RAYMOND HAVENS i A GREAT PIANIST ■ A Mason and Hamlen grand piano i( weighing a ton—one of the~> largest I and finest made—has been shipped ? from Boston for the use of Raymond ' Havens and Lucy Marsh at the city j'halt concert Thursday evening. An expert tuner from the well-known firm, will accompany the piano to Augusta. Music teachers, students and music level's from all over Central Maine are looking forward with great pleas ure to hearing Raymond Havens who ranks as one of America’s greatest pianists. They have a double treat in store in being able to hear a re markable prima donna soprano, Lucy Marsh, who will appear with him. Jennie M. Case, New York’s well known accompanist of famous con cert singers, will act as accompanist for Miss Marsh. Havens is one of those brilliant artists who holds hearers spellbound by his wonderful skill. He has something more than mere technic; he has poetic feeling and refined sen timent, and littB learned the rare art of singing a melody on the piano. As an exponent of Chopin, Mr. Havens haft few equals on the concept stage. , There are certain traits in Mr. Hav* en8’ style of playing that ate con* spicuous. For instance, he prepares his climaxes with the most ingenious use of the pedal so that when the culmination is reached the whole pi ano seems to sound. He has made a careful study of the dynamic possi bilities of the piano, for'he never forces the tone to harshness, and yet his loud passages suggest an orches tral effect. i Mr. Heavens has marked originali ty, refined sentiment, and good taste in his interpretations. His style is mature and authoritative, and he knows how to arrange a well bal j anced program—one that will delight ; every concert goer. He is in the full est sense an artist. Any who have neglected to secure reserved seat tickets (all seats are reserve^) are reminded that the earlier the selection the better the location. The saje is very large with every indication of a capacity house. Augusta people evidently appreciate the magnitude, of the offering.—Adv.
