OWING to the late revolutions and counter revolutions among the nations of Europe, which have followed each other in such quick succession, and of which "the end i* not yet," the leading- periodicals of Great Britain have become invested with a degree of interest hitherto unknown. They occupy a middle gt<. and between the hasty, disjointed, and necessarily imperfect records of the newspapers, and the elaborate and ponderous treatises to be furnished by the historian at a future day. The American Publishers, therefore, deem it proper to call renewed attention to these Periodicals, and the very low prices at which they are offered to cub.,enters. The following U thfiir list, viz: THE LONDON QUARTERLY REVIEW, THE EDINBURGH REVIEW. THE NORTH BRITISH REVIEW, THE WESTMINSTER REVIEW, and BLACKWOOD'S EDINBURGH MAGAZINE. in unw periodicals areconlaincd the views, nuxlerately, though clearly and firmly expressed, of the three great parties in England?Tory, Whig, and Radical. " Blackwood" and the " London (Quarterly" are Tory; the "Edinburgh Review," Whig; ttinf the " Westminster Review," Liberal. The " North British Review" owes its establishment to the last great ecclesiastical movement in Scotland, and is not ultra in its views on any one of the grand departments of human knowledge ; it was originally edited by I)r. Chalmers, and now, since his death, is conducted by his son-in-law, Dr. Hanna, associated with Sir David Brewster. Its literary character is of the very highest order. The "West minster," though reprinted under that title only, is published in England under the title of the "Foreign Quarterly and Westminster," it being, in fact, a union of the two Reviews formerly published and reprinted under separate titles. It has. therefore, the advantage by tliis combination of uniting in one work tbe best features of both as heretofore issued. The above periodicals are reprinted in New York, immediately on their arrival by the British steamers, in a beautiful elcar type, on fine white paper, and arc faithful copies of the originals, Blackwood's Magazine lieing an exact fuc-innitc of the Edinburgh edition. LlTTELLf LIVING AGE. Published every Saturday, at 1-J] cents a \umber, Vearly, in ud ranee, $t>. BY E. LITTELL AMD CO., EOITON. rT',HIS work is conducted in the spirit of Litlcll'a I Muacuxn of Fomrn Literature, (which wm favorably received by the public for twenty years,) but aa it ia twice aa large, and appcara ao often, we not only give apirit and freahneae to it by many things which were excluded by a inonth'a delay, but while thua extending our acope, and gathering a greater and more attractive variety, are able ao to increase the solid and eulMtantial part of our litI erary, historical, and political harvest, as fully to satisfy the wants of the American reader. The elaborate and stately Knotty# of the Edinburgh, (Quarterly, and other Reviews; and Blackwood's noble criticismsoa Poetry, his keen polllieal Commentaries, highly wrought Tales, and vivid i descriptions of rural and mountain scenery; and the contributions to Literature, History, and common life, by the sagai iuus Spectator, the sparkling Examiner, the judicious Alhcnnuni, the busy and illustrious literary G axe lie, the sensible and com nrehelisite Britannia, the sober and respectable Christian Observer; llu-ac are intermixed with the Military and Natal reminiscences of the United Service, and with the beat articles of the Dublin University, New Monthly, Eraser's, Tail's, Ainaworth's, llood's, and Sporting Magazines, ami of Chambers's admirable Journal. We do not consider it beneath our dignity to burrow wit and wisdom from I'uiu h; ami, w hen wc think it good enough, make use of the thunder of The Tunes. We shall increase our variety hy importations from the continent of Europe, and from the new growth i of tlie British colonies. The steamship has brought Europe, Asia, and Africa into our neighhorhitod, and will greatly multiply our connexions as merchants, travellers, and oolitic lans, with all parts of the world; so that, much more itian ever, it now becomes every intelligent American to lie informed of Uie conditions ami < lutngea of foreign countries. And this not only Ix i mine of their nearer connexion with ourselves, but Iwcauec the nations see in to be hastening through a rapid process of c li.tnge, to some new state of things, whu li the merely political propliet cannot compute or foresee. Grogrsplii' si Di*ovcrles, the progress of Colonization, (which ia rilrnding over the whole world,) and Vpjvm ami Travels, will l>e favorite matter lor out selections; and in Krnrral, we shall system- I athally anil very fully acquaint our reaiii rs with lie great depart ment ol' foreign affairs, without en- I tirelv nr^ln ling our own. l\ hile we aspire tomake the f.iping Agedesirable to all who wish to keep themselves informed of the rapid progress of the movement?to statesmen, divines, lawyers, and physicians? to men of business and men of leisure,? it is still a stronger object to | make it attractive to their wives and < nildren. We talieve that we ran thus do soine piml in our day and generation, and hope to make the work indispensable in every well informed family. We say indispensable, heenuse in this day of cheap literature it ia not possible to guard against the intiua of what is bad in taste and vicious in morals, in any oilier way than by furnishing a sufficient supply of a healthy character. The mental and moral appetite must be gratified. We hope, that by "winnowing the wheat from the chaff," by ( roviding abundantly for the imagination, and by a Urge collection of Biography, Voyages and Travels, History, and more aolid mailer, we tnay produce a work w hich sliali be popular, while at the same time it win aspire to raiee tho stsndard of public taste.
