THE KNICKERBIMKKK MAGAZINE. Edited by I<rwla Uuylord Clark. ^TMflS in pronounced, by the press of America and 1 England, 'tin- beat magazine in America.' It lias nearly reached its thirty-fourth volume, and in it* lint of tifncurd of a hundrea contributors are found the names of every distinguished writer, male and female, in America, with several equally prominent , of Great Britain, Turkey, Bweden, etc. A new volume, containing a superb engraving, a portrait (fthe editor'engraved by Chenky, from a painting by Elliott, will commence on the first day of July, 1H-49. The following notices of the Knickerbocker are from the American and English press, aipl from American and British writers of distinction. 'Tut: Knickerbocker.?The last number of this venerable and widely-popular periodical uppears upon entirely new and beautiful type, in all its departments; and in its rfch and diversified contents, continues to vindicate its reputation as the most agreeable and entertaining Magazine published in the United States. When we first started the old New Yorker,' our friend Clark had preceded us as Editor of the Knickerbocker about a twelvemonth: it has now reached an age greatly beyond that of any American Monthly; a fact which literally 'speaks volumes' in praise of the manner in #i... uvurlr hgu lu.,.?i i-onilocted. No number of the K. him ever been issued under Clark's supervision that did not bear indubitable evidence of editorial care, and anxious thought, and well-directed labor eustampcd upon its pages. We have known no monthly, of this country or Europe, so thoroughly edited, in the strictest sense of trie term.'?Arte York Daily 'lYibunt. 'Mathematicians tell us of certain eurves railed asymptotes, whose peculiarity is always to approach each other, and yet, even when infinitely extended, never to intersect. The Knickerbocker, which has' reached an age for a Magazine much greater than a hundred years for a man, and only to be attained by a more marvellous miracle, has perpetually approached the highest possible point of interest and excellence; and yet it seems to have an excelsior, for each number seems better than that which went liefore. How it is done our friend Clark may understand?but it is a sealed mystery to us. There is no publication in the United States that has so attractive or popular a feature as the Editor's table of the Knickerbocker.'?New York Courier and Enquirer. We regard it as the very best work of its kind in the Union.'?St. Alban's (Ka.) Journal. 'Its contents are as invariably good as its appearunce is punctual.*?William Cullen Bryant, in Ou New York Evening Post. 'Its articles are worthy of Blackwood's palmiest days. The Editor's Table is in Mr. Clark's happiest vein; varied and racy in a remarkable degree.' ?New York Commercial Advertiser. 'The Knickerbocker seems to increase in at traction as it advances in age. It exhibits a monthly variety of contributions unsurpassed in number or ability.'?National Intelligencer. 'The Knickerbocker is one of the most valuable magr-zines of the day, und outstrips all competition in the higher walks of lierature.'?Albany Argus. "The Editor's Table alone is worth the price of the work. It is not a periodical to be lightly glanced 1 over and thrown by, but it forms a library book to save and re-read. A set of the Knickerbocker, bound up in volumes, on the shelves of one of our Cipular libraries, is more consulted (ao the librarian is often told us) than any other similar work.'? Boston Daily Trunscript. President Everett, Harford College, late Minister to England.?'1 peruse the Knickerbocker with high gratification. It seems to me to be of an : order of merit auite above the average of the peri- j odicals of this class, English or Americau.' Hon. J. K. Paulding, late Secretary qf the Navy.? ! 'The manner in which the Knickerboc ker is conducted, and the great merit of its contributors, place \ it in the highest rank of periodicals.' Paov. Longfellow, Cambridge University.?'The I Knickerbocker stands high in this quarter. It is superior to most of the English magazines, and well deserves its large list of subscribers." Hon. Robert M. Charlton, Georgia.?'The Knickerbocker is a work which requires no puff- I itig-; and I shall always feel that 1 am conferring a favor on those to whom 1 recommend it.' The London Examiner.?'This very clever Ma gaxim- is the plcasantest periodical in the United States. Its articles, which are numerous and alien, various and interesting, are well worthy of imitation by our .Magazines on this aide of the Atlantic.' London Morning Chronicle.?'Judging from tlie numbers Is-lore us, we are inclined to consider this the liest of all the American literary periodicals, lu contents are highly interesting, instructive, and amusing.' The London Literabv Gaeette.?'The taste and talent which the Knickerbocker displays are highly creditable to American writers, ami very agreeable for English readers.' I/ON DON METRorOLITAN MONTHLY MAGAZINE.? 'We have read several numbers of this talented periodical, aud rejoiced in them. They would do credit to any country or Ui any state of civilization to which humanity has yet arrived.* 1/ondon Athenjkcm. ? 'From a very clever Monthly Magazine. It affords mc pleasure to contribute to the pages of a work which numhrrs among its regular correspondents such writer* as Mr. Ibvinu.' Rev.
