The Equities ilc lead -r?, gaunt and hungry from outside exposure for a long time past, arc still grinding away at their doleful melodies about the need of mere voting precincts in Chi cego to secure an opportunity for all the peo ple to vote. This comes with charming grace from the very men who used to carry elections and bold power hereby the very inch of man aging that all the people should cot rote. Look at the Seventh Ward and Tenth Ward polls at late elections under Republican sway, and com pare them with what they were in the days </ Mayor Dyer, when howling and dronkes Celts took forcible possession of the approaches to the ballot box, and drove honest Germans away; when a craven and corrupt police dared not interfere, and when citizens who did oppose such outrages, were beaten and maltreated. It was among the earliest frnits of in-coming Re publican reform that an Irish Democratic Al derman elect served ont his term in jail for heading an election mob. Yet these gentlemen are now in the field, and conniving with Republican soreheads to secure greater facilities for all the people to vote, and Aldermen Myers, and Marshall, and McDonald, and other Democratic City Fathers, have, on two evenings of this week, gathered in the Common Connell Chamber, hoping that out oi a bare qaorum might somehow bs jangled tbc change they seek. If these gentlemen are really in earnest to allow every legal voter in Chicago to vote once in his proper Ward on the great questions to be decided on the Sixth of November, we join them in the wish, aad invite them to aid us in bringing it about. Let them rally no “byes” on the evening before, to spend tbc night at the polls. Let them give no Instructions to the “ byes” to keep in the lines all day after they have voted once, nor go from the line of one ward to that of another, to the end of protract, ing the voting, in the hope of wearing ont the patience cf men who are in haste to return to t*-eir banks and stores and office*. Any and all of these will be a departure from tbo stale but usual dodges of Democracy at our elections, and their absence will tell much better In the direction they pretend to drsire, than the crea tion of sew voting precincts. .OctoWr 20, .October 22. .Oclob-rSC .rentier 24. .Oetwivr iC. .October 23. .uc.ubcr !(, .OC’OSKT Ji. .OCtdl-tifiC, .October ?7. .(McIKrSS. .OttjJcraJ. The Sqnatteriles “sicce Pennsylvania” ie fuse to die all at once, bat alow by degrees. They now say they do not expect to carry Illi nois, bet will be Bare to carry Sangamon. Not many days hence it will be only Springfield that they can cany, •* beating Old Abe at his home/* A little later they will abandon that, and take their stand to defeat him in bis Ward. Their last effort will be to indnee Old Abe's hired man, ifhe baa one, to vote against him, or at leasth!sccok*s cousin. They are eager for, and insist upon having some victory hereabouts to cackle over, bat such prospects are fast slipping away. In'pursuance cf their plan of centreing effort on Old Sangamon, the grand rally to meet Lit tle Ddg here this day, Ost. ISth, was diligently trumpeted through the State by Squatter or gans. Every means was taken to get up a crowd; tickets to Springfield and return were sold at Chisago for (3, and any pertou trAo told three tickdt got a free tide. There was to be such a turnout as was never seen, and—so there ...October SO .tfctoUr a 3. Lx* than Oru hundred excursionists came down trom Chicago, and of these many were Rtpabliesns, eager to avail themselves of a cheap ride, to sec Old Abe at home. In fact this desire called in on attendance of Republi cans from various points intbc State, and their presence did much to swell the crowd. Still it would bare all been counted for Little Dag, but for the spirit and enterprise of oar bore here who wero not to be c&agbt ncppicg, bat established and maintained throughout the day, several stands, where neat Lincoln badges were given away free. Every Republican was thus made to show bis colors. The thick sprink ling of Lincoln Badges in that Squatter crowd was “ a set’ler.” Some accounts say tbo Re publicans nearly equalled the Squatters. This they might easily do, for the thing was a failure. “Since Pennsylvania” the Squat ter forces don’t ecem to take an interest in pol itics, and there was no inducement to see Ste phen or “ tcaU him again.” Tbo attendance nlr.ut the stand was a meager one. At the lime when it was the largest, I paced the entire circuit and made it 140 paces, and thinly ranged at that. Stephens of Georgia did not come, and no one expected he would; and Stephen bad it all to himself. His speech waa tbe same old * train, well worn, and delivered at the lowest ebb of spirits ned voice. Tbe curse Little Dug him self evoked In this very Springfield upon “the ruthless hand ” that should invade sacred com promises, seemed to have finally come home to tbe speaki r. He was In the worst of tempers, abused everybody, and ranted against Lincoln, and even worse against bis own divided house hold. Poor Douglas. During tbe day our Republicans were busy circulating the “ good seed.” Douglas' Record went off like hot cakes, and p-oveshot ashes in tbe path of Stephen. That Lecomp'on expose touches him in a sore spot. He winces all over, . and bis friends for him. Every judicious per son says that this meeting here to day drives tbe last nail in Little Dug’s political coffin in this State. Became home to die on the very spot where be once so terribly anathematized him who thculd dare to disturb tbe Missouri Compromise. He did it, and the judgment did sot sleep. To day has seen all costs taxed in tbe suit the people hare given against him. Many came here wavering, who will go home and vote for Honest Ola Abe. If Little Dag could be hired by oar State Central Committee to go through all the “ doubtful counties,” it would settle tbe point in our favor everywheee. Without exaggeration or prevarication the Douglas demonstration here yesterday was a most miserable, and for the Democrats, mortr fy tog failure. Douglas arrived here on Wednes day evening, and was received with a tolerable degree of eclat— a torchlight procession of say four to five hundred “Hickories,” “Rounda bouts,” etc., who escorted tho Little Giant to the American lionae, where be briefly acknowl edged the compliment, and retired. After this there was a little haranguing, and some faeble fire-works, and then expectation went to sleep and droun-d of the coming squatter glories of tbeiaoiro*v- Of course, everybody expected a decided earthquake on yesterday. Public faith was shakes somewhat when the tr.ins came in and brought only some little sqnadsof fifties and hundreds—not making in the aggregate a thou sand, oil told Stall there was the country to rely on—and marshals in blue sashes rode furi ously up and down, looking in vain for the long processions of wagons with flags and banners, from the country precincts. Kino o'clock came, ten o’clock, eleven o'clock, and still no conn try delegations. The formation of the proces sion sould be postponed no longer, and every thing available was ordered into line, and sum med up-foot 776, horse 162, and about 850 more as the contribution from the country in forty* utm wagons I Audio crown tho dismay of the DougUsites, fully ooe-balf of tho crowd on the sidewalks wore Lincoln badges, and every shout for Douglas was met by an answing shout from the enthusiastic Lineolnites. Of course the Douglas leaders were blue, and gathered in sorrowful conclave on the street corners, while the procession dragged its dis consolate squads around the streets, past the palatial residence of the scrip villa an, who stood, hat off, on his steps, bowing to the equat ion, who in turn raised tbeir hickory caps and did him homage. But why enumerate the whole sorrow of the Democrats? Alter dinner, the Chief Squatter and his struggling cohorts repairedto the‘*cir cus lot,” where ho rehearsed that same old rpeech to a crowd of perhaps two thousand— half of them again wearing Lincoln badges. The only remarkable circumstance here was the entire absence of enthusiasm, and the fact that Douglas himself was evidently prostrated and discouraged by the utter failure oi the demonstration. Nor did the demonstration “ shine” any bet ter at night. The torch bearers again patched up a ragged single file i recession, about four blocks in length—shot off some straggling Ro man candles, and the whole affair “ blowed out” at about cine o'clock, leaving the city in dark nesu, and almost as total quiet as if there were no squatters in the land. Yonrs, List night was a gala se? sin for tbe Republi cans of Freeport and Stephenson County. The good news from tbe recent elections has added, to tbeir former zeal, and last evecingtbey came together for a general jubilee. From five to ten thousand people were here, and from 2000 to 2500 torches were carried in precession. The line of march was some three miles long, and along it la ge numbers of private residences were gorgeously illuminated. Stephenson street —the main business street—was one scene cf brilliancy from one end to the other. Tbe Brewster House, a large four story build ing running from street to street, was splen didly illuminated, colored lamps being bung at every window. Child's, Black A Bartlett's four story building, opposite, were illuminated in like manner, and fiom the former to the Brew ster House was thrown. an arch of lighted lamps, beantifnl in design and in execution. The Jcxtmal Office Block presented a magnifi cent appearance. From every window ini the block, and Irom the awnings, were suspended the lamps, while from one of the office windows was suspended a large, magnificent transpa rency, on one side of which was inscribed, “Ohio 25,000, Indiana 15,000, Pentsyl vania 32,000 for Free Labor. Plymouth Hall Block too, was braulifully illuminated on nil sides. In addition to these, numerous stores, offices uud smaller blocks were illumi nated in various styles. There was, too, afloe display of fire works, and all in all, it was ono of the most brilliant scenes we ever witnessed. Tbe enthusiasm was unbounded, cheer after cheer rolling along tbe line. Compared with the Douglas “funeral” of a week since, it—well it bore no comparison. It was a marked con trast. All was in good order, no drunken men seen, nobody long faced, excepting tbe Douglas men or the sidewalks! A prominent feature in the procession was & carriage, in which was a young German lady, dressed as the Goddess of Liberty, with shield and alalf. The'coinage was drawn by two while horses, and was esccrted by mounted Rangers (all German) from Kiddle and Silver Creek. There were at least four hundred Re publican Germans in the procession, many of whom have heretofore voted with the Demo cracy. Held. J. C. The incambency of the Chicago Post Office is these troublous Democratic times, has been characterized by fierce tqnabbles, plots, and counterplot?, for nearly its entire period, bnt more especially since Isaac Cook and the old P. Functionary at Washington established a league offensive and defensive, against Little Dag. In tbe Supreme Court, before Judge Higgins, tbe case of James G. Kerr vs. Isaac Cook, was on trial yesterday. This was an ac tion cf trespass on the case, brought by tbo plaintiff Kerr to recover damages for alleged defalcation of character. Tbe facts, as they appeared in proof, were cs follows: In 1859, a number of Post Office clerks were discharged by the Postmaster—among them Kerr, who was Chief Clerk in tbe Eastern dis tributing room. It was tbo cause of tbe dismissal was their giving evidence or information of some kind, to a person sent oat by the Department at Washington to investi gate some matters connected with thd Chicago Postoffiee.. Not iong after- Übeab-ibmißHati 'or ders were sent out from Washington to rein state them, and they were reinstated. Ere long, however, Kerr, if not others, was again dis charged, and a letter, together with an affidavit made by one Edward W. Shaw, was sent to the Deportment, explaining tbe reasons for such an action. The affidavit seta forth that Kerr, while Chief Clerk in the Eastern distributing room, had told some subordinate clerk that coins, falling oot of letters in the conrso of distribution, upon being found were legitimate perquisites. The letter reads as follows: Peer Omens. Chicago, Aug. 56, 1859. JTm. From the proof it appeared that it had been the custom among the clerks to keep such coins as were found In this way until they were called for; but it did not appear thit this eastern was sanctioned by tho Postmaster, or that he was aware of it. The cause was argued at length by Morris for plaintiff, end Miller for defence. The bearing excited more than usual attention from the racy developments of a local political nature, airing a good deal of the dirty linen of the Happy Family here at home. An Iron Passenger Car. Our Philadelphia guests reached ns yesterday via Cleveland in anew car ef novel construe- tion, placed at their disposal by G. W. Cass, Esq., of the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chica go Railroad. It was mode by Merrick, Hanna A Co., at New Brighton, near Pittsburg. This car is the first the manofaelureis have made, and they arc passing it round for the inspection of railroad men. It is 4» feet C inches long, and 9 feet wide. It has 55 seats. Every part of the car except the seats and inside window facings is of iron. English stove pipe iron No. 20 is used for the panels which are highly orna mented. The car weighs 20,850 pounds, but the manufacturers say that future ones will be a ton or more lighter. The car runs with unusual ease and comfort. The interior is finished in the finest atjle. The saloon is located midway of the car. Between the windows are venti'ators, to be opened or closed at pleasure. All the inside wood work can be unscrewed and removed when necessary to replace a damaged panel. The car is very handsome, and apparently serviceable. Its cost is about $3,C00. It may be seen at the de pot in this city. It is claimed that a leading advantage of this car will be the greater safety of passengers in cate of collision. While the material will re sist crushing, it will be entirely free from splin ters, so dangerous on snch occasions. It is well worth looking at. Suicide at Bloomington. A correspondent writing from Bloomington gives intelligence of a recent melancholy case of suicide in that city, occurring a few evenings since, in which Thomas Sbeny took his own life by cutting bis throat. Deceased was for merly a resident of this city, and in business here, where his genial qualities secured him many friends. Broken up in trade bytheerisis he went to California, thence returned to this city, and has, recently travelled in the employ of a New York house. What led him to the rash step is not staled. His sad fate will be mourned by many here. A Land Orrica Busotass.— A mariner, Capt. J. B.
