SUMMER, AHOY! What Eave You to say in Response to This? IStoi-ktou Mail, Auju.-t -Jitli | To the Editor of the .l/a.7 — Sir : I un derstand that in his speech last evening on Hunter-street Square, Charles A. Sumner, candidate for Congressman at-Lirge, made the asseitbu that the employes of the Cen tral l'acilic Kail road Company vote only at the bidding of that corporation. As I was attending at Billy Emerson's minstrels [*, better performance than the agile Hopper was giving free gratis under the folds of the Hag that I fought for and that a large majority of Mr. Sumnei's adherents fought against), 1 have but the word of bystand ers, who may have misunderstood the speak er ; but I take this opportunity to say that, if he did make Bucli an assertion, he is a liar in his threat ! It is do new lie, but one that has gone uncontradicted lone enough ; and on behalf of my own man hood and that of my fellow-workers in a field of industry that is certainly as honor able as is any that the professional oliicc seeker has ever occupied, I brand the as- Bertion as a lie, and defy the liar ! I will venture to say that the railroad profession (if such it may be termed) embodies in its personnel as much independence, manhood and honesty as any other profession, and I hear assert that the intelligence of railroad men everywhere is on ;i par with that of the workers iv any other business, and free speech does not permit any man to stand up in a public place and, with a barbaric j aivp that wakes the echoe of the foothills, insult a class of men who are in every sense his superiors. I have been an employe of the Central Pacific liailroad for eight yearp, araid va rious political complications, and do word has ever been said to me nor to any man a co-worker with me as to how or foiwhom he or I should vote. Melon stealers near Mendociao city have gone so far as to haul away wagon loads, and in several instances have destroyed large numbers of melons. The ranchmen decided to put a stop to the vandalism, and placed gun- traps in the melon patches and orchards. A correspondent of the Austin (Nev. ) Ileveilk is of the opinion that the strange animal mentioned as infestiDg Yankee Blade of nights and killing and eating all the domestic cats at that suburban local ity must bo a carcajou. This animal is somewhat rare, but has been occasionally met with in the .Sierra Nevada mountains. One was killed three or four years ago near the head of Carson river. The earcajuu is a predatory, carniverous animal, looking like a diminutive cinnamon bear, only much daiker. Last Saturday, cays the Klko (Nev ) Independent, while handling cattle in the railroad corral at Wells, Andrew HarreH, a son of -Jus; ■ r Harrell, the well known stock man, mat with a singular and pain ful accident, which might have proved fatal. Young Harrell was in the corral, mounted, forcing the cattle, which were very wild, into the chute leading to the card, for loading. A big broad-horned steer, becoming frantic, attempted to jump over I larrell't horse, and in the endeavor impaled the rider on the point of one of his horns, bycatchiug him just under the chin and raising him clear of the saddle. Unfortunately the horse maintained his position, and as the infuriated steer de scended from his aerial tlight, young Har rell came down astride his horse's wethers, which released him from impalement. The sharp horn penetrated some distance in the Mesh, making a aevere but not dan gerous wound. W. H.
