SAVING MONEY ON $5 A WEEK. your Olrls Who Illro Two Booms and Uvo Tocether as a Family. The question is asked over and over again: "How do girls who .are-employed in stores and shops at small salaries lrvo?" It would bo surprising to knowtbenum ber who manege to oxist on $5 a week, And who have discovered the art of making' $1 go as far as $2 would ordinarily. "Savo up money on 85 a wcok?" asks Borne incredulous person. There are not many, it must ho admit ted, bnt four poor girls, each working from 8 o'clock in the morning until 6 at night, thiee as salesgirls and the other in n shop, have for two yeans been trying tho plan of co-operative houwekeoping, which promises to become a perfect system for working women who cannot afford to board at the plsco thoy prefer, or become dissatisfied when they mdertako to try cheaper places. When tho store where three of tho friends work lias closed for the day tho three proceed to tho nearest corner, whore they arc met by tho other moinlxir of tho family, and the four walk home together. Having heard of the pleasant times which these girls have at their apartments and being desirous of seeing for herself how tho plans are carried out the writer, by Hpecial invitation, recently took an evening meal with thorn. Tho house is on a side street within easy walking distance of down town, and the room up two flights. Tho latter is a largo apartment and has throe windows, which are prettily draped with dotted muslin tied back with yellow ribbons. Tho walls are tiicd with a pale cream color and tho whole interior showed 1 he good taste of tho occupants. A folding bed of cabinet shape, in tho frenfc of which is a long mirror, and a bro:d conch, which is albo a bed; two easy chairs, one rocker and several othor chairs are alJ tho larger pieces of furniture. In front of tho door loading to the side room, which is used as a kitchen, is a larga screen, evidoutly of homo manufacture, but decidedly ornamental. Two sets of shelves adorn tho spaces be tween the windows, and theso are filled with books. Thoro are also a few good pictures hung about, and on the mantel pieco aro little ornaments and pretty things, watched over by a small bust of Dickons on a bracket. Whilo the writer was admiring tho neat ness of the room and praising tho general appearance ono of the girls had tet tho table. There was no array of silver, but tho dishes were dainty although there wcro not many of them, and the food was not spoiled by apologies, and everything passed off smoothly, for all wcro hungry. After a whilo tho cost of tho meal was considered, and found to bo just 4S cents. That did not include sugar, butter or cof fee, tho former costing the girls 20 cents a wccU, butter about 50 cents and the coffeo tho samo. Two cans of condensed milk at 13 cents each bring tfae total up to $1.46. At tho end of the woek tho girls mako up thoir cash accounts, and the cxponses for tho family amount to nbout 1.80 on an average. Thoy hire tho room unfurnished, with tho exception of tho bods, and conse quently aro able to hire at tho low price of ill a month. In tho bamo room wliich has been men tioned is running water, and many shelves haw been "builfc in" to make things moro convenient for tho housekeepers. Tho ga stove, bought at a bargain, is set on a little raised platform in the corner, wh.ch is covered with a neat oilcloth. Tinware is hung up all about, and every thing looks as ordoriy as possible. They do not find tune for many fancy dishes, but they havo plenty of wholesome food, and appear to enjoy thoroughly their man ner of living Occasionally tliay are invited out to spend Sunday or to tea during tho week, but they fed very much at home in their coey room which th havo occupied together so long, and think their friends who havo Kich dolafV experiences in hunting up boarding places and trying to live on smnll Salaries would bo much moro contented if & Ley tried co-operative hous eping. oston uiooe. Woman I.nye. Too Finns' I'lnns. Tho average woman is not indolent. She bvortaxos hand, heart and brain, and "means well," as the phrase is A twenty Cfth hour would be no boon to her. She uould simply lay plans for a half doren. The result of planning more than can pos sibly be accnmpuHhed is harassing in the i:tronio, and tho consciousness of 1 asks ar ranged for but not accomplished drives elecn from tho eyes, of many a lovmg, self ncrifleing mother, who doe not realize that her fault lies not in hor fsilureto meet a 1 tho demands which she allows, but in 1 t unjust (Ktimate of the limitations of t me, born of the eqnaily unjust estimate r! her own reponsibihtiw to hor family d the world m general. THE GREAT MODERN ART CRITIC. The Unhappy lafo of John Raskin, Who Recently Attempted Salcltle. Tho recent aiyiouncement that in a fit of insanity the. celebrated art critic, Jobs Raskin, aftenypted to commit suicide c- johx nussiK. not fail to revivoin the minds of his friends nnd admirers recollections of his unhappy private life. Many yran aijo he married a beautiful woman, but hi, domestic felicity was of brief duration, for Mrs. Ruskin soon secured a divorce, and not long afterward became tho wife of Millais, the painter. After this painful episode Mr. Ruskin devotfid himself solely to literature and art. He was but 34 years old when he threw down the gantlet to all tho critics in England, and virtually told them that they did not know their profession. They howled back at him, they abused hjm, they scorned him, they laughed at him. Bnt he stood his ground, and pulled hiHtily ntyilnst the misrhty current that set in against him. The torrent ran fast, but it didn't run long. Ruskin tried their enn cisru by appealing to naturo as a model for art, while they depicted nature in accord ance with a certain school of painting. Ruskin soon began to gather advocates, and it was not long before he had effected a revolution. Tho tide that set in a tide that he had turned waa one of extreme realism. He went so far as to donounco Raphael'.1 "Charge to Potor," on tho ground that tho upostlcs aro not dressed as man of that time and place would have boon when go ing out llshing. Ho held to an almotrt brutal reabsin in ovprythintf, and preached his doctrino whether men would hear or whether tlwy would forbear. He soon ral lied a little coterie of artista about him and formed a school styled the pre-Raphacl-ites. Tha principal founder of the bchool wa3 Dante Gabriel Rofesetti, since better known as a pout than an arti.it. He held bus little court in Loudon for many yearn, and a great number of younjjmentatkisXet. His chief supporters at 0t were Holman Hunt and Millakt, the latter of whom be came tho husband of Mrs Ruskin after her divorce, which was procured in Scot land.
