FOUR DA YS LA TER FHO 3Vr EUROPE. Arrival of flic Pacific. The Collins steamship Pacific, Capt. Nye, from Liverpool 18th ult., arrived at New York Monday forenoon. There is absolutely no news from the seat of war, the despatches, such as they are, be ing altogether conflicting. It is< however, authentic, that up to the 9tli nothing had been accomplished. The allies now number 90,000 men in the Crimea. They occupy a strong position south of Sebastopol, and have all their seige appara tus landed. MenschikotFcontinues to hold the field north of Sebastopol with 30,000 men, expecting a reinforcement of 30,000 more. Latest dates state that Gen. Canrohert had ordered the Russian outposts to be driven in on the 9th, and seige. batteries erected. Ten thousand additional French troops arc to be shipped immediately for Marseilles, to the Crimea. It is confirmed that the Baltic fleet will re turn home without further operations. Umar Pasha is preparing to operate on three points, the Pruth, Debrudscha and the Sea. Russia is amassing troops on the Austrian frontier. The latest despatch from Lord Raglan states that the Allies would open their fire upon Se bastopol about the 9th. The total Russian forces available for the defence of Sebastopol are 90,000, the same as those of the Allies both land and sea force. The allied fleet is positively on its way home from the Baltic. Rumors are gathering strength that Eng land and France are about re-organizing the Independent Kingdom of Poland, or consider ing its practicability. China letters mention that three attempts had been made to capture Canton, but without success. An attempt to effect a compromise with the insurgents had failed. Fighting con tinued at Shanghae, without any decisive re sults. The cholera is abating at London. The deaths of last week were only 250. Awful Collision on tiieGreat Western Railroad.—In the Detroit Free Press we find some particulars of the terrible collision on the Great Western Railroad, on Friday morning. The accident occurred on Friday morning at about 5 o'clock, a short distance East of Bap tist Creek, the collision being between the reg ular passenger train and a gravel train. The passenger train was due at 11.30 P. M. on Thursday night, but w as delayed by an acci dent to the engineer, and the collision is said to have occurred through the carelessness of a switchman. At 11 A. M. on Friday, the bod ies of25 men, 11 women, and 11 children had been recovered, 3nd there were 21 men, 11 women, and 10 children badly wounded. An Infernal Machine in New York — The telegraph to the Gazette gives an accouut of an infernal machine, which exploded at Earl’s Hotel, in Park Row, on Saturday af ternoon, about 2 o'clock. No person was ranch injured, but the building was much shaken, damage being done lo the amount of about $2 000. The despatch says : * On searching amongst the rubbish, the parts of an infernal machine were discovered, which, when put together, presented an imple ment of the most simple construction, and at the same time of the most deadly character.— Attached to a spring was a twelve and a half pound keg, and a one pound canister of pow der, which was ignited by a pistol, the trigger of which was, bv a simple contrivance, attach ed to one of the bags enclosing it, which was of common russet, and so contrived as not to go off when both of the handles wero held. A violent pull of either of them put the interior works in motion. No clue has yet been ob tained as to the manner in which the bag ob tained admission into the hotel, nor the reason why it was placed there. The strong pre sumption is that the hag was sent to the hotel for some person to call for.’ Launched in Bowdoinham, on Tuesday last, from the yard of S. V. Given, Esq , a fine ship of 1050 tons. She is owned by S. V. & J. O. Given and R. Butterfield. Capt. John O. Given commands her. The Wickham Tragedy. The circum stances of the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Wick ham, at Southhold, Long Island, are familiar to all. The murderer, Nicholas Beehelian, has been tried, found guilty, and sentenced to be hung. The sentence will he pronounced a just one by all who know the atrocity with which the deed was committed. At the sen tence, Beeheehan behaved like a demon. He denied committing the murders, and attempted to criminate two other men. When the sen tence had been passed, he exclaimed to Judge Strong, a white haired and venerable man, ‘I thank you, sir, I'll be dead in a week and leave you my hair fora wig.’—Boston Journal. Raymond, in the 23d year of her age,—leaving an affectionate husband atul a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. The subject of this notice was beloved by all who knew her: l> issessing an amiable and pleasant disposition, her company was sought by all her acquaintances. Her health began per ceptibly to decline in the early part of the past Spring, and every effort which medical skill, nursing, attendance and exercise in the open air was made, hut without effect. That fatal, though Haltering disease, which carries off so many of our young frien is and companions, had marked its vic tim as its own. About three weeks since, she became con vinced—and the fears of tier husband and friends coincided in the belief—that her stay was short on earth. Her thoughts were turned to the prospect before her. As she was always of a calm, contemplative mind, she at or.ee saw there was nought on earth to satisfy and sustain the soul save a religious trust and faith in Christ as her Saviour, and in God as her Heavenly Father. The hopes and prom ises of the gospel became hers by faith, and she seemed as one Divinely influenced from above, and was led to ex claim_“Who have 1 in Heaven but Tliee, and there is none I desire but Thee.” About ten days previous toiler death, she made distribution of various tokens of regard to her husband ami friends, gave directions relative to her funeral, and all this time she was yet able to walk her room, and take exercise occasionally by riding out. Then she said— “I am ready to go—my hope is in Christ.” She would fre quently anxiously enquire of her friends how long they thought she must yet live, “ for I long to go and dwell with Jesus i” and to sec and hear her few could refrain from saying, “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end he like this.” She retained her reason to the last, and her last whispers were “I am happy.” Her remains were conveyed to Edgecorab, to the home of her childhood, and from there to the church, where a very impressive and appropriate discourse was preached, by Rev. Mr. Brooks, of this city, from Job Oth, 16th: “1 would not live always,” after which her body was deposited in the grave, beside her sister, who died a few years since of the same disease.— Thus has passed away one of earth’s sweetest flowers, though withered here, yet, we doubt not, will forever bloom in the garden of God. com.
