LETTER FROM MISSOURI. New Harmony, Mo., Oct. 25. Dear Journal : This place is about half way between the cities of Mexico and Louis nniu, a place which one might term as rail road killed since the Louisania and Mexico road, now in process of construction, passes four miles north of it. There are two gro ceries and a post office in it, one with a sign informing the passers by that “FOTaters” are sold here, while a little farther up reads, “Waggon shop by J. S. Branstetter & Son, & reparing done at siiort notice.” As the sign reads, reparing must be the third member of the firm. The city of Louisania is located on the west side of the Mississippi, contains about four thousand inhabitants, of whom a large number were property before Uncle Abe’s Emancipation Proclamation. Five lumber yards well stocked, proclaim that the article is in good demand. Flour mills, wine and whiskey distilleries, with other things common to eastern cities, go to make up tho labors and interests of the place. There is a fine school building in the upper part of the city large enough to contain twelve depart ments. I regret that my time and health did not permit me to visit it. The city as viewed from Clinton Heights is well laid out and ap pears from this distance to be crowded. There is a sort of sleepy dullness about the place to one accustomed to the noisy bustle of the cities east. One meets Reb soldiers and officers everywhere, but in all cases they are polite and affable unless political subjects are broached. The Radicals are extremists on their side as the Democracy on theirs. A new party composed of “Bolters” from the Radical party, styling themselves “Liberals,” support Col. Dyer, who favors enfranchise ment, and goes against Protective Tariff. I enclose the Republican State and county ticket with their platform. There is no sub ject now demanding so much attentien and interest as politics. The election comes off Nov. 8. Joseph. A “SELL OX DICKENS. In his “American notes” Mr. Dickens sketched in his best sarcastic vein a man whom lie encountered on a steamboat, and of whom he wrote : There was never such a curious man. I wore a great fur coat at that time, and before we were well clear of the wharf he questioned me concerning it, anditsprice, and where 1 bought it, and when, and what fur it was and what it cost. And then lie took notice of my watch, and asked what that cost, and w hether it was a French watch, and where I got it, and how 1 got it, and whether L bought it or had it given to me, and how it went, and where the keyhole was, and when I wound it, every night or every morning, and whether I ever forgot to wind it at all, auil if 1 did what then? Where I had been to last, and where I was going to next, and where I was going to alter that, and had i seen the President, and what diil he say, anil what did I say, and what did he say when I had said it! Eh? Lor now! do tell! A correspondent of the Philadelphia Press, however, says: The man w ith a light, fresh-colored face, and a pepper-and-salt suit of clothes, w ho w as the most inquisitive felllow that can possibly lie imagined,” lived here in lt>12, and lias since been sheriff of Centre county, lie and a party of friends were returning home form llarrisburg, and, being naturally of a jovial turn of mind, •‘made game” of Dickens the entire trip. The sheriff was the leading spirit of tho party, and furnished them uninterrupted amusement by his semi-idiotic manner, and his persistent cross-examination of Mr. Dickens. The story as published is not too strongly drawn. The sheriff played the native American to perfection, ami, as the event showed, completely sold the English party and retinue. When the •■American Notes" first appeared people about here recalled the sheriff's original version of the incident and were intense ly amused. Money Cannot Buy It!
