One day about two weeks ago. Flood is reported to have carried an armful of wood Into the house, us an accommodation. He told the girl that he would return later. He re turned and is said to have attempt ed to assault the young woman, wjio was washing clothe in a set tub. She scre.aintd and struggled, but he placed a hand over her mouth, nearly shutting off her breath, It is claimed. He released her when a cat jumped from a nearby table, cvi dently startling him. Flood then left the house. Want to Withdraw Resignation. Flood resigned after Chairman ICeevers, upon hearing the girl's story, told him that If he did not resign he would be suspended and dlven a hearing by the discipline committee. A communication was read at' last night's meeting of tho board, this communication being in Flood's handwriting, asking that he be allowed to withdraw the resigna tion. Commifsloner Walter Blair, after hearing that the man had been forced to resign by tho chairman, asked why the case had not been referred to the discipline committee of the board for investigation. Chair man Keevers explained that out of consideration for the girl, her moth er, Flood's family and in order to protect the name of tho fire depart ment, he had tried to rid the de partment of the man without pub licity "If I had the came, case to morrow, I would do just as I did in this one," ho stated. Commissioner Blair then stated that It was his understanding that Flood claimed that he was not given a square deal. The Chairman re plied that. Flood had approached him but that he had given the man no consideration whatsoever, due to tho seriousness of the offense, add ing that it was lucky that he was not arrested. Thereupon, the board voted unanimously to accept Flood's resignation. Consider Specifications!. Fireman James Carroll of f.ngino Co. No. 2 was suspended until April 1 after the board heard the report' of the. discipline committee which investigated the case on Monday evening. Carroll was suspended on January 21 by Chief Noble for be ing under the influence, of liquor, in which condition he is alleged to have hurled Insulting remarks et Chief of Police. William C. Hart. Chief Noble informed the board of the suspension and the discipline committee got busy. In addition to the suspension, Carroll was lined his pay from Jan uary 21 until April 1, a ma'ter of 'h a week for that period.
