Although the administration has made considerable of a fuss over thu economies In governmental business, It remained for Representative Bynea of Tennessee to throw a doubt In the minds of many eco nomical beholders. Instead of tho costs of running the government being less, it ap pears tbey have Increased. Thero may bo some good reasons for tho showing, but In view of the figures one would think" there would be a cessation of the talk about econo my. According to the Tennesseean's figures, there has been a steady in crease during the last three years, thla year's figures being computed exclusive of the postal deficit. ' In view of the fact that on the same day Representative Madden, Republican, of Illinois, chairman of the appropriations committee,' de clared "wasteful expenditures" have been made by those administering the army and navy, some degree of confirmation was obtained. And on the same day the ma jority report of the special Senate comitteo investigating the internal revenue bureau reported that mo'u than $10f,00,nu were deducted for war amortizations, this plum going io a score of concerns. H Is reported bat President t'oolldge, keenly feels, the criticisms nguinst thu administration mado in t'ongress, and has told newspaper correspondents that congressional oratory is largely composed of poli tics. This was not a very good state ment to make. There arc many thoughtful citizens who will con elude that, much of the economy talk has been largely made for po li'ical effect. M DONALD 'S HARD M'C'K When Miss Clarissa A. Horton of Windsor Locks won her suit for S'.'6,000 against John A. MacDonnld, highway commissioner, because a slate highway through that town was unprotected and caused on au tomobile in which she was riding to fall 40 feet, attention of the state was forcefully railed to the mani fold efforts mado along the high nays to prevent just such accidents, perhaps the weak spot in the state highway system in Windsor Locks was only one of half a dozen such places existing lon lh state's roads: and of course, as fate would have it. something had lo happen (here. KLISTTS BICitiEST VICTORIES In enumerating some of the not abte Republican victories for which the late George W. Klctt was credit ed with, a political writer in tho Bridgeport Telegram refers to the fact that In 1922, when most of tho cities of the state Including Bridgeportwent for Fitzgerald, tho nemocrntle candidate for governor, Judge Klett of New Britain sent In a Republican majority of 1,500. And when the eight Republican sheriffs were elected In all eight counties, New Britain saved the day for Ed ward W. Dewey of Hartford by rolling up a majority of 1,420 for him, nfter Hartford piled up 4.400 for Gabb. These were accounted among Klett's most notable vie torles. But in local city contests. the political writer adds. Klett was not so successful as everyone living here knows which the political writer ascribes to a factional dif ference within tho party. It would appear that the factional difference had little effect upon the city's act. ion In state elections. NFW POWER riMWECT Six electric concerns in Connec ting would form a G,000,000 power project at Windsor Locks and promiso to build a plant cost ing J200.000 immediately if tho rublic Utilities Commission ap proves the combination. Naturally there, are some objec tions, and the financial plan Is es pecially attacked. Samuel Fergu son, president of the Hartford Kleclric Light company, told the commission that, the financing plan Is one of those which lately have become the subject of much criti cism. The lawyers for the mergeri tis firms, however, protest that the financing plan W above reproach. It will be for tho P. V. C. to de cide who Is right. The charge that there is con t.wni.i of n. sneculalive nature in mergers, such as have tilled the financial sections of the newspa pers lately, will have to bo dis proved if the. public is to have 100 prr cent, confidence in them. The coal strike to date having cost the miners nearly $148,n0,0no in wages and a loss of nearly 32, 000,000 tons of coal produced, a thoughtful person is likely to ask: What kind of a victory is possible for either side under such circum stances?
