W. Cloud, were to have started last night for a trip to Mt. Carmel, on business connected with this road. A force of men will short ly be set at work on the read in this county, and by the first of September the work on the grade will be very active. Messrs. Morrill and Cloud will return by the first of next week. The Moulders' Picnic. The Moulders' picnic, yesterday, was a complete succo33, all who attended it enjoying themselves to the utmost. The Cornet Band played their best, and delighted the excursionists while on the . boat; and Cssenberg's band furnished the music for the dancing, which was freely indulged in. Not the slightest disturbance occurred to mar the pleasure of the occasion. A FianT and Three Suits. A man named Watson, bought a load of hay from a man named Carr, yester day, and when Carr had delivered about half of the load Watson claim ed that it was sot sound hay, and re fused to accept any more of it. ITc not only shut tbe hay loft door, but threatened fight, whereupon Carr knocked him down on suspicion that he would cut his threat into execu tion. . . The result is that Carr . sued before Justice Walker, for the prioe of his hay, the balanco of which ho deliv ered beside the barn, after the door was shut on him. The jury disagreed, and it will have to be tried again. The collections for the German Relief Fund in the Third Ward have reached $540, while in the Second, only about $50 have been collected. The contract for the sewer exten sion, mentioned in yesterday's Jour nal, was awarded to Messrs. Allen & Shea, for $0,900. The programme for the exhibition in aid of the Relief Fund, embraces "Die Wachl am Iihein," a translation of which appeared in yesterday's Journal. A kind husband and father in Row leytown amused himself last night 1 8 the fellow did at the wake of Mick Finnegan, viz: "lie broke all the legs off the furniture." At last accounts he was astride of a stove with a ham mer in his hand. The negroes used to say, ." White man werry unsartin," but from the uncertainty attending jury trials, one would be led to believe that the " un sartainty " increases with the number of the white men. Pugsby adds that tbe same is true of base ball. One of the Gipsy women in the camp at Independence, having quar reled with her husband, demanded a settlement. A hasty inventory of their goods and chatties was taken, and the woman takirg out her pocket book, paid the man what money was necessary to make his chattels up to half the capital stock, picked up her bundle and started for the South. Miss Schmid, who has volunteered to assist on the occasion, has won a fine reputation in Europe as a singer, and this will be her first appearance before an American audience. It is to be hoped that the house will be full to overflowing. Counterfeits Afloat. The cir culars of Ferguaon & Co., Jacobs & Co., Smith & Co., and other villain dealers in counterfeit money that have been sown broad cast over this country are beginning to bear more fruit. Yesterday a man went into a gro cery, kept by one Wilkie, near the corner of Fourth Street and Fulton Avenue, and bought fifty cents worth of coffee, and paying for it with a ten dollar note, received $0 50 in change. Just as he was about to leave the houB3, Mr. Wilkie called out to him, to wait, that he did not believe the note was good, when the man an carlesslv: "Oh yea it is : I Just got it at the bank," and passing out he disappearca. How fortunate it is that Congress or the Legislature, or ths Common Coun cil have not established a high stand ard by which to gauge the sanity of the citizens. It is also fortaoate that we are not all constituted judges of our neigh bor'a sanity, for if we were, the only publio buildings that would be need ed, would be lunatic asylums; for, notwithstanding the scripture injunc tion to the contrary, I kr aw that all men have at some time or other pro nounced their neighbors fools, and most of them qualify the decision with an adjective that does not look well in print. In Illinois several years ago, the Hon. C. V. Dyer, committee on puns and punishments, of the third house of the Legislature, introduced a bill into that body, to provide proper pun ishment for those who made fools of themselves. . The minute the title was announced, a member from Clinton County, arose and denounced it as a revolutionary measure, and said he had left Massa chusetts on account of the attempt to abridge his liberties, and he would resist it in Illinois, to the bitter end. A member from Tazewell County said it was a privilege that he had en joyed under the territorial goverment, and one that had been guaranteed them as a part of the privileges they had enjoyed as the Territory of Indi ana, and as the right in that State had not been abridged, he would re sist it here. Others opposed it as unconstitu tional, beoause it might interfere with tbe free exercise of religion, and de prive people of their innocent amuse ments. Hence it was defeated. As I never heard of any statutary provision for punishing fools in this State, and for the further reason that the privilege is oo liberally exercised, I presume that no such penalty is prescribed. When Mrs. Elam DeGoIger insist ed on naming her five boys James Edward, Thomas Edward, Edward Henry, John Edward, and Edward William, Mrs. Cooley said she had a mania for the name of Edward; yet Mrs. Cooley had several daughters named Mary Ann, Mary Jane, Rebec ca Jane, and Eliza Jane, and she was as scrupulous about the exclusion of contractions as if they were heresies, but Mrs. Cooley refused to speak to Mrs. Dr. Golger for the space of a week, because Mrs. Dr. G. said her girls were "humbly" enough without giving them "them" names. The way they became reconciled was: Mrs. Tweed, a neighbor, had named her boy William Henry Harrison McCul lough Tweed; the boy died, of course; and then both ladies were sorry they had laughed at and called Mrs. T. a fool. Another form of mania, akin to that of Mrs. Toodles in buying the Thompsonian door plate, is that which leads people to gather relics until a room in their houses resembles a pawn shop; with a sword of Major Whistlewaite, or some other waiter, which, with about 909 others, is the only one left; the epauletts of General Bur goyne, bearing a manufacturers stamp with the date 1840 in small letters on tbe under fide of the shell: autosrraph letters of Washington. Jefferson, and others, written on pa- Eer whose water mark shows it to ave been made a quarter of a cen tury after the death of the supposed writer, and which eccentricities and inconsistencies the maniacs are aware of but unable to consider as in the least impairing their value, and their conclu iont may not be far wrong. Another class are those young men and women, who on slender incomes, and much more slender intellect, en deavor to support a reputation for being fashionably blue. Perhaps you will excuse me for be ing a little sore on this subject, for I particularly hate this class of maniacs, one of them having faid a few even ings since, ju3t as I finished an ex ceedingly droll story: "The first time I heard that I thought it was funny."
