EXPLAINS SIORY OF DELAY
IN SENDING FIRE ALARM
Fireman Misunderstands Town Clerk
Woodruff' Statement About
Not Having Five Cent Piece
Town Cleric Arthmr Woodruff of
Berlin voluntarily telephoned to
William Hojan of the Southern New
England Telephone Co., today and
stated that there was no delay In
sending In an alarm for fire In Ken
sington yesterday. The Herald last
night printed a statement from Chief
William J. Noble of the Are depart,
ment that he had been Informed an
operator In the New Britain tele
phone exchange refused to allow the
telephone appeal to the fire depart
ment to come through until a nickel
had been dropped In the telephone
coin box.
When Mr. Woodruff tried to K-l
the New Britain department he did
not have a nickel handy. He ex
plained his predicament to the op
erator and says she connected him
immediately with the department.
Later he mentioned the incident in
the presence of a Ureman, who un
derstood that there had been a de
lay because Mr. Woodruff did not
have a five cent piece. The fireman
repealed the story to another fire
man, who told Chief Noble. The
chief was of tho Impression, that a
delay had been caused by the ob
stinacy of an operator. Mr. Hogan
says he has talked with others who
were Interested In having an alarm
sent to the New Britain department
and they say thf the service was
satisfactory.
