IAST WEDNESDAY EVENING
IVliss Junkerman Entertained
Thursday,
lASt Wednesday evening Mrs. Cojone-1
iBryant and her da.ush.ter, Mrs. Welles
lililler, entertained a large lawn whist
pzrty at their pretty home, 1421 Park Place
avenue. The hostesses very wisely con
cluded that an cu:-of-door reception at
4his season was a plan very much supe
rior to receiving in the house. To this
IBnd the heavily-shaded lawn was elabo
rately lighted by display lanterns and a
'toyriad of Sights from the large double
-Brtndows of the house. The tables, nine
In number, were bo arranged in a double
.eemi-circle a9 to receive all the necessary
light, and the comfortable result of this
Jiappy arrangement was that the fortu
nate guests were afforded a most enjoy
able evening; spent in the cool of the
Jlight breezes beneath the pleasant
rusting of the trees- and lawn shrubery.
The nine tables were arranged in numer
ical order for the progression of the win
ning players, the head table being nearest
lht walk leading up to the house. This
was entirely a novelty in "Wichita, and
received very glowing commendatory
comment from the guests present.
Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. filler received
the arri-ing guests underneath the larg
est trees in the yard, and each party was
then escorted to the hall and parlors of
he house to remove hats and wraps. For
the first hour the main feature was get
ting acquainted, and no entertainers ever
?were more successful and energetic in tire
effort to see that all comers, were at once
made -acquainted with the rest present.
Dur.ng this social! and visiting season the
cmitlemen grouped together on tho
veranda and smoked and chatted, the
(honors for this part being extended by
Colonel Bryant in person, -while the two
Kiostesws in gracious manner looked after
"the pleasure of the ladies. Promptly at 9
o'clock the little bell In charge of Mrs.
Miller rang out the "muster" call, and
ach guest was provided- with a dainty 5
tittfe 'tastspllated card with the table and
xxuple number, and all -were assigned to
'tthehr places. For three hours a very en
tertaining tourney of whist was enjoyed,
nil the players entering thoroughly into
ttfte enjoyment of the always popula.T and
Sriterestlng game of whist. At 11:S0 the
Bilver bell announced the games at a
iclose, and servants immediately arranged
Che tables for luncheon, and certainly all
he gay party were ready for this event.
CThe two receiving ladles, assisted by Mrs.
"Will Wallace, then personally supervised
!he serving of refreshments, which were
erved In four courses, commencing with
dainty and finely selected salads, and
posing with coffee. During- this Interest
ing feature the guests were merry with
conversation, stories and pleasantries.
ThroughoutHhe evening, both during the
teard playing and the refreshments, the
party was entertained by sweet music
vrhJch came floating out over tho as
sembled party from tho open parlfors of
the house.
Ixmg after midnight the prizes were
presented, and after more informal chat
.tlng, as though loth to leavo so pleasant
n, scene, the guests at last departed, car
rtiges being in waiting from the city for
thtse living at a distance.
Ti'iis was in every way a most success
ful and brilliantly attractive affair, both
airs.- Bryant and "Mrs. Miller being un-
tiring in their easy and graceful efforts

Electric paeemaking has turned out a,
fizzlo. It was brought to this country by
ths Jollu brothers of France, and they
stated they would "bum" the American
professionals up. They arranged to pull
Jimmy Micnael a five-mllo exhibition
against time, and promised the cranks
that all world's records wou2d b broken.
The result was that Michael rode all
around the machine and called for the
old-fashioned pacemakers. French ideas
are generally weak in practicability.
Wichita is full of bicyci riders, bul
there has never been a successful racing
meet, sfrom a financial standpoint, since
1E92.

Accomplish this and you will have covered

Motor cycles are gaining ia favor

It fs fair to presume that the man who
wrote the following had never worked a
tandem or he would not have been in a
poetical frame of mind:
She is a queen, her throne a wheel.
Radiant fair as e'er was known.
And I who do the pedaling feel
That I'm the power behind th throne!
Two negro women rode graceful? around
the loop end of Riverside drive the other
afternoon, and arriving at the bridge dis
mounted and took their places with the
rest of the wheelfolk already resting1
there. The two women were of the purest
Ethiopian type, but in costume, manner
and every detail they were the most irre
proachable of wheelwomen. Perhaps their
suits were of a trifle less elegant mate
rial than some, but never were there suits
more trim or hats more jaunty.
Tho two propped their wheels against
the railing at Just the same angle, as all
the rest reposing there; up Trent their
hands to their heads to straighten their
hate, just as up went the hands of alT
the other women to straighten their hats,
and when they sat down up went their
hands to give their neckties a twitch the
first thing, just as up went the hands of
all tho other women to give their neckties
a twitch the first thing.
Then, like all the other women, the two
produced their handkerchiefs. A all the
other women did, they began to mop their
faces. And presently, one, if anything the
duskier of the two, turned to the other
and said: "Look hyah, honey, is my face
bery red?"

Mrs. Eliza Jloldridjrc.
Thursday, the 28th Inst, the body of
Mrs. Eliza Holdrldge, who resided at 165S
South Lawrence avenue, was put away
by the sorrowing relatives and friends.
Though quiet and modest in tho extreme,
she will be held in loving remembrance
by a large circle of friends. Her life was
full of kindly ministries for not only those
bound to her by family ties, but for all
whose needs came within reach of her
helpfulness. Many acts of kindness are
attested to by friends whose lives are the
richer for association with hers. Truly,
as Ruskin says: "The path of a good
women is indeed strewn with flowers, but j
rhey rise behind her footsteps, not before
them."
Never ostentatious in her piety, Mrs.
Holdridge had implicit faith in the guid
ing hand of the Master. The day before
her death occurred she said, "if the Mas
ter has any more work for me to do, I
shall recover; but if He has no further
use for me here, the sooner I die the bet
ter, and I am content to go." Her relig
ion was nota mere incident in her life,
but was a component part of it; and the
exquisite perfection manifested in the de
tails of all her domestic duties was but
the outward expression of the order and
purity which reigned within. 'To earth
is the loss, and to Heaven is the gam.
when such as she die."
