. ami various others, invariably amounting, in any large army, to many thousand'. Manife-tlv, either Lee's total j should b« compared u itli Grant's total, or | Gram's present for duly with Lee's pres ent lor duty, lint besides this, in order to make out (Irani's armt three times as large as Lee's, Grant'* two forces in the Valley ot \ iiginia and on the .lames River (each at least one hundred miles trout the Wil derness) are included in the estimate of hi- strength : while the troops which Lee had in trout of these separate forces of Grant are left out of the calculation al together. I repeat that in the battle of the j \\ llderties-. Lee had about 72,000 men en gaged, while Grant had its,(too present for duty—according to the confidential field I returns made at the time by each General J to his own (ioverninent, when no General I ] would intentionally misstate or mislead. ! Again, it is stated in tic Standard article of the .'it11 in-t. that I.moved out of Rich-, i moiul, alti a its tall, with 2ti,ttOO. 11 is last In id return was made in February, 180.7; | it i- -igued in his on n hand, and gives .7:1.-; oill present for duty, and 7.'5.:it'.i total. This dm s not include the local militia of Richmond, nor the crews ot the gunboat in the .Loin - River, both of which forces j were always put into tbo trenches in an j a-'nult, an I many of whom, doubtless, mmol mil of Richmond with Lee. To-1 g.- her they numbered, at least, sev eral thousands. In the battle of Ifive Forks |, and the suliseiptent as-aults on IVterslntrg, : t which resulted in the capture of Rich mond. Leo may have lost 20,<Mm> men, Imt this would have left hint by any computa tion, at least 10,ooo troops with which lie! tied trout tlte fallen capital. Ilurr moti', tlie article in quest ion states tint s.iii'ii incii were surrendered by Lee ... A;i]'oniato.\ Court House. 'I lie official reeoril >1 iow that 27,10) soldiers were ae tually paroh .1 at that place, beside the tens of t housands al o belonging to Lee's army, u lio came in afterward and \ iehled them selves prisoners of war. Lach of these ’ gave hi- separate written parole. 1 was present at the surrender of Gen. Lee. The ■ event took place in a small room of what ' seemed an ordinary farm-house, ami in the ] ... fewer than 2" persons. After , Gell. Lee had signed tile capitulation he immediately requested Gen. Grant to sup- j ply tie' prisoners with food, as they had been living on two ears of Indian corn a I day for several days. Grant at once consented, and inquired of Leo how many men lie had in his command. Lee | replied that lie could not tell; lie had received no returns for several days, his ‘ i roup- had been killed or wounded, or cap-1 tnred in 'tu b numbers that he could not es limatc his actual force. Grant inquired if 25,000 rations would be enough, and he 1 answered that he thought they would ; 25,-1 . t *« a) lift Ions were accordingly issued the I same day by Grant's officers to Lee's armv. 1 This therefore was Lee's idea of his own numbers on the day of his surrender, al though, as proved by the paroles, it was too small. I'hu original documents from which the above figures are taken are now on tile in the War office at Washington, blit official : copies of them all are now in niv nossess I '<»,• ! SUSPENDED ANIMATION. 'riie Washington Chronicle of the 24th hat he following in relation to a singular case of luspended animation. "On the 20th instant Ella, second daughter >i the late Captain li. and Eliza Ererer, aged ■ixteen years, apparently died at Homestead, I'rince tieorge county, Maryland, of typhoid ever. Her remains were brought to this city uid placed in the care of Mr. N. C. Draper, a friend of her family,) who resides on Thir ccntli -treet, near I), southwest, for inter nent. Yesterday evening all the preparations or her funeral had been made—the hearse lad arrived, the clergyman who was to preach he funeral sermon was present, and th# riends had assembled to assist in the last ad rites. The coffin lids were opened, and hose who wished were invited to take a fare veil glance at the features they would see no nore in this life. A lady (a particular friend d the deceased) clasped her hand, and was istonished, and almost shocked, to discover hat it was perfectly limber, as in life and hat a slight warmth was perceptible about the lalms of the hands. She immediately gave mtice of the fact, and a physician (Dr. C. 1*. jrifiith) was summoned; and now the hearts if those who had a moment before been bowed lown with grief were lightened by the hope hat the vital 6park had not fled from the body if their young friend. l Me greatest excitement prevailed tor a ime, but when Dr. Griffith arrived he order 'll the hearse to be sent away, and request 'd the persons assembled to return to heir homes. No doubt but that prayer* a* ervidly in earnest ns ever were offered to the lirone of the Most High were breathed forth from every heart in that assemblage for the success of the physician in his effort* to re call the life-throb bauk to that pulseless form. Dr. G. applied every remedy which the na ture of the case demanded, and by the aid of the galvanic buttery succeeded, after a long time, in producing a pulse of five beats to the Minute, but he was finally compelled to de list upon the sad conviction that all attempts it resuscitation would be fruitless. It is the opinion of nearly every one that ,liis is a clear case of suspended animation, mil that if medical assistance could have been endured at an earlier period the unfortunate roung lady might have been resuscitated unfortunately, on account of the fact that die was brought here on the steamer, the lack if the rigidity of her limbs and the warmth if her hands could not be discovered, (the mffin lids of course being closed.) It is fear ful to think that there was a possibility of saving the lile of the young lady by an earlier ippliance of restoratives, but it is by no means certain that her life could have been saved even by this, for there are many in stances on record where bodies have retained ivarmth and pliancy for several days after lentil. As before stated, at 8 o’clock last light Dr. Griffith pronounced Miss Frerer ■ertainly dead, aril her funeral will take dace this evening. ORGANS & MELODEONS ! Messrs.
