The Swiss combination, after trailing last In a field of five, rallied at the half-w-ay mark and proceeded to win by a length from France with a final spurt, the Americnna just falling to land better than third. Holland won the championship in the palr-oared event without cox swain, outlasting the French for vic tory by half a length. The British pair withdrew at the last minute. V. S. Comes In Behind In the four-oared event, with cox swain, the Americans led for the first BOO yards, but Holland shot out In front at the halfway mark, with the United tSatcs holding second place and Ttaly, France and Switzerland trailing In the order named. The Swiss spurted and took the Ipad at 1,600 yards, while the French ; issed the American combination, the crews flashing over the finish line In this order. Holland made it a four-cornered battle until' the crews were within a hundred ' yards of the finish when one of the Hollanders caught a cramp, enabling the Italians to take fourth place. Under the Olympic scoring system, Switzerland and Great Britain were 1n the lead for tho regatta honors at the end of three events with 14 points each, while Holland had 12, France 10. and the United States was in fifth place with nine. The United States met its e-second straight setback a stunning upset when .Tack Beresford, Jr., the British champion, defeated V, E. Garrett Ollmore, the American crack, by two lengths in the ' single sculls event. Beresford, who had been decisively beaten by the American star in the trials, took the lead at the halfway mark and pulled away from hla rival, who appeared to be rapidly tiring and lacking the go for a finishing spurt. Bull of Australia, who led at 600 yards, dropped far back at the three quarter mark and Schneider of Swit zerland finished third, several lengths behind Ollmore. The United States won the doubles aculls event. Houble sculls: United States (Jack Kelly and Paul Costel lo); France, second: Switzerland, third; Brazil, fourth.
