Bryan, superin tendent of tlx New Britain divi sion of the Connecticut Co., failed to develop' to any great, extent last aveninff at a meeting of the lioatd and the body voted that a shelter for the car starter at Cen tral park he erected, with the pro viso that, with 30 days' notice, the city may remova It. This recom mentation will be sent to the. common council. Mr. Bryan appeared before the hoard to champion hie petition. H explained that In cold and wet weather the car starter has no shelter and must either stand In a store doorway across th street or faca tha elements. Ho stated that the day starter has been off duty on account of Illness over 64 days this year. He explained that the proposed shelter would not extend any larlher across the sidewalk than the present telephone box does. Here Commissioner Ohlaon started. He asked if tlio Connecticut Co. ever considered protecting its pa trons. Mr. Bryan replied that the Connecticut Co. at one time de sired to erect a waiting station but the. city did not' approve of it. This statement was corroborated by several members of the, board. Mr. Ohlson then recommended that the petition be granted pro sided that the. city has the power to remove the booth at any time. H said the Connecticut Co. has never dpno anything for the city and he questioned whether the city should- help the Connecticut Co. He remarked that the city of New Britain has several times asked the company to cooperate in some matters nnd that thesa re I quests have been turned down. He I said, however, that the starter must he protected, giving that as his reason for approving the measure. Mr. liryan said he will be willing I to erect any sort, of a shelter which lis approved by the board of build ling commissioners and it is ex- period that he will work out a i plan in conjunction with this com J mission. Chairman Frank L. Conlon of t he board stated I hut there har. been better cooperation between I the Connecticut Co. and the city I since Mr. liryan assumed the lead ership of the N"v Hritatn division, than there- ever has been, and staled that reasonable petitions by , him will be met hnlf way.
