Syracuse, N. Y., Oct. 1C Alfred Smith, Jr., -son of Uovernor and Mrs. Alfred E. Smith, and Miss Bertha Gott of this city were married last Tuesday, Mrs. I.llliam Gott, the young woman's mother, told news papermen here today. Mrs. Gott received a telephone call the same day notifying her of the marriage. 'N'hila she is not cer tain where the ceremony took place, she believes it occurred In New l'ork city, where the young woman had been visiting friends. Smith and Miss Gott met at a Syracuse university fraternity dance about a year ago, Mrs. Gott ex plained, and since that time the gov ernor's son has visited the girl sev eial times. Mrs. Gott was unable to name the fraternity at whose dance the couple had met. Miss Gott has lived in this city all her life, and Is a graduate of the public schools and Central High school. Her father. William Gott, is employed by the New York Central railroad, and is engineer of the Twentieth Century Limited. The first intimation Mrs. Gott had of the marriage was shortly after noon last Tuesday, when she re received a telephone call from her daughter, although she does not know from what city the call cam?. "Hello mother," the girl said. "Al and I were married at 11 o'clock this morning." A letter received from New York the next day gave further particu lars of the ceremony, but apparently did not mention the church in which the marriage had taken place, al though Mrs. Gott believes it was St. Patrick's cathedral.
