HXnselo and Morality* [Extract from * Discourse by Henry Ward Beecher.] In a recent discourse, prepared sped illy with reference to the wants of- tbo-members of the Brooklyn Youcg Men’s Christian Association, Mr. Beecher made some admiral suggestions re specting physical training, including the duty of being healthy, the influences which particu larly in great cities threaten to undermine gcod health, audof tbemeans which promote it. We make a few extracts: '*-J- ■. ' . * HE ALTO A MATTER OP VOLITION. la general, health is a matter of volition. To be sure, some inherit constitutions damaged from the beginning. A few that come to man hood, may, perhaps, be counted from the first the creatures of irreparable misfortune, ao far as physical health is concerned. A* few,*h!so, by some shock, or by some grievous experience, may bave become hopelessly weakened aod de ranged. But these cases are exceptional, and as compared with the whole mass ox men, they are few. They do not impair the force of the general statement that health is within the reach of every man. And Birch are tbeimpor tant relations of health to the whole economy of human life, and even to the formation 01 Christian character for the life to come, that every Christian ought to write down at the top of his book of good resolutions, “ By the help of God I am determined conscientiously to be a ‘ good Christian in a healthy body.” While you are seeking grace, do not forget to seek that which is to bo the vehicle, if cot the instrument, of grace—bodily health; fortbere is much devil io u morbid liber, and there is much grace in a sound ned healthy one. ; TOE CAUSE OF DISEASE—EATIKG IMPBOPZIILV. When riding on u locomotive, last week, and talking with the engineer, as I bad the privilege oi doing, 1 could txot but think bow much wi?er men were about iron and steel machines, than they were about fleshy and osseous machines. Tlie relation of the pump to thccapacity of the boiler; the relation of the furnace to the size of the flues; the relation of the cylinder, or of the steam generated, to the work to he dose— a'-l these things were in the engineer’s mind, lie was continuously watching everypart, ; atid opening and shutting vrlves on every side, so as to keep every part in its, proper, condition. The stoker, or fireman, was*applylng'*or with holding food, so as to keep the engine in just that state in which it would work best, accord ing to whether we were running on an up-grade, on a down-grade, or on level ground, and ac cording to the number and weight of the cars being drawn—for we were drawing a long and ponderous train. ■" Xow how many are there who watch their fur nace, to see that they gefin neither too much uortoo little fuel? Men shoved in food without any regard to what it is going to do! If it is the Sabbath day, when they are quiescent, when they havo less air end*exercise than on oiherdayp, and when their stomachs are not in a condition to digest as much food as on otber days, they eat a double portion. If it is a day when they are to undergo severe taxation ancl work, and when they can least afford to go wi:hout food, oftentimes they become anxious, aud neglect to cat because they are so anxious. As a general rule, when the body needs the basis of food, less than at any other time, they eat the most, and when it needs it more than at any other time, they eat the least. Our food is a means to an end. It is simply the fuel with which we are to raise steam for carrying op the purposes of life. A man should eat as much on principle os he prays. I bave been asked, sometimes, how I could perform so large an amount of work with appa rently so little diminution of strength. 1 at tribute my power of endurance to a long-form ed habit of observing, every day of my fife, the simple laws of health—and none more than the laws of rating. It has become a second nature tc me. It ceases any longer to be a matter of self-denial. It is almost like an instinct. If I have a severe tax on my brain in the morning I cannot eat heartily at breakfast. If. the whole day is to he one of nervous exertion, I eat very little till the exertion is over. I know that two forces cannot be concentrated in activity at the same time in one body. I know that when tne stomach works the brain mu it rest, and that when the brain works the stomach most rest. ll I am going to be moving about out of doors a good deal, then I can give a fuller s.ving to my appetite—which is sever exceedingly bad. IJut il 1 am engaged actively and successively inT mental labor, I cannot eat much. And I hare made eating with regularity, end with re ference to what I have to do, a habit so long, that it ceasee any longer to be a subject of 'thought. It almost takes care of itself. I at tribute much of my ability to endure work to good habits of eating, and constant attention to tbc laws of sleep, physical exercise and general cheerfulness. There is one thing more to be said in this con nection. It is not a matter of epicureanism that a man should be dainty concerning the food he eats. On the contrary, I hold that a civilized man ought to be civilized in his cook cry. I suppose one of the infallible signs of the millennium will be a belter regnlated kitch en—a kitchen that sends out food that will not make Christian men sick. HELPS TO HEALTH. We almost entirely disuse out-of-door exer cise. There are here and there men found wise enough to take a portion of every day for some form of excreUc—to live for hours in the open nirevery day. The very eun itself ia a doc tor. I think you might dispense with ha'f your doctors, if you would only consult Doctor Sun more, aud be more under the treatment of these great hydropathic doctors, the clouds! To be in the rain will do you good, if you only keep stirring. To be much in the open air every day, ruin or shine, summer or winter, I consid er one of the indispensable conditions of gen eral health. Now jou hare money enough to afford to keep a horse. Why, you are worth two hut. di ed thousand dollar»*, and you cannot keep a horse because yon are so anxious to be worth three hundred thousand! Being worth three hundred thousand, vou are so anxious to be worth four hundred, that you cannot spend half an ' hour a daf to ride with your family. Perhaps you do not like to be with roar family anyhow! Well, ride alone, rUU J Another Thing which is important to hea th isthc use of water* A familiar acquaintance with good water 1 think is an indispensable ele-; meat of virtue. Fresh water, and cnoagb of it, should be employed by every one who desires health. Utterly to bathe one’s sell daily I think materially stands connected with health, as health does with moral or spiritual training. Billiards afford women a*jd men a very gentle excitement and exercise; but a man is a gam bler if he goes into a billiard room! What kind of u reception would I meet with here on Sun day, if it was km wn that on Thursday I pre pared inyaclf for the duticsof Sunday bygoin** to a billiard room. ” Playing at ten pins is one of the most admi rable means of physical development, but where can a yono# man go to participate in this game without being in danger of being more contam inated in his morals than be is benefited in bis health ? Hut it ia well known that it is not without the gi euU'st danger that a young man can go to avail himself of the benefits ol this harmless recreation, where he enters the bowling saloon by the bar, and goes out by the bar. Whatever may be the effect upon him of rolling tenpins, the devil roils him down towards perdition. If ti professional man would learn fencing or wrestling, or boxing, merely for the sake of developing his muscles; in short, if be would engage in any physical exorcise that carries with it cxcitemcnt, enjoymeut, social pleasure, where is there a place that he can go and do it, wjtbiu the bounds of .these two great cities, without exposing himself to the most demoral izing influences? Ido not know of .one. We are pent up. Wc cannot take the exercise we need on our own ground. We are fortunate if we have room enough to build a house like Jacob's ladder, wilb its foot on the earth, and its top in the heavens, from which our house hold angels go up speedily I Men need some cheerful exercises, in which they can engage during those leisure half-hours, or quarter-hours, which occur in every man’s day. I think a place where a man can play at billiards, roll the ball, and engage in all sorts of pjmnasttc exercises, would be, if not a di rect prc&ching of the Gospel, yet an auxiliary to the preaching of the GospeC I therefore hail the annunciation that has been made to me—l trust correctly—that there is in contemplation a movement for the estab lishment in this city of just such a system of exercises as I have been describing, under the auspices of the Brooklyn Young-Men's Chris tian Association. ‘ I would give if not only countenance, but personal support. 1 com mend it to the sympathy of every. Christian man—of every man who is rearing up a family of children. STIMULANTS. These remarks apply with additional force to drinking. There are bat few that do not vio late their doty in this regard. Beverage is a grand cause of sickness. Domestic stimulants may or may not be tojanons. As to whether they are or are not, every man should Judge for himself—hut no man should fail to judge. Tea and coffee I do not suppose to be necessari ly harmful. Some kinds of tea I suppose are inevitably so, unless men arc built ot leather; but Ido not suppose all kinds are. Some-per sons 1 think ought to use neither tea nor cof tee; and some persons arc apparently not in jured, but benefited by tbe use of one, or the otbci, or both. Every mao should know whe ther they are injurious to him or not, andlcnow incthis. should follow his knowledge. * Tbe use of alcoholic drinks, to drive on the overtaxed machine of life, to arouse the dor n nut sensibility to r excitement and to dull en- ■ joyment—this is a matter which has come often and in many forms before you, bnt it has not come before you often enough, nor in forms enough Every year I live increases my sober conviction that the use of intoxicating drinks is a greater ‘destroying force to life and virtue than all other physical evils combined.' ’ 1 may in this counterion speak of one or two solid stimulants that are wonting wide raischie*. You may not be aware to what an appalling ex tent opium is being used in larger towns. I shudder at tbe thought of it, lam informed by druggists that none bnt themselves and physicians have any suspicion of the amount of this article that is consumed aa a stimulant or as a pleasure-bearing drag. It may yield a brief pleasure, but that pleasure is inevitably followed by long-continued and infer nal suffering. 'When a person bos once com menced tbe habit of opium-eating, bU life is as good as ended. Reformation msy take place Id tbe case of one out of a million such persons —bnt only that! Closely connected with this is the almost universal habit of employing tobacco, which I regard os second only to opium in its disas trous effects. I do not propose to join in tbe random - ' denunciations that have been heaped upon tbe pipe, the clgur, or iob.cco, as ah article for chewing or snuffing; 1 shall speak of tobacco in its relations.to health; and I express my conviction, which grows every year, when I say, not only that it is a causo of very wide-spread sickness, bat that it ie jackal to (he Hon—that it lays the foundation for intemperance. The use of tobacco ia one of those elementary forms of intemperance which open the door for its more permanent and dreadful forms. I hardly know' how to, accoantXor thpUawme mf&taatioawhlch. among oar youth ia this matter. It seems ‘as though with boys of twelve or fifteen years of age. all considerations of virtue, all thoughts of family name, all examples of those most re* vered and loved, and all warnings against the destruction of health, were as mere straws against the rushing tide of temptation to leatn how to use tobacco. TEE CITY KO PLACE FOB THE NERVOUS. 1 We must mention next, as the cause of In* jury to the health of the community, alt infiu ences which tend to exhaust the nervous sys tem. Among those influences is the excite ment of city life. If there were such a thing as arbitrary power, I should be in favor of hav ing a registration of the people io the city, and having ail those who are nervous turned out iuto;the country. It ought to be against the • law for nervous pepple to go into the city. Thev ore ground to powder here. The bustle of the street, the ceaseless thunder of vehicles, the rush to and fro of multitudes of people, is more than many can bear. It keeps, night and day, afire upon the nerves of many men. The pressure of competition grinds men to a very edge, and kills them. Men of nervous tem perament, without great power of endurance, coming to the city, find the conditions'of suc cess to be eternal industry and eternal thought. There are ten men that cgjx succeed in the coun try, where there is one that can succeed in the city. OVER WORK. Excessiro occupation, then, is another of the undermining causes that work constantly ul men’s health. If 1 bad bad time, before com ing here, to have counted up the number cf men of my acquaintance that during my brief htay here, of upwards ot thirteen years—end it is with wonder that I say that I hove been here even as long as that. Why, 1 am becoming patriorcbjal! It is a great while, looking one way—lf I had had time, I nay, to have counted up the number ot men of my acquaintance that, during this brief period, I have seen broken down, driven into the lunatic ostium, driven into the hospital, or driven into the grave, by the mere effect of exhaustion, of overtaxation, of incessant labor, I think it would have been one cf the most instructive statistical tabula tions that could be made. And men are being destroyed by these causes all (be time. Even of men that are successful, a large per cent, are destoryed. If 1 should say that of such men, through insanity, through idiocy, as a Je suit of the softening of the bruin, through par alysis, or through nervous exhaustion—a gene ral name for innumerable forms of destruction ..of the nerves—if I should say that of such men, through these causes, fifty per cent, are destroyed, I should scarcely exceed the hounds of moderation!
