The railway shail *t« transport us from point to point on the route, i» and a very lurlit wagon or carriage invariably ac drawn bv a " span " (as they are called here/ or tb pair of light, uctivu horses, of great spirit and gf endurance, shall convey us hither and thither *t over the country in our inspection of the prairie farms. se Starting from the north-western point at Dun- hi leith, the lirst halt we make is at Mendota, about w. seveutv or ei<rhty miles from the northern boun- at darv ot the State. It is the point of junction with a railway running westward from Chicago d; to the Mis.-issippi, opposite Uurlingion in lowa. This passes through the military tract, and the al countrv has long been partiallv settled. It is a pi rich district of prairie, very favorable to cnltt- pi ration. I traveled nearly 1 i»0 miles through tliis m part of the count rv, and found the soil generally rich and deep, anil the white clover and sowii grasses very healthy and luxuriant, Some corn "~ lields are of uncommon magnitude; one vast sweep of j2,20n acres was all in ncw-.smvn wheat, a sparkling sheet of verdure in the morning sun. The towns, most of which are not four years - old, are growing rapidly. I met a carpenter 1 from Lanarkshire, who had been settled in the country for twelve years. Though he had made money he could not keep it, but lie blamed bim svlf for this as every steady man, he said, who had conic to this part of the country from Sent- a laud had thriven. Wages were at present low- J I er than he had ever known thein, a journeyman carpenter receiving only 4s. a day, with his board. He had seen many instances of men getting themselves into dilliculties by buving more laud than they had means to manage and pay for. Hut there is a plan of going "shares,'' jn which a prudent Scotch laborer "meets with great success. He has a farm given him to cul- 0 tivate, fenced, and broken up, and seeded; —he performs the rest of the labor and carries on the farm, and pays his rent bv delivering at the nearest station the half of the crop. This is an arrangement by which a steady man is sin e to succeed, and the owner of the Jaod is also 1 well paid. J The carpenter was at that time constructing a small farm house of timber by contract. -The foundation was of ma>on work, with large un derground cellar, the inside dimensions of the building being eighteen feet hy twenty-four, di vided iuto two rooms and a kitchen, with side posts twelve feet high, boarded, lathed, and plastered, aud roofed with shingle, complete for iMo. Last year the same bouse would have ' cost £Y,n; but both lumber and wages have fall en since the money panic about a third. 1 Following the route southward for some twenty miles, we come to the Illinois lliver at s LaSidle. This river discharges itself into the Mississippi after n course ofj'-im miles, during i which it drains nearly all the center of Illinois, J increasing its volume by the waters of many tributaries. It has been navigated by steam boats for many years, and furnishes a cheap water communication for the interchange of products anywhere along the line of the Missis sippi, from St. I'aul to Xew Orleans. My ob ject iu stopping here was to inspect the coal- - lauds, of which La Salle is the great center. * Taking wagon at Ottawa, we crossed the river and drove some ten miles across the prairie, through a good country—all occupied—till we icached the bed of another stream, called the 1 Big Vermillion, where the coal makes its ap pearance on the surface. Here, froui the strata on the river sdde, we entered a shaft which penetrates a seam of coal nine feet thick, so sit uated that it drains itself. Near thus some thin ! seams of caiuiel coal have been found. All this part of the country is underlaid with coal, which may be mined with the greatest ease. The sur face i* fine, rolling, fertile prairie; and there is abundance of limestone everywhere. The La Salle coal held, as at present worked, produces about 1,0"" tons of coal a week, aud is capable of auy required extension. Keturninj-1«. Oif«« ;.j, I risliod a manufactory for making starch from, lndian corn. 11 is situ ated advantageously iiiia good country for pur chasing the corn, aiul every advantage of abundant canal and railway communication. Three kinds of products are manufactured, one of fine starch, one of ordi nary starch, and one for making puddings. Two pounds weight of turn yield one of starch. The corn costs a farthing, aiid the starch sells at the factory for od. a pouud, so that this business should leave a good profit. There is a similar work at o>wego, in the State of New York, which has proved very profitable to its owners. The article made there has found its war to England, is now extensively used under'the name of "Coru rood," and is by many con sidered morepalatableand nutritious than either arrow-root or sago. This use of Indian corn is ■ another of the many excellent purposes sub served by that most productive of all grain, Crossing the Illinois Kiver at La Salle bv a viaduct U.ooo feet iu length, and so feet above the bed of the stream, we had a fine view of the limestone bluffs which here rise to a height of 2"n feet. After a run southward of some sixty miles, 1 stopped at Hloomington, which is with in the district of what is u»uallv reckoned the richest territory in the State. At this flourish ing and pretty town i had the good fortune to obtain the guidance of a gentleman of much in telligence and local experience, who unites in his own person the various functions of banker, jawyer, judge and colonel. V'c spent the dav in riding over the country, aud iu looking at the farms and talking with the settlers. They are men chiefly from the State of New York, and are all complainiug of the last wheat harvest as a nearly total failure. The pioneer of the set tlement thus told me his story. He came here fourvcarsago, and was so much pleased with the land and situation, that he advised his neigh bors in the State of New York to follow his ex ample. He purchased [acres of as fine prairie as can be desired. The first two years everything was successful. He grew more*than thirty bushels of wheat an acre on the newlv broken land, and sold it for 3s. a bushel, lie was thus tempted to lay out the money as fast as he made it, inclosing and hreakiug more. The Autumn before last he sowed NMacros with wheat; of it was killed by frost, the snow that winter being so light as not to eover it. He plowed this up and sowed again with Spring wheat, which succeeded admirably. Last Au tumn lie laid down tioii acres with wheat, but was somen hat late and out of season in getting it sown. The Spring proved wet, the wheat was late in maturing, extreme hot weather set in, and his wheat, which till then looked well, was iu one week rendered nearly worthless. The long continued rains in Spring had given them no season for oats, and Indian corn had for the sumo cause been plant -1 ed out of season, with the land in an unfavorable state, and the breadth very limited. This crop, ; which should be in the ground early in Mav, could not this year be planted till towards the , end of June. Fortunately they had not hud early hosts, so that there woulif be a fair vicld. There had been uo such unfavorable season for » seventeen years in Illinois, and he knew that the farmers who had recently settled in the country and who had had only last year's experience, were much disheartened. Vint personally he fell no apprehension, as he had the utmost cou- J fidence in the natural fertility of the soil, which he did not believe could be exhausted. lie hud seen similar land in this State from which twen ty-four crops of Indian corn hod been taken in succession, without manure, aud the last was a j splendid crop. The uext settler was a younger man, a gradu ate of ale College, who had purchased a scc- L tiou of land acres) three years ago at nearlv " £o uu acre. He had built a house, inclosed hfs land, and broken up the halfofit; butthewheat crop of last year, to which he trusted for future funds, hud proved an entire failure. He spoke despondingly of his future prospects, as he had like many others, been tempted by the facilities • afforded *bv the credit system oT purchase iu these Western States, to tittv a much greater ex tent of land than his available means were ade- quate for. lie said that they all counted ontheir J wheat crop to ** bring them outbut that hav ing failed them, the whole country was straiten ed. He wished to sell out at 4,4 Ki. an acre, that lie might have the means of paying ofl* his debts, and repurchasing a smaller farm in the same locality, where his obligations and risks would be less, r. All the other settlers I met iu this quarter had i»- the same tale of a wretched wheat crop. One had had U'O acres of wheat, which be examined :j- i with several experienced farmers a few weeks « before harvest, and they agreed iu estimating £ the probable yield at eighteen to twenty bushels I an acre. AVhen it was ripe he began to harvest | n * it, but after cutting seventy acres he discovered that there was uothing but shrivelled husk in | the ear, so entirely worthless that he not only desisted from cutting tho rest, but set fire to all J _ that was already cut, as well as that which re- i mained. While the more faint-hearted were discouraged lE by the untoward season t there were many'in n stances of an opposite kind. A very frequent cause of failure 1 found to arise from the inca ~ pictiy of the settler to avail himself fully of his J; position. Tho credit system tempts him to buy a large extent of land, every unsued acre of « which becomes at once a dead" weight upon him. If a man buys »><h» acres and has uot the means of cultivating more than GO, the 540 acres are ft to dead loss to hiui. lie has to pay either the price or the interest of the price, of this large unpro ■— ductivc, and, to him, useless extent of land. The produce of the tSO acres is called upon to per | bear, not only its own burden, but that of the nine-tenths which are idle. The lean kinc thus cat up the one fat one. in prosperous seasons so great a pull even as this can be withstood. ■■ { But the first strain breaks it down, rc An example of an opposite kind will show a njore correct system. A person last Spring bought 640 acres of land in this neighborhood. L He inclosed the whole of it, had it allplowed by contract, and sowed it with wheat; >otan acre 16° of his purchase was left idle. It'was al] sown in good order aud in good time, and the chances b were ihat the whole of it would succeed. As uib."!l-lDi-c«i& ereiypart of the work was done by contract' ] and would be po completed, 1 am enabled to ' shoTr the exact cost of the whole operation, and j " the probable return : j I A ring feaq? round the whole, of tubrfantlril boards and ■ * posts, Contnictpricertaldforbnaklngthcwhole, and putting | lnthewrd SCO I Paldforsecd wheat..... 160 | n COO < Total xuoo ' "| Price of the land, cash, Total £2,440 Jj Prolablecmp: Cr. - SO bush an acre—HSOO bash-, worth 7Sc- or 3s. .£1,920 ( Yalueoftbeiand after being enclosed and broken, * Profit the firrt year If the crop 5ucceed5.............. £1,030 These figures were given to me by a man of knowledge and experience; but the contract prices at present are lower than usual, and the n cost of fencing and breaking is thus below the average cost of these operations. Neither is there any charge for buildings, though that would not affect the balance, us the property would be by that amount the more valuable. And it must be remembered that the wheat crop *i sometimes fails, while the above satisfactory re* suit makes no allowance for failures. I here learned the history of one of the early and most successful settlers in Illinois. He and - his brother, then young men of twenty and "| twenty-one, came to this State thirty-four rears J ago, having left Ohio after an unsuccessful ven* J ture in cattle trading. They were in debt when * they began business in Illinois. They arrived / iu what was theu a wilderness, and pitched their J tent on the spot where one of them now resides. c They brought with them a pair of oxen, a mare, some few household utensils, a wagon, and two ? axes. They stopped near a *'grove," and built themselves a shanty or log hut. In addition to i the geueral stick, one of the brothers had a fur a hat which, after his arrival he traded for a breed- t ing sow. They worked away, gathered live stock, there being no limit to the liberty of graz- | ing, drove them great distances to market, and accumulated money. As the monev gathered thev bought up all the land they coufd get ut the J government sales, at 5s an acre, continued their c Htuck farming, and now send 100 fat cattle ; weekly to New York market, during the Fall seasou, after the cattle are fat. One of the brothers is believed to have now, in thisprudeut way, acquired land worth a quarter of a million , sterling. \ | The soil in all this district is a rich black san dy loam, lying in line gentle sweeps, admirably \ | adapted for currying on with ease and economy | all the operations ol'husbaudry, and, to use the I phrase of the country, is very '*handsome" | prairie.
