TR1BUTED BY LOT among the members, each > member having one share for every live dollars paid by him. Each member is thus certain of receiving in return the value of the five dollars paid, and may also receive a painting or other work of art of great value. Third.?The Institution keeps an office and FREE PICT U RE G A LLER Y, al ways open, wcl 1 attended, and hung with fine paintings, at 497 Broadway, where the members in New York receive their engravings, paintings, tec., and where the business of the Institution is transacted. Fourth.?The Bulletin of the Art-Union, which has now been eulargeil to include, in addition to the usual Catalogue of Pictures aud List of Subscribers, particular descriptions ol works purctiased lor distribution, news of interest in relation to the Fine Arts, extracts from the correspondence of the Institution, Wood-cut Illustrations of Paintings belonging' to the Gallery, and generally such matters of interest connected with the Art-Union as may be desirable to subscribers, will be furnished gratuitously to Honorary Secretaries, and to those members who, after paying their subscriptions, shall signify their desire to have it forwarded to them by mail. Diatribution of the Engravings, and the Annual ; Report of the year 1848.?The Engraving of " Queen Mary signing the Death Warrant of iMdy Jane Grey," upon steel, und measuring *23 inches by 15j inches, was finished early in the year, and lias been in the bauds of the printer ever since its completion. PriiiU are being taken froui it at the rate of fifty per day, and the distribution of them will coinineuce about the first day of May next. An efTort will be made to deliver them as nearly as possible in the order of the receipt of subscriptions. The "Transactions" will he published and distributed at the same time with the engravings. The AWrovtng for the year 1849.?The plate of " Youth," being tne second picture of Mr. Cole's celebrated series of the " Voyage qf /Afe," is in progress under the skilful burin of Mr. James Snulie, who will undoubtedly make it the best large landscape engraving ever executed in this country. A small etching of this picture will accompany the volume of "Transactions" about to be published. The Medal for the year 1849.?The subject of this | medal is the head of Colonel Trumbull, in continu. ation of the series of distinguished American artists, . commenced by the representations of Allston and | Stuart. Bronze Statuettes.?A committee was appointed some time since by the General Board to inquire ' into the expediency of prucuringstutuettra in bronze for distribution at the next annual meeting. Tin London Art-Union for several years has expended , most judiciously a portion of its funds in eucour. aging this branch of Art. There has always been J a difficulty in this country in obtaining proper workmen, which is the principal reason why re1 duced copies in bronze have nut already been made of several exquisite statues, modelled by our own artuts, <uiu wmcn seemed pn uliarly adapted to lIixh mix It of treatment. Itiu olwtoclr ban now been rrnioved, and there are here at present several persons lately arrived from Europe, who are fully competent to undertake thin kind of work. Indeed, the email bunt of an Indian, beautifully modelled by Btows, has been reproduced in bronze by one of these artist* in a very aatiafai lory manner. A resolution haa accordingly been passed, in accordance with the recommendation of the special comiiulice of inquiry, that Mr. Bbown la- commissioned to model a atatuettc in bronze, twenty inches in height, illustrative of Indian form and charm t? r, ami that tw enty copies in bronze be cast for distribution among- die member* of the year 11449. Etching* in (hilUnt for 0* year IS49.? A set of i Outline*, similar to the illustration* of Rip Van Winkle, will undoubtedly be published for the nteinbcrs of the present year. The *pe< ial committee upon Engravings have tlie subject under consideration, but liavr as yet made no report upon it to the General Hoard. Due nutsc shall be given as soon as tfiat body pass a decisive resolution in relation to it. No such guarantied interest of Eighteen per cent. can be. obtained under the charter of any other Life Insurance Company of the country ; nor can any Hank, Kailroad, State or Government Stock of the Union afford mo sure a guarantee both for permanent safety of the principal, or such surely accumulating profits and interest, making the Reserved Guarantee Capital of this new company in every respect the Batest and most surely profitable investment in the United States. Gentlemen in Vermont disposed to secure a limited amount of this stock during the preeent week, at par, (before it is ull taken iu Massachusetts and New York,) can once more have an opportunity to secure un investment second to no other in the State or Union, on application to the Hank of Moutpelier, or the Vermont Hank, in Moutpelier, before the 26th instant, or by application per mail to PAUL DILLINGHAM, Waterbury, BEN J. HALCH, Moutpelier, JULIUS Y. DEWEY, Moutpelier, JOHN A. PAGE, Montpelier, OR A MEL H. SMITH, Montpelier, Committee of Trustees for distributing the Stock. Ten per cent, to be paid in cash on subscription, the balance of ninety per cent, within ten days, at either of the bunks of Vermont, or Moutpelier. An additional class of insured members will be adopted by the Trustees, to be conducted upon the joint-stock principle under which all of the previiuuis of this new class will revert to the holders of the Reserved Guarantee Stock, whereby the intrinsic value and price of the stock will not only be permanently sustained at ten per cent, above par, but within nve years it cannot be purchased for less than twenty to thirty per cent, advance. A peculiar feature in the safety of this stock over every other is, that before the holders of the Re scrvcu uuaruntee r unu can ever ue muue uauie for contribution or loss in any way, not only all the cash premiums of five classes of members, but all the deposite premium and interest notes to three and six times the cash payments, which can never amount to less than from three to four hundred thousand dollars annually, must first be consumed or exhausted by prior losses?on event impossible to occur within the scope of any human event wliatever. The OKFiNiTiuNs are clear and exact, and those pertaining to technical and scientific terms are specially valuable to the general reader. The autlior has evidently bestowed great labor on pbonunciation. His system of Notation, which is easily understood, and founded on a more complete analysis of the vowel sounds than we have elsewhere met with, together with his plan of exhibiting all the best English authorities in relation to words differ eutly pronounced by different orthoepista, gives to thin work important advantages us a Pronouncing Dictionary. In obthogxaphy lie has made no arbitrary changes, but where image in various and fluctuating, no baa aimed to be consistent, and to reduce to lite sauie rules words of similar Ibrination. The insertion of Grammatical forms and inflections of words to a much greater extent than they are given in other English Dictionaries, and the short critical uutee on the ortliograpby, the pronunciation. the grammatical form ami construction, and the peculiar, technical, local, and American usee of words interspersed through the volume, give to this work much additional value. The copious Vocabulary of Modern Geographical names, with their pronunciation, and a greatly enlarged and improved editiou uf Walker's Key to Uie pronunciation of Classical and Scripture proper names, are important appendages to the Dictionary. Eighteen month* have passed since this Dictionary wus published; and its already extensive use, both among cultivated English readers, and men of wide learning, affords good testimony of its merits. We confidently recommend it as containing an ample and carefVil view of the present state of our language. J ARED SPARKS, LL. D.
