CAPTURED ALLEGED HARNESS THIEVES AR RESTED BY SHERIFF SIMMONS Unique Method Adopted to Hide Sto len Property. Lon and Meredith Wlddows, two young men living near Valley Center, were ar rested by Sheriff Simmons yesterday morning on the charge of stealing two sets of harness from Mr. Crcaser, who lives between Valley Center and Bentley, Wednesday night. While Mr. Simmons was bringing them to this city to lodge them in jail, they acknowledged their guilt. When Mr. Creaser went to his barns yesterday morning to feed his horses, he noticed that two sets of harness, which were hanging In the stable the night be fore, were missing. Going outside of the barn, he discovered indications in the grass where the harness had been dracged out to the road, whero It had then been placed in a buggy. The buggy had a wobbly wheel and as the ground was soft, he could easily follow the buggy by the track of the wheel. He fol lowed it until It turned in toward the house of Mr. Wlddows, four miles north west of Valley Center. When he came to the end of the tracks ho rodo on to Valley Center and tele phoned to Sheriff Simmons to come at once. Mr. Simmons came to Valley Cen ter on the morning Santa Fe train and together the sheriff and Mr. Creaser went to the home of Mr. Wlddows. No one was about on the premises but ono young man and Mr. Simmons and Mr. Creaser looked Over the place ccrefully, but found nothing. In order to throw the young man off his guard, Mr. Creaser represented that he wanted to find someone to work for him and Mr. Simmons passed himself off a3 a land buyer. Mr. Wlddows and his three sons were Working in the field five miles away from the house and Mr. Simmons and his com- rfljilcyi.t;,aeclded to interrogate them. On the nfoyno the field Mr. Simmons found a place where a horse had rolled and leading from there he saw a trail. He followed this trail to the straw stack in the field. He placed his hand on the strawstack. felt around carefully and finally pulled out n sack of harness. He told Mr. Wlddows that he believed some one of the family had stolen the harness and asked which one had been away from home the night before. Mr. Widdows replied that Ion and Meredith had. They w ere then plac d under ar rest and started towars the county jail. On the way Mr. Simmons accused them of the offense, but they denied it. Finally so it is alleged, one of them asked Mr. Simmons if he got both sacks of harness. Mr. Simmons had not known before that two sacks of harness had been taken, but as soon as the young man had said that he was asked by the sheriff what he knew about two sacks and again was f-ceused of the robbery. Mr. Simmons stated last night that the young man con fessed and statfd that there was another sack of harness in the straw stack. ROBBER SCALES WALL IN VAIN He Was Frightened by Wo man's Scream and Ran LEAVING LADDER BEHIND Attempt Made to Enter Resi dence of Mr, Donnelly. The latest plan of Wichita, burglars to enter houses is to place a ladder against an upstairs window and climb in that way. That mode was attempt ed at the home of Douglas Donnelly.who resides over 617 East Murdock avenue, Wednesday night, but the robber was grightened away by Mrs. Donnelly, who discovered him as he was about to en ter the house. In the residence of Mr. Donnelly is a hall used for a pantry which connects the front room with the kitchen. In this hall is a window opening onto the alley to the west of the building. Wednesday night Mr. Donnelly's little girl was giving a party to some of her friends and the children, together with Mrs. Donnelly, were in the front part of the house. Mr. Donnelly was not at home. About 10 o'clock Mrs. Donnelly heard a noise coming from the direction of the pantry and upon entering the hall she saw a man on a ladder who was about to enter the window. She was badly frightened, and exclaimed: "What does this mean!" The burglar was fearful that Mrs.Don nelly would summon assistance and he decided to make his escape while he had a chance. He scrambled down the lad der, took It away from the window, ran Into the street, where he dropped the ladder and continued his flight to place of safety. Yesterday, morning the ladder was found in the street. It had been stolen from a woman living in the neighbor hood. BAND CONCERT TONIGHT i- k h':n Mow ken.
