THE WAR AGAINST RAILROADS. After all the glamour and smoke of this political battle has ended and cleared away, after the calmer momenta of reason and judgment come, we think a great many people of California will be ashamed of themselves for the countless lies they have told about the Central and Southern Pacific Railroads. It has come to be a sort of usage in California politics for both par ties to abuse these corporations. And the reason for this is that there is a certain class which holds as the highest trait of statesmanship, not the ability to make con stitutional laws, bnt the ability to abuse the railroads. S,i loog aa this is the domi nant clement in politics, just so loag will it pay for a candidate to lie. f\ow we do not want it understood that we are an apologist for the bad actiass of the railroad corporations — God knowa euch coDceros, or any of a similar magnitude, are not the portrait of perfection ; nor, on the other hand, does any nominee of either party represent all that is good and true and noble of mankind. We believe nine tenths of those whose months are the loudest in using denunciatory language against fie great railroad corporations would be the easiest silenced by their gold. History haa proven this, and hiatory is one of those incontrovertible things that never goes back upon itself, evea if party nomi nees do upon the people. Why do not these men say what they me&n while asking the suffrage of voters ! Why perjure themaelves before their con stituents and before their God ? What is the necessity, let us inquire, for men to get up on the stump and make promises which they fassW cinnot be fulfilled, even if they had the power? If to be success ful in a political ißSue involves the surren der of a truthful reputation, then the par tisan way of competing for the control of government had better be chaDged. If it ia wrong for railroad corporations to do acts contrary to the good of the pub lic, it ia equally wrong for the public to do acts contrary to the good of the railroad corporations. Tney should work in har mony. But never until that wrongful spirit of waifare is crushed out can this be. We do not pretend to say that it ia not just that restrictive measures should be put upon the railroads ;]that is a necessity. Bat we do say emphatically th»t no remedy can be reached so locg aa the principal issue of a political campaign is inveeted in an antagonistic race for the supremacy be tween the contending parties in hating the raitroaoe. If all that is necessary to acquire office rests in fulsome promises to perform miracles, then the country has indeed de generated into a land of demagogy. — [San Diego Srxn, O:tob?r 21at. It. A. Rice, a farmer residing on the Walla Walla river, sowed some rye three years a;o ou a patch of soil covered with stubble. After eowina he harrowed in the seed, and without further cultivation what ever he has harvested three crops, the two first yielding fifteen bushels to the acre, and the last being a still hoavier yield The crops volunteered and sowed them from the scattered graia. H? received two and a half cents per pound fur his seed. Thiß year Mr. Hice ha 3 turned the soil to prevent further volunteering, and will plant eighty acre* with the sjme seed, finding that rye is of more pr^t to him than wheat. While we consider volun teering poor firming, we believe farmers would do well to experiment wi:h rye, if for no other purpose that a rotation of crops.— [Wall» Walla Union. ■ »--• — Flounders are very plentiful in the vi cinity of Vallejo at present, the fishermen catching between two and three hundred while making a drift.
