BUTCiat Sect. » the ice cutting business, but no one man has accomplished more in this line than Minister Bowen. An eminent New York arcihtect has been glorifying the memory of Tweed because that gentleman in the height of his unsavory career as boss of New Yot’k was so farsighted and public spirited as to provide some of the beautiful parks and boulevards that now adorn the city. It may be a proper opportunity to give the devil his due, but somehow a halo above the head of Boss Tweed seems a grotesque misfit. Results of the Venezuelan Trouble. The Venezuela affair, which has been so prominently before the people of three continents for several months, is now taken from the center of the stage. The long negotiations which have seemed at times hopelessly complicated have resulted in a notable triumph for American diplomacy, and the details of straightening out the tangle are now in the hands of the Hague tribunal. Venezuela has been saved from in vasion and occupation by foreign forces and the possible partition of its terri tory; arrangements are made for the payment of its just debts; South America has been shown where to look for the only great nation that is really friendly to it, and the powers of Europe have been offered several things for their serious consideration. The United States comes out of the affair with much gained and nothing lost. The danger of complications in volving war was avoided by careful diplomacy, and at the tame time the position of this country was main tained with the greatest consistency and skill. It is worth much to have received such /outst)oken and un equivocal recognition of the Monroe doctrine as has been forced from the powers of Europe. That doctrine has been much strengthened by the affair, and the effects of the settlement of the Venezuelan question will be fai reaching. Not the least of the ad vantages to the United States from the imbroglio is the warmer friendship now felt for this country by Venezuela and the republics of South America. It has dissipated any sus picion on their part that this country was reserving the southern continent for its own exploitation. fc.nsrl.and and Germany will secure satisfaction of their claims in Venezuela, which was the only ac knowledged reason for their demon stration off its coast, and in that respect the outcome of the affair should please them, but there are rea sons to believe that they are not par ticularly happy over the outcome of the trouble. Italy will also get its money without having to work for it, as the others did. England was drawn into an alliance with Germany which proved most unpopular at home. Both England and Germany will suffer not a little in the loss of Venezuelan trade. Germany is particularly humiliated by the loss of prestige of its navy, caused by the very poor marksmanship of its gunners. The discreditable exhibition will no doubt give an impetus to Em peror William’s policy of a stronger and better navy. Especially unpleas ant to the German government, we doubt not. was the fact that it was outpointed and overmatched by Ameri can diplomacy. Europe, however, is rfo longer throwing sneers at what it once called “the shirtsleeves diplomacy" ot America. As for Venezuela, it is very lucky to got cut the trouble as it does. The prestige of President Castro is much strengthened. His master stroke was in making United States Minister Her bert W. Bowen his agent to conduct ihe negotiations with the allies and Mr. BOwen gets more individual glory out or It all than any other man. Mr. Bowen achieved signal diplomatic victories, obtaining the restoration of the Venezuelan navy, preventing the im position of impossible demands and Settling all questions between A enezuela and foreign powers. The Caracas government will, therefore, enjoy for the first time in its history freedom from international complica tions. With his foreign relations clear, "MAKES PROPER DIET" Tj| PLEASING, President Castro will be able to devote himself to wiping- out every vestige of the Matos revolution. His navy is es sential to this end. On the part of the intelligent people of Venezuela there has been created a genuine fear that occupation of Venezuelan territory is the ultimate objective of Germany, ar.d they will seek to prevent the de velopment of questions with that coun try and will keep alive hostility which will be felt by the commerce of the people of the European empire. At the same time they will urge the mainte nance of the most cordial relations with the United States in order that this country may not accuse them of in gratitude. Venezuela should profit by the lesson. It pays dearly for not recognizing its debts and making an effort to pay them, and, with all the othpr South American republics, it can appreciate what would happen to its territorial integrity if the United States ceased to support the Monroe doctrine with a powerful navy. The new president of the Boston Bartenders’ Union is William B. Ki;k ptltrick. a reader and admirer of Shakespeare and the Brownings, who can talk Interestingly on literary as weil as on more practical subjects.— Boston Globe. The announcement that Mr. Kirk patrick is the new president of tile Boston Bartenders’ Union is a matter of news and doubtless of much interest to many of the readers of the Globe, but why in the world was it neces sary to add those last lines to the paragraph? Is it possible that in these Inter days there are some Bostonians who arc not readers and admirers of Shakespeare and the Brownings? And if Mr. Kirkpatrick’s devotion to them was to be mentioned, why was not his faithful allegiance to Emerson and transcendentalism aiso chronicled? The old Whittier homestead is to be preserved, thanks mainly to the $10,000 received from the recent sale of Whit. Her manuscripts and letters. Prices ranging from $800 downward were paid by private collectors for these relics. It is a pity that they could not have been kept in one collection, but the cause in which the sacrifice was made is a good one. The price of $540 was paid for the original manuscript of “In School Days." that exquisite little pic ture of the old red sehoolhouse and the little gir! who loved the hoy too much to go above him when she spelled the word he missed. It is a poem that has touched a million hearts, a note of ten derness and sympathy that strikes a deathless chord. We don't know in just what depart ment of the Commoner it appeared, but Editor Bryan's cordial mention of Governor Garvin of Rhode Island as a presidential possibility is one of the richest bits of humor to which the pub lic has been treated since Devery’s comments on Hill appeared.
