It 13 regarded as a sisa of tho times In England and of tho pro;jres3 tctvard tho equalization of the sexes that tbo 'life assur ance oEces arc paying more attention to the insurance of female lives, and that thi3 branch of their business is fncreasinj:. Tho married women's property act, vrhich secures them in tho enjoyment of their own prop erty, and under -which they can dispose of the sums payable at death as they please, has doao a good deaLto develop the insurance of female lives, and the Liwease ia the number of 'women who earn their own living, and have gone in for an independent career with out regard to matrimony, has also helped the movement. The latter class specially favor endowment policies payable either at death or a certain age, "Women who have-undertaken the. la borious profession of nursing, for instance, look forward to a time when they will bo set aside, and when a few hundred pounds may be very acceptable, and so they arrango for tho payment to fall due - at fifty, or fifty-five years of age. Actuaries of tho old school do not relish these new fangled notions, as they pegard-them, being a clear departure from the principle of insurance against death; but insurance against lifo in the years of decay Is in actual experience quite as great a necessi ty. Endowment policies are a need of tho age, and lifo offices do well to supply it. Cer tainly women who are their own bread win ners appreciate tho system. If the extonsion of insurance among ladies indicates progress toward equality, the differ ence, in tho premiums charged proves tho con tinued existence of inequality. It is not to be supposed that insurance offices are influenced by sentiment in making a distinction, but are led to do so by the cold calculations of their actuaries. They hold that a woman's life is less certain in tho married state than the man's, and this conclusion is reflected in their table of premiums. The practice of tho offices varies, but some charge women 5s. ad-, ditional per annum for every 100 assured until they attain 50 years of age. Xo rebate is mado for tho unmarried, the assumption being that almost cvery'healthy girl will en ter tho wedded state. If tho number of women who go in for an independent voca tion, however, increases materially it will only be fair to modify tho rulo, as the risks represented by the extra premium are not then run by tho insured. Tho fact that tho additional levy of 10 per cent, or so is not mado after 50 is an admission that the sexes aro under the samo conditions when on equal terms. Indeed, tho female life is really held to be tho best, apart from tho period of spe cial risk. Taking tho annuity table of tho Scottish Widows' fund as an illustration, we find that the rato of annuity per cent, is slightly greater on tho female life up to Si, and then falls below tho male lifo, tho assumption being that having passed that period the wo man's lifo is tho longer, and more annual pay ments will havo to be made by the office. A few comparative figures bring this out very clearly: Malo Lifo. Femalo Life. Age. Annuity per cent. Annuity per cent s. d. s. d. C2 4 4 B 4 4 10 20. 4 11 C 4 11 7 ai 4 13 10 4 15 11 S3 4 10 3 4 17 1 40. 5 0 4 5 4 S CO. C 0 7 0 3 11 60. 8 3 10 7 10 6 70 11 14 7 It 4 6 73 15 0 5 14 7 2 Years ago cno office quoted lower rates of premium for women than men, in tho belief that all through the female life was tbo best, but their experience was against their theory and they gavo it up. Tho special risks being passed, tho woman's life ia, however, admit ted to bo tho best. Ono circumstance which weighs with the offices in tho distinctions they draw is this, that tho medical advisers can speak with more certainty, from various causes, as to what i3 or is not a good lifo in tho case of men than of women, and this, no doubt, is taken into consideration in that lev eling system of averages which actuaries de light to work out. Pall -Hall Gazette. Boulanser's Neglected "Wife. iCo more pathetic spectacle confronts the eyes of tho world than that of ilme. Boulan gcr. Hers is a sad, though handsome face, in which pain has cut more lines and grooves than time, while to listen to her low, sweet voico is to wonder how the general can en dure passing any of his days beyond the reach of its subtle music. She is a gentlo little heart broken lady, from whom the iron hands of I ambition have clutched all that she found best in love. And she has not even tho sati- j faction or knowing that tho man who tnrned the sunshine of her earlier days into thobleak desolation of the present ever gives her a sin gle thought. Still she does not condemn him. "It is not for me to judge him," she sometimes says when tome one accosts her concerning him; "we loved each other once I Some day, r she usually adds, "ho will need my love again. I do not wish to be divorced from him be cause I want to retain the right to care for him when all the rest of the world forsake him when, save bis wife, ho ba3 no friend." Paris Figaro.
