CUMStlNO Surgeon General, United Blalei Publlo Health Service A good complexion depends In griat measure upon two conditions, an active circulation and a clear skin. Beauty Is, more than skin deep be cause the clearness of your skin de pends to a large extent upon the completeness with which wastes arc eliminated from your body. If your liver, your Intestines or your kidneys as well as the skin are not working effectively, that Is If these organs do not remove the wastes of the body promptly your skin is apt to be blotched nnd sal low and often covered with erup tions. Many people make the mistake of thinking that Ihe care of the faco can be accomplished by merely tak ing rare of the face, They do not realize that, proper earn of the face consists primarily of taking proper care of the body as a whole, care of the Inside as well as the outside of the body. Tour face Is often an outward Indication of tho condition of your body. Fresh air, ventilation, ererclse, the care of the skin of the body, mental vigor, a 6ound diet, together with eorro-t posture, are necessary fac tors in producing a healthy skin and are, therefore, factors which must be considered by those who are am bitions to keep tho skin In a state of perfection, Renlly Symptoms of Plsoase Ton should know that, a great many of the abnormal condition of the skin of tho face arc In reality not diseases at all. Many of these skin diseases, like headaches, are merely symptoms of disease or symptoms of disorders, In some other part of the body. Often times distressing skin conditions are due to disorder In some organ of the body quite remote nnd unsuspected. Faulty diet is one of the common causes for an unhealthy condition of the skin. A lack of fresh air, due to Insufficient breathing Is another cause of unhealthy skin conditions. There are. however, some skin troubles which are not due to disor ders in deeper parts of the body, Or to a lack of fresh air or failure e the part of some organ of the body lo unction properly in lis capacity a;- an eliminator of waste. These so-called local skin conditions are as a rule the result either of poor cir culation In Ihe circulatory system of the bead and face or they arc due lo infection. rnqnestionably many skins are In fected through the means of soiled lingers. Many ob.iects with which the hand comes In contact may be the source of Infecting organisms. Is is not surprising, therefore, de spile the Immunity which man has developed, that facial Infections do occur and are due to the habit of touching the face with contaminated fingers. Some skins, of course, are more susceptible to Infection lhan arc others. A simple rule of hygiene Is. "Po velop the habit of never touching your face unless you first wash your lingers, especially If the skin of your faco is peculiarly susceptible to in fection." Another simple rule of hygiene to "Never use a towel that, has been used by others." And a third Is, "Use your own individual soap." Dirt In Air May Infect Face Dirt carried by the air may also infect the skin of the face. As In the cast of the hair, so In jt the case of the skin, the oil pre serves the skin. While this lllm of oil protects the face under normal conditions, It also acts to a certain , xtent as n "catch-all" for dust and disease genus blown about by the jair. Sometimes these germs may be so active and vigorous a,s to produce jan infection of the skin almost Im j mediately. Fsually, however, this i does not happen. With this fact 'n mind It should be obvious to all that (frequent bathing of the skin and j washing of the face Is essential. Most, skins will submit to frequent washing without protest nrovlded car In tho use of aoup Is exercised, in wanning such a skin a generous amount of lather should be produced with a good soap. This ehould be thoroughly tubbed In aud then at thoroughly washed out. Cold Hater is not as good as luke warm water for this purpose. Cold water docs, however, posses one advantage, It does Increase tho circulation of the blood In tho skin. Tin average healthy skin will per mit a brisk and vigorous rubbing with a towel and such a rubbing will affect the circulation and will he helpful In producing a healthy skin condition.
