The Secret of Blondin's Saceet>> [From the X T. Century, Aug. J7.] The wonderfal power that Bioodto rnnrwrj of baUodng himself is tbe point of corioaity and arouemedt to the crowd. By explaining a little of tbe philoscpbj o! this feat we mar Jes seD the astouishmcDt of some people, ana per* hap# retnere tbe chief difficult/ to a rational amount of aelf-cultare, reioltiae in an improre ment of the nerrooa ijetcm. The common tor of a man spinning on the point of a wire, ex plain* tbe whole matter. The centre of gravity u lowered to the base, and there it ia easily preaerred. The oae of tbe pole answers the | same purpose. Blondin's pole is thirtj-foor feet lone, and weicha forty-six pounds. Held below the middle oT the bodj, it brings his ceo* tre of gravity sufficiently near to the rope, to be easifr controlled. A very slight elevation of one end and a corresponding depression of tbe other restores tbe balluice of tbe body. The skill to gorern the position, by an exaet morement of tbe Dole to the required extent and not an inch further, results from practice! Those who hare seen "the infant phenomenon" of tbe BaTel troupe on the tight-rape, must hare observed the imperfect management of the }>ole in less experienced bands. Fhilosophical y, Blondin and his pole constitute one body, and the extension laterally of its weight is equivalent to lowering the centre of gravity, or enlarging the base on which he walks. The most perilous exploit of IL Blondin is that of carrying a man on his back. Here be runs a frightful risk, becaose he cannot command the nervous system of another person. To this experiment be will tall a victim, if he persists in it. The slightest trepidation of nerve io the carried body will imperil hu centre of gravity, aod put it out of his command, ii\ spite of tie skill with which he adjusts the weight to rest as much as possible on his hips, and as little as possible on his sboulders. Travellers over mountains are warned by tbe guides to sit passively on the mule, without attempting to direct the animaL This ii what tbe man must do who rides on Blondin's back. His own command of nerve must be equal to that of bis master, or he endangers both. The fact of dis mountioff several times proves that it was so, and that be did not avail himself of any trick in shutting bis eyes to the abyss below. This id tbe wbols explanation of ii. Blondin's feat—his lowering of tbe center of gravity to near the base, and his aroaringlj skillful gor eramcnt of it. We would not advise auy one to try hazardous experiments; but tbe truth of this explanation may be tested by walking on the edge of a board firmly fixed in the required position on tbe ground or floor, and by usingor dispensing with the balancing pole, or other weight, to control tbe centre of gravity. Gymnastic Drill of the Preach Army-, The distribution of the prizes at tbe military gymnastic school at Joinville Ic J'ont has re vealed at the same time to the public the exist ence of such an establishment, and the end and aim for which it has been created. Tbe solem nity was witnessed by tbe Minister of War, and all tbe highest officers of the French army. The candidates for distinction are all officers or subalterns having already served, and tbe ob ject of competition is the diploma of " .Moni tor," or rattier tbe degree of " Bachelor of Agil ity," which is conferred upon the most dexterous in manly sports, with a view of securingthe ap pointment of gymnastic masters in one or other of the regiments of tbe French army. a The institution of Joinville confiocs itself en tirely to the instruction of gymnastics and other bodily exercises, whether imparting strength, skill or grace, according to the system here adopted. \\ e ere surprised that ever? soldier in the French service is not an Admirable Crichton. The perfection of the Zouaves uo longer astonishes, and we cannot wouder at tho clumsy inferiority of tbe British soldier, from whom such instruction as is imparted at Join ville is wholly withheld, and who consequently knows only bow to present himself before the enemy, and hangs back with awkward bashful ness when ushered suddenly into tbe companv of friends. Here we have grown up, bronxed, and beard ed men, warriors who have stormed tbe heights of Alma and rushed on MalakofT, competing to gether for an "accessit" in fencing, boxing, siugle-stick, and even danciug! Music, likewise, is not neglected, and if tbe French soldier so wills it he may become not only a Turenne. u Desaix, or a Pichegrue, but a Tamberlie, a I)u --prez, or a Sims Beeves, all at tbe same time, the spectacle at Joinville was a most astonish ing one, not by any means entitled to coutempt, so unlike wa< it to* tbe British idea of a military education. The men danced upon wires, ran along long ropes, rebounded like elastie balls from one rope to another, running up ladders of enormous height, then bounding to tbe earth with the agility of squirrels. But tbe crowning and most exciting portion of the whole was the mock attack of the redoubt at which the men placed outside the broad fosse arrive with the battle-axe and gun slung across the shoulder. The trumpet sounds the assanlt, and in two minutes lime tbe redoubt is entered, and a volley fired from the iuterior, in spite of the great height of the walls, and the resistance opposed from within. This new system of training should be examined, aa it may teach the secret of that self-eodurance which has ena bled tbe Zouaves to usurp the reputation of the whole French army. Agility, presence of mind, promptitude of hand and eye are more cultiva ted than strength or discipline.—Letter from Fd.-u. Bergen TnnncL [rrom the American Railway Review.] Bergen Tunnel, now being bored through Bergen Hill, about a mile ana a half from Jer sey City, for the use of the Sevr York and Erie Railway Company, is forty-three hundred feet long. Tbe extreme height of tbe opening U twenty-three feet, and the width of the grade of the roadway is twenty-eight feet. The cross section contains 560 6-10 superficial feet, tbe cu bic contents being 121! yards ner lineal foot, nearly. The root is an arch of three centres, rising thirteen feet aod six inches from the springing, at which point tbe width is twenty nine feet and six inches. Tbe grade of the tun nel is two-tenths of a foot per hundred, ascend ing from the east approach for about two-thirds of the whole length, when .t chances to sixteen hundredths of a foot per bundled, descending towards the west approach. The drainage & carried by a covered drain between tbe tracks, the bottom of whieh is two feet below the tail zie wholo length of the bore ia through trap rock. The rost is perfectly solid, and with the exception of one or two points, will require no support. The hill on the Jersey City or east side, is very abrupt, so that the open cut at the approach is not more than two hundred feet long; the depth at the commencement of the tunnel being about fifty feet. The hill on tbe west side is more gradual in its descent, and tbe tuunel is approached from that side br a deep earth cut about half a mile long. The solid rock is struck at about two hundred feet from tbe mouth of the tunnel; the depth of the cut at the entrance being fifty four feet. There are eight shafts, varying in depth from eighty to ninety feet, which, with the two mouths of the tunnel, give eighteen different points to work from. The hoisting is perform ed by steam power, and the rock is taken to the east side of the hill in cars, which are run down an inclined plane, to tbe low ground, from which Soint they are hauled by a locomotive to the ludson river, and there the rock is used for fil ling in what is called the Long Dock, where the New York and Erie Railway terminus will final! v be. The tunnel, it is expected, will be finished during the winter of 1&50—CO. Blondin Eclipsed. There was an exhibition upon DeL&ve's rope on Monday night last about 11 o'clock, which did Dot appear in the bills. One of the press boys employed in this office, James BncUey, aged 16 vears. proceeded quietly with a com panion, at the hour mentioned, to the west end of the rope at the saw mill, and boldly started for Falls Field, without balancing pole or any other aceompaniemept. He was about half an hour making the oeritous journey, which, it may well be imagined, was accomplished with no lit tle difficulty and danger, lie was sometimes astride of tbe rope, then beneath it, " travel ing" with his hands and feet, and in crossing the ffuys was obliged to hang by his bands alone. When tbe size of tbe rope, which he was unable to anan with hu hands, is taken into consideration, the extreme peril he encounter ed, becomes apparent. His palms are blistered and calloused, and it is hardly probable that be will sooa enter upon such a foolish undertaking again.—BodntUr Union. * MOBTAUTT AX OXG PUXTOS RT Sl* OKLtura. —Death baa been very busy among the printers of Kew Orleans.
