Charles Chapman, manager of the Watcrbury division of the Connecti cut company, stated at a wage hear ing in New Haven that one-third of Hie men employed on the Watcr bury division "own their own auto mobiles." It Is no great trick to "own your own" machine, but It would Requite unusual to own the machine of somebody else. Now the good House way and means committee wants to play Santa Claus to the limit, planning to reduce the taxes on cigars, to bacco, alcohol and automobiles. When Representative-Elect Mrs. I logon of Massachusetts called on Hie President asking him to do something about settling the coal strike she was given the usual "nothing doing." The cave man sheik who grabbed a girl and attempted to put her into his automohilo now knows how a real cave looks In jail. These modern caves are far superior to the sort they had In the old days. CENTER LOSES TWO OF ITS FINE TREES Citizens have noted with a feel ing of sadness that two of the large trees on Central park have been cut down. They realize that the Center would never look the same without its trees, and two less is quite no ticeable. An investigation showed that the trees were rotten at the base and were considered dangerous. This having been the case, they had to be removed, although the wood seemed to be in good condition throughout most of the old sen tinels. Now there are two trees less; how about planting others in their place? It will be only a matter of time when the same fate is in store for the other trees at the Center, and if no new ones are planted to take the place of those which have to be removed from time to time, in the course of time the Center will be a bare and dreary spot rather than a place of beauty. Trees have been planted on Central park in the past and could be done again. No tree could be removed from Boston Common without the plant ing of another to take lis place; and when the nearby Public Gardens were laid out a generation or bo ago the first thought, was to insure a sufficiency of trees, despite the fact that the spot is in the center of the Boston business dislrict. Visitors to Detroit have marvelled at the magnificent display of fine trees in the downtown public squares, which are numerous in that city. The city is zealous that they be maintained at their present beauty and none, is ever removed without the planting of another. Of course there is no direct monetary or commercial benetlt from tn.s in downtown narks. On the other hand, the legal point whether the railroad has a right to operate busses through a subsidiary company tho New England Trans portation company - has not yet been determined. The last Lcgisla t "re gave the railroad company the right to operate busses between cities It already serves. Hut the com pany, Instead of following this legis lative mandate, saw fit to set up a separate company. The point now Is, does tliie come under the privilege granted by tho Legislature, or is the New England Transportation company to be regarded as a separ ate company, even though It may be wholly financed by the railroad? It may bo that one of the reasons why the railroad company formed the separa'e bus company was to circumvent the limitations of the legislative grant curtailing railroad bus service to towns along its line. Tho New England Transportation company has been bidding for routes off some of the towns served by the railroad. To grant the railroad's bus com pany priority rights merely In order to enable It to maintain its earn ing capacity would be going a little far. When the New Haven had a monopoly of southern New England transportation Its popularity wa greatly loss than It Is today, when independent bus lines and truck lines have entered the field. The thing for the railroad to do is to give better service than the Independents, and welcome their competition to show that it can do this. The present attltuda favoring a monopoly is too much like a spoiled child wishing to have its way regardless of anyone else. PITTING BITVMIJiors OX THE MAP By "on the may map," of course, New England Is meant. Sundry rep resentatives of West Virginia bituminous coal Interests held a meeting in Boston the other day with the avowed purpose of wooing N'cw England away from the use of anthracite. It was pointed out that until recent years anthracite coal was in common use in Chicago and environs as a domestic fuel but now there is none used at all and tho same holds true of most of the mid dle weet. What was done In Chica go and environs likewise can be done in New England, it was stated. Hence a vast "campaign of edu cation." The, present anthracite strike comes as an opportune time to drill New Knglanders Into the knowledge that low volatile bitumin ous coal is not. only a first class sub stitute for high-priced anthraeile, but. has some distinct advantages. All that is needed by the public is experience In handling it. So far as the coal dealers are concerned, it is said they may be content to handle bituminous coal, and that it will make no great difference to them. The anthracite strike in Pennsyl vania seems likely to be a permanent blow to the anthracite industry if this sort nf tiling develops. New England had remained the citadel of its prosperity if the. bituminous i fellows snceeerl in undermining the ! industry in this tier of states and supplant i" with tlnir West A'irgtnia jcoa!--tn other words, if they suc ' eec'l in ge'tinir the people accustom ed to using bituminous they (the I people) may be content to use it n when there is no anthracite I strike on hand to force such use. Meanwhile Presid"iit. Coolidgc continues to aan l pal regarding the anthracite s.rike. lie s said to lie disgusted with both sides In the controversy.
