"When the flames burst through the deck, there were about sixty of us younger men who were not. in life boats," said Berger. "The places in the first life boats that were swung out on the davits were allot ted to the women and older people. We were left on deck to wait our turn. "We had been called up on deck about 11 o'clock and the life boats were swung out on their davits about halt an hour later. "At that time we were all laugh ing and joking. They told us tho boat was on fire, but It seemed ri diculous for we couldn't see any flames and there was only an oc casional slight puff of smoke. As the hours passed however and wc waited on deck with our life pre servers already adjusted the smoke began to get thicker. "Orders were given for the wornen and old folks to get into the life boats. There had been a slight, pan ic when the boats were first put out through the people pushing aside to get Into them. The boats were not lowered until the last minute, how ever, and when the flames finally did burst through, there were some of us like myself who had to drop over the side of the boat on the end of ropes and hong there, won dering whether we could hold on despite the growing heat until a life boat could get back to take us off. "Some of the men who were hanging by tho ropes finally fell Into the water and were later picked up as they were swimming close to the burning boat. CHURCH VOTE IS CLOSE Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 19 UP) Anion by three conferences of the Methodist Episcopal church. South, voting today on unification with tho Methodist Episcopal, cuts down the lead of the ufflrmatlve column over tho negative by 40 votes. Southern Methodist headquarters announced tonight. The vote i 4.031 for and 3,538 against. The pro-unlflcatlon vote now leads the cntl by only 493 votes. INSPECTS NAVAL DISTRICT K. B. Webster, chief machinist, !'. S. N., was in New Britain this morning and Inspected the dis trict. He was well pleased and said the city has made a good showing In the navy and he hopes for a continuance of the condition. Navy enlistments from New Britain are accepted at Hartlord and the navy recruiting station, post office building, and all enlist ments are for four years. The navy Is desirous of enlisting special mechanics, such as boiler makers, machinists nnd pattern makers and is also accepting first enlistments iu the hospital corps.
