It is proposed in this collection to rive a prominent place to the affairs of the American Union, to the Inborn of its politicians, and to the Literary and Scientific publication* of it* Authors. The Revue des Deux Monde* Row makes a public appeal to American Authors and Editors, by sending to it, through Mr, Putnam, of New York, a copy of each Of their publications. Tke Revue is in a better position than any other organ in Europe to serve as an intellectual link between the Old and the New World, which has as Editors and Contributors the most eminent political, scientific, and literary men of France. Many of its contributors have visited North and South America, and it still counts among them many of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps. Each number of the Revue, in addition to its articles signed by the first names of France, contains, under the title of" Chronique de la Quinsaine," a historical summary of the principal events of the political world, which will certainly be, for the American, the moot faithful picture of the European movement*. THIS is pronounced, by the press of America and England, 'the beat magazine in America.' It has nearly reached its thirty-fourth volume, and in its list of upward, of a hundred contributor! are found the names of every distinguished writer, male and female, in America, with several equally prominent of Great Britain, Turkey, Sweden, etc. A new volume, containing a superb engraving, a portrait qf the editor engraved by Chbnby, from a painting by Elliott, will commence on the first day of July, 1M9. The following notices of the Kniokbbsockeb are from the American and English press, and from American and British writers of distinction. 'Tbb Kmickbhbockbb.?The last number ot this venerable and widely-popular periodical appears upon entirely new and beautiful type, in all its departments; and in its rich and diversified contents, continues to vindicate its reputation as the most agreeable and entertaining Magazine published in I the United States. When we first started the old I 'New Yorker,' our friend Clash had preceded us I as Bditor of the Kmcxaaaooua about a twelvemonth: it has now reached an agegreatly beyond that of anv American Monthly; a fact which literally 'speaks volumes' in praise of the manner in which the work has been conducted. No number of the K. has ever been issued under Clabk's supervision that did not bear indubitable evidence of editorial care, and anxious thought, and well-directed labor rmstamped upon its pages. We have known no monthly, of this country or Europe, so thoroughly edited, in the strictest sense of tne term.'?Neva York Daily Tribune. 'Mathematicians tell us of certain curves called a*ymptot*?, whose peculiarity is always to approach each other, and yet, even when infinitely extended, never to intersect. The Knickehbockeb, which has reached an age for a Magazine much greater than a hundred years for a man, and only to be attained by a more marvellous miracle, has perpetually approached the highest possible point ol interest ana excellence; and yet it seeuis to have an excel*ior, for each number seems better than that which Went before. How it is done our friend Clabe may understand?but it is a sealed mystery to us. There is no publication in the United States that hassoattractive or popular a feature as the Editor'* table of the KNICKESBOcxaa.'?New York Courier and Enquirer. 'We regard it as the very best work of its kind in the Union.'?St. Atban'* (ra.) Journal. 'Its contents are as invariably good as its appearance is punctual.'?William Cullen Bbyant, m the Now York Evening Poot. Its articles are worthy of Blackwood's palmiest days. The Editor'* 'libit is in Mr. Clabk's happiest vein; varied and racy in a remarkable degree.' +?Nkvo York Commercial Advertiser. 'The Knickerbocker seems to increase in attraction as it advances in age. it exhibits s .monthly variety of contributions unsurpassed in number or ability.'?National Intelligencer. 'The Knickerbocker is oqe of the most valuable mamxines of the dav. and outstriDS all comoetitiou in the higher walks of lierature.'?Albany Argue. "The Editor's Table alone is worth the price of 1 the work. It is not a periodical to be lightly glanced over and thrown by, but it forms a library book to save and re-read. A act of the Knickeebocker, bound up in volumes, on the shelves of one of our popular libraries, is more consulted {so the librarian has often told us) than any other similar work.'? Bottom Daily Tranacnpt. President Everett, qf Harford College, late Minuter to England.?'1 peruse the Kncsuiocui with high gratification. It seems to me to be of an order of merit auite above the average of the periodicals of this class, English or American.' Hon. J. K. Paulding, late Secretary qf the Navy.? 'The manner in which the Knickerbocker is con- I ducted, and the great merit of its contributors, place it in the highest rank of periodicals.' Paor. Longvellow, Cambridge Univereity.?'The j Knickerbocker stands high in this quarter. It is superior to most of the English magazines, and well deserves its large list of subscribers." Bon. Rossst M. Charlton, Georgia.?'The Knickerbocker is a work which requires no puffing; and 1 shall always feel that I aw conferring a favor on those to whom I recommend it.' Tux London Examines.?'This very clever Magazine is the pleasanteet periodical in the United Stales. Its articles, which are numerous and short, various and interesting, are well worthy of imitation by our Magazines on this side of the Atlantic.' London Morning Chronicle.? Judging from the numbers before us, we are inclined to consider ! this the best of all the Aiiiersan literary periodicals. I Its contents are highly interesting, instructive, and 1 I amusing.' J The London Litekaby Gazette.?'The taste < i and talent which the knickeeboceee displays are < | highly creditable to American writers, ana very 1 I agreeable for English readers.' ' London Metropolitan Monthly Magazine.? I We have read several number* of this talented pe- I nodical, and rejoiced in tiiem. They would do ' credit to any country or to any state of civilisation 1 to which humanity has yet arrived.' I London Athinsim.?'Fruin a very clever < Monthly Magazine, 'The Knicksrrockbe.' of New I Vork, we copy the following spirited story,' etc. Sis Edward Bulwbr Lvtton.?'The K.mcrri- i rocker is the best American periodical I have yet ' Seen. I take pleasure in enclosing you an article ' Which was penned expressly for your work.' Cmarlbs Dickens, esq.?'I read the Knicker- < ocwkb with very gTCRt pleasure: it ia indeed a | I most various and entertaining1 periodical. It affords ' ; me pleasure to contribute to the pages of a work ' which numbers among its regular correspondents ( such writers as Mr. lavrws.' t Rev. Dr. Dice Scotland.?'I have read a good many of the articles in the frw numbers of the ' Knkkebsocebb which you sent me, and find them 1 to power great merit. Some of its papers, it is | true, were too light for my serious turn of mind; j yet the whole appears well calculatad to gratify the tastes of the mass of readers. * 1 Capt. F.
