The grassy street we entered was silent.

way. Opposite were workshops, and
! there were other buildings of which we

| house, called “The Home," ornamented
j with the only vanity of the premises—a
i low steeple containing a hell. Why was
! the hell on the ineeting-honse ? If we could
I ring it, would anv life he evoked ?
I he great buildings stared at us with
(dosed doors and windows. For any evi
dence of humanity, we might as well have
been in Pompeii. Had some sudden ca
lamity swept aw ay the community, or was
it perhaps the hour of meditation? We
waited, we watched, we listened. The
silence was profound. It was afternoon,
and ail the place was Hooded with sun
light. Summer had not yet come, but
there was premonition of it in the soft gray
«ky flecked with blue—the veritable color
oft'a'sar's eyes—and in the wandering
w ind that moved the low grass gently and
had in it yet a shiver • f spring. It was a
i day w hen the south side of a friendly barn,
j where the hens are burrowing in the warm
-oil, is the most comfortable place in the
world.
Had we come this long w ay merely to
see a reed shaken in the w ind ? Xav, wc
had come to see a Shaker, and behold, no
Shaker, not even the least that is. vvasvis
j ilde. It occurred to us to return to what
appeared to he tin* "store,'’ and seek in
formation. It w as closed fast like the oth
er houses, as if the customers were de
sired, and it was only after persistent
knocking that the door opened part wav
and gave to our view the vision of a thin,
tall, angular female in scant, plain skirts,
whose severe face was neither an invita
tion to the monastic life nor a promise of
information. We were put in the position
of intruders upon something l oly and un
attractive. But what right had we (child
ren stained with the world) to expect civ
illy and an angelic face in a person set to
guard the portals of celibacy and non-re
sistance,—n woman who for fifty years
had been hardening into the attitude of
setting her face against the world ? Words
were not wasted on us. Could we enter
the house ?

Anil we felt that we were not worthy to
do so. Could we have the key to "the
meeting-house ?
•■Nay.”
Ami the refusal seemed just. Could we
go into any of the houses?
“Nay."
The door was now only a eraek open.
< 'onld we see anybody?
“Find the Elder!”"
And the dour shut deeidedlv. Kven a
sweet virgin may get sour by standing too
long.
The advice to tinil the F.lder was good,
but elders were as scarce as youngsters.
No person was in sight. We lounged
down by the wash-house, alongside of
which ran a sparkling brook, noiseless be
tween its grassy banks. I n the next building
we heard a hammering. Here, then, was
life. It seemed to be some sort of a work
shop. \\ c entered. Nothing on the first
floor. Above, we at last found a door
that would open- It opened into a shoe
maker's shop occupied by a single man.
“Ilrother," wo said, “can you
“I ain't no brother.’’
“You are not a Shaker?"
• Not much. I'm a shoe-maker. Hired."
“Where, then, are the Shakers?"
“I dunno; in the fields, may be,” and
the godless man slammed away on hi® lap
stone to the litter destruction of further
conversation.
We went down discomfited. This, we
thought, is a strange eoninmui y, where
nobody will commune. Suppose we
w anted to join, how could we do it? Since
one cannot lie born into it. how does it get
in '.1 The great barns behind the houses
well1 invitingly open, but they were as
empty as the houses appeared to he. ,\ot
a “moo," nor a “baa," nor a bleat to be
beard. I tliink we should have given up
the quest of truth, and gone away con
vinced that the shakers had all lieen alt

if we had not at the moment espied a little
school-house hidden in the trees, anti Iwm
pretty little girls in the yard in front of it.

quaint in speech. Hut the interview had
not gone fa: when it was interrupted by
an appearance that made shakers of U8 all.
The school-marm stood in the door-way.
Mother Ann! looked you so in sweetness
of y our spring-time, when, perchance, you
stood in the porch of the Manchester cot
tage among the Knglish roses? Perhaps
not. 1 think not, then, so, unworldly fair.
The school-marm wore a white cap, a
white apron over her short gray skirt, and
a lavender silk kerchief was crossed over
her breast. The formality of this neat
simplicity caught a grace from the refined
purity of her face. The maid stood tn the
doorway w ith one small hand raised on
the easing: 'lie spoko to the children . she
greeted u< in u voice of perfectly modula
ted sweetness, and regarded us with Iter
large tnisttnl eyes.
