tion for a cele
bration in the
Enelish one, but

Ambassador Bayard is very anxious, it
seems, for the affair to be quite imposing-,
and he lias a peculiar reason for
this. It will be remembered that his
'remarks at a recent London dinner
were most unfavorably compared with
those of his brother ambassador in
jFrance, and said to be lacking in true
Americanism. These criticisms hurt
'Mr. Bayard greatly, for he is sensitive
'on the subject of his patriotism. His
jfriendly remarks concerning the Britr
lish have, as is well known, been con
strued into a tendency to snobbishness.
A Trip to Colorado
Can be made cheaply this summer by

tion a sojourn in London curing the
week which includes July 4. His.efforta
.have proved 'uniformly successful. Al
ready it is announced that among the
guests in London for the grand Inde
pendence day dinner will be Chauncey
M. Depew, Seth Low, Wayne MacVeagh,
ambassador to Italy, and numerous
others equally prominent. The Ameri
can society, just formed in England
through Mr. Bayard's efforts, is giving
hearty aid to the scheme. Fireworks
will be an after-dinner feature, and
'Mr. Bayard will make the speech of the
evening.
An extraordinary degree of interest
jhas been aroused by the knowledge of
'the efforts Mr. Bayard is making for
this occasion. It seems that he has
.even forwarded to New York to Amei
icans in sympathy 'with him rough
tdrafts of his speech, and even Mr.
Cleveland has seen these notes and ap
proved them.

has been very adroit in managing tho

derstood. Gov. Morton has all along
.been eager to bury differences, and,
thanks to his diplomacy, matters havo

independence of Piatt, but his inde
pendence of Strong and his supporters.
'Mr. Morton acts solely as ho thinks
best, regardless of any factional views.
He will be no man's man, not even a re
former's man..

but upon harmony in its own, and there
