Joseph E. Felt's “Historical Ac
coatt cf Massachusetts Currency*

this kind of money as one of the first
cf the Colonial issues. The Conti
nental Congress in 1775 apportioned
among the cotones each st* share of
the general government's expenses.
The issue of Continental money soon
being exhausted by the colonies, if

raising of funds to meet these and
other expenses. The General Court
of Massachusetts on Aug. 33, 1775.
after several weeks of consideration!
on the subject, authorized an emis
sion of 1W.W pounds in paper. This
money become known as “Sword in 1
Hand Money,’ on account of the*

this must be a rare specimen of one
