The new profession that promises to be one demanded by the progress of the age, and one whose sjope renders it peculiarly satisfactory to men and women of a scholarly turn of mind, is that of electrical engineering. It is not, of course, entirely BnfaaOVß to the general public, and its re quirements are more or "!■ as familiar in the world of eciectUts ; but the few who have hitherto represented the profession have been rather it 3 founders, and the discover ere of the lav? of nature on which it is based, than students who have been at tracted to opportunities already provided. With these, tco, the work has been one of constant experiment and growth, and it is only at the Moat recent date that the series of experimental methods have crystallized into tuffich nt relative sr (pence to be properly termed one of the professions of the age. Among tbe eminent electricians are Sir William Thompson and Dr. Sie mens, both FeUowa of the Kojal Society of Great Kritain ; Mr. lvlison and I'ro fesEor Alexander (Jraham Bell, of oar own country, and a limited number of others representing France and Germany. The late electrical exhibition in Paris has re vealed the marvelous results already at tained by science, and its practical applica tions are already est&blithid in thebyaicm? of cables, electrical railways, telephones, and other recent invention?. AN ARTISTIC YOUNG LADY'S ROOM. People furnish their rooms now accord ing to their caprices. The personal ccmes out. The rich literary young lady lite up her room with furniture of an antique pat tern, with book cases in park wooa or oak, with a tiled lire-place, and brass andirons, a Venetian mirror, and deep luxuiious rugs. She has rare engravings, and a Sevres writing-table. "Simple but choice," one says on entering. If she ia a fashionable belle, her room will be fes tooned with pink or blue eilk, covered with lace, or tnfted s»tiu let into the walla. Long mirrors will abound, and the furniture will be ef ormolu. The spirit of Pompadour breathes from this in'eri'-r ; it is all roses and Llue ribbons. The artistic young laily has three important caprices : a bunch of peacock*' feathers, a brass pot full of cat-rails, and a medieval candle stick. These are the essentials. Japanese fa 113 as a matter of detail ; an easel,' a few straight- backed choirs, a brown enr tain embroidered with suaflowera, and a Persian cat. With all the etiffnese, and the preference for a certain dirty yellow, which has become the passion of the fol lowers of C;mabue Brown, these modern esthetes do soiiielimts mako very pretty rooms. They are quaint and individual, bat fiore is no doubt tho "high artistic craze" has produced some very ugly ef fects. The severe stiffness of the cattail has entered much into modern embroidery. Everyone feels for the stork which has stood so long on cno leg. " The lilLs link and wan, Each stork anj sunflower ppray," Are all stiff and dismal. They are th<! pendants to the " lean disciples of Burne- Jones." The Postlethwaitea and Bunthorues and their female adorers look like a stork on one leg. The hero of a modern esthetic comedy sayp, as the high est synonym of despair, " I feel like a room without a dado." It is one of the pleasantest caprices of modern luxury that women have their br-drooms aud boudoirs furtiithed in colors whicS will net olf thi ir favorite dresses, and add china to ma'.ch the bed-room. KaTKRTKKST8 QM THK Eye — That sensa tions of light iiiay be produced by mechani cal irritation of the nerve of the eye is now showed to be the cisc, by observations re ceutly made by Schmidt- Kinipier, on per sons from whom an eye had been removed not long before. The nega tive result in other cases ia explained by the more complete atrophy of the nerve, or greater retraction of the stump.
