Washington, July 17. Authentic re
ports on the revolution!!!'' situation
In Brazil received today by tlio state
department fram tho American em
bassy In .Kio De Janeiro said 3,000
government troops arrived yesterday
at Santos and entrained for the Sao
Paulo district.
Fifteen thousand .federal troops
have already surrounded Sao I'aulo,
the dispatch said, and that city Is
being bombarded.
A message dated July 12 and for
warded from Sao . Paulo said state
lorces were bombarding the city from
Tpiranga and other points. At that
time shells had fallen within one-half
a block of the American consulato
biillding but no damage to that struc
, ture had occurred. The hotel D'Oeste
had been struck by a shell, however,
and six persons were killed.
JThe advices added that the Indus
trial center, Braz, was being shelled
and had been practically deserted by
the inhabitants.

ing to authoritative advices received
here early today. Recent arrivals
from Santos declare that port is vir
tually closed and the situation ex
tromely grave. '
A prominent South American who
arrived In Montevideo on an Italian
'steamer from Santos in an Interview,
asserted that the rebels at Sao Paulo
apparently were in control and that
the federal troops besieging the me
tropolis have as yet been unable to
dislodge them. "

by the Brazilian government has been
received from La Nacion's Rio De
Janeiro correspondent. The commu
nique states:
"We are operating an important
movement of forces along the entire

Kamonn De Valcra and Austin Stack,
leaders of the Irish republicans, from
Arbor Hill barracks, has been well re
ceived In all quarters. The indepen
dent welcomes the action and believes
it will be approved by the country.
It says, "the common desire Is to bury
bitterness and secure unity among all
sections willing to work for Ireland's
prosperity."
Tho Freeman's Journal, referring to
the proposal of the De Valera follow

clares that "It would not be moral for

his ideas." It says: "one cannot be

PLANS FOR EPINARD
Famous B'rcnrh Race Horse To Be
Taken to Saratoga, During Latter
Part of Next Week.
New fork, July 17. Epinard, the
French horse which was brought to
this country for three races, will be
shipped to Saratoga during the latter
part of next week to prepare for his
first races on the track there, it has
been announced by Eugane Leigh,
Epinard's trainer.
Meanwhile the chestnut four-year-old
Is having easy workouts at Bel
mont park to regain his condition fol
lowing the trip across the pcean. His
exercise yesterday consisted of a slow
gallop In the company of other horses
from the Greentree stables.
Numerous visitors call dally to see
the visitor. Among his callers yes
terday was Georges Carpentler. The
French horse and the French boxer
were photographed In the act of kiss
ing eac,h other, which promoted a wag
to remark that "their next kisses will
probably be leather, n. whip for Ep
ple and a glove for Georges."
Trainer kelgh declared he Is pleas
ed, with the sowing which Epinard
has made towaJl regaining his condi
tion. "Epinard is the best eater that I
have ever trained," said Leigh. "Even
when he has been a little under the
weather he has never refused his oats.

MRS. MARGARET McDONALD
Mrs. Margaret McDonald of Bank street, Plainville, celebrated
her 100th birthday at her home Tuesday. She is probably the
oldest woman in Plainville and is active at the present time. She
cares for a large sized flock of chickens every day, has a clear
memory and keen eyesight and is one of the best liked women in
Plainville. ''When asked how she bore up under her hundred
years of life, she answered "the first 100 years are the hardest."
