ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING.
The new profession that promises to be
one demanded by the progress of the age,
and one whose sjope renders it peculiarly
satisfactory to men and women of a
scholarly turn of mind, is that of electrical
engineering. It is not, of course, entirely
BnfaaOVß to the general public, and its re
quirements are more or "!■ as familiar in the
world of eciectUts ; but the few who have
hitherto represented the profession have
been rather it 3 founders, and the discover
ere of the lav? of nature on which it is
based, than students who have been at
tracted to opportunities already provided.
With these, tco, the work has been one of
constant experiment and growth, and it is
only at the Moat recent date that the series
of experimental methods have crystallized
into tuffich nt relative sr (pence to be
properly termed one of the professions of
the age. Among tbe eminent electricians
are Sir William Thompson and Dr. Sie
mens, both FeUowa of the Kojal Society
of Great Kritain ; Mr. lvlison and I'ro
fesEor Alexander (Jraham Bell, of oar own
country, and a limited number of others
representing France and Germany. The
late electrical exhibition in Paris has re
vealed the marvelous results already at
tained by science, and its practical applica
tions are already est&blithid in thebyaicm?
of cables, electrical railways, telephones,
and other recent invention?.
