C. Walker. San Francisco Money Market. San Francisco, May 20th. — Local money lenders report plenty of funds on hand as a rule, but some of them complain of a scarcity of borrowers and limited wants among those who* are seeking. The rate for commercial loans is still 7 per cent., but this rate is not obtained as easily as some weeks ago, and probably for the reason that the demands of borrowers are less urgent. Sonic money has lately been raised through bonds issued by local incorporations at '! per cent, for ten to twenty years, the bonds readily commanding a small premium. This has transferred some loans from banks to the general public, flic change is prob ably a good one, provide I the lending con stituency has been enlarged by the opera tion, on the ground of the greater interest developed in the success of local enter; prises '">■ the greater number who have moneyed relations to the same. There is a good line of mortgages offering. Those on city real estate, where the margins are sufficiently large, are readily taken at 7 per cent., and some are placed as low as (> per cent. Merced, May 20th. -— The grasshoppers, I have been devastating the gardens and small farms in the foothills to the eastward of this place for some time past, are now sweeping down upon the Merced plains in such masses as to destroy all vegetation ly ing in their path. A farmer named Elem, living' on the Chowchilla river, in the southeastern corner of this county, reports that they have attacked his farm, destroy | ing a field of barley and another of wheat, together with an orchard and garden. After eating up the crops ol all his neigh ! bors :;'■■ \*e on the river, they are now spreading over the larger farms in the Ap pling settlement. At Cunningham's and ' Bennett's, a few miles to the northward, : j they are in still larger numbers, and are ; rapidly getting away with the winter-sown ! wheat and barley, vinos and orchard trees, and on Bear creek and Own and Miles creek they arc so thick that their dead ! bodies in the water create a stench that i draws the buzzards ..and drive away the people. North of Bear creek the grasshop pers have passed down the ridge as far as Atwater's farm, and are destroying his vineyard, orchard and garden, and also the grain fields. The farmers complain of still another pest, the Hes.-:an fly, which ap pears to be doing much harm on two or three farms to the northward of this place. Many f.ar that the prospective harvest will be made a failure by these pests. Committed to the Insane Asylum. I'KTAi.rMA. May 20th.- Mrs W. R.
