. NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1925. INVENTOR URGED BY OWN DESIRES 15 Wish lor Hot Coffee in Bed Fostertd Idea Stockholm, Oct 15 OW Diffi culty to awaltenlns and bl fond. nei for cup ef hot cones In ,bel, wer two factors that led Dr. Gus. 1af Palan, winner of Ui 1913 No bel prUt, to become a successful Inventor. Dr. Dalen as a boy, living in a humble country home, was required to arise aarly, but found It hard to awaken en time. A discarded old wall-clock was repaired to which was added an alarm mechanism with a piece of tlnplata taking the place of tha bell, lie combined tho block-work with a little friction wheel covered with emery paper that began to rotate 15 minutes be fore the alarm went off. Friction against the rough surface of -the paper lighted a match. ; The match was attached to a rod that swung over a gasoline lamp, the cap of which was simultaneous ly removed by another contrivance constructed from a couple of empty wooden spools and a piece of string. Over tho lamp he had placed a coffee' urn containing coffee pre pared the night before., When the slumbers of the- little' Inventor, then 14 years of age, were inter rupted by the alarm going off the room was lighted1 and his coffee was boiling. It was during Dr. Dolen's ex periments with gas accumulators for beacon lights that he lost his sight through an explosion. His inventive genius, however, did not seem to suffer as he has since then given the world a number of new inventions and still continues to di rect the work of his plant In spite of his blindness.
