H ay den Taswod Aivay Tues day Even in sr. James R. Hayden died Tuesday even ing of Bright s disease at his home, cor ner of Hillside and Central avenues. He was born July 17, 1869, in Marion county, Mo., and came here four years ago for his health. He lived in Kansas City a number of years. He worked some time as a motorman on the Wichita street car lines. Several months ago the dis ease so undermined his health that he could no longer work, and fr some time he has been confined to his bed. He leaves a wife and a daughter 12 years of age. He was a Knight of Pythias, and this order will assist at the funeral, which well be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the home of his father-in-law, D. A. Snyder, corner of Chautau qua avenue and First street. Interment i will be in Maple Grove cemetery. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schoff, last ednesday. a three and one-quarter-pound baby boy. New York; Nov. -19. It- now develops that when the Mollneux case first at tracted public interest, Richard Croker, then leader of Tammany hall, took a deep interest in the investigation to find the murderer of Katherlne B. Adams. Mr. Croker even went so far as to en gage a special counsel to find out what was being dono in the district attorney's office in connection with his work. "Mr. Croker," said a prominent lawyer, "had received Information which led him to believe that a deliberate effort was j being made to suppress certain evidence j in connection with this crime, and the j district attorney's office was a party to j it. Mr. Croker at that time wished to avoid even the appearance of any scan- I .- dal In any of the city departments, and 1 particularly In the district attorney's of- j fice, and sent for a lawyer who has been t prominently Identlflod with Tammany and has figured in cases of national im portance. "I want you," said Mr. Croker to the lawyer, "to arrange for your appointment as a special assistant district attorney by Colonel Gardiner for the sole purpose d? taking charge of this murder investiga tion. "There are some ugly rumors that the investigation into the cause of death oi Mrs. Adams is not being conducted for I the purpose of finding out the truth and i want you to get at the bottom facts ana i proceed accordingly. , j "Now, this was at the time Mollneux j had been mentioned as a suspect, and I the police and district attorney's ofilce were not working in harmony in thi3 case. t "This lawyer who had been consulted by Mr. Croker looked into the case and reported to Mr. Croker that he did not want to have anything to do with It. '."xiie lawyer said: 'Mr. Croker. if I were to take up this case, from the In vestigations I have made, I would not take Mollneux as a suspect, but would take up two men whom I believe ought to be prosecuted for this crime.' " 'All right,' replied Mr. Croker, 'I do not care who is involved or what position they may hold, I want this thing cleared up and pushed to the limit.' "Mr. Croker's representative did not ap pear in the case, because at that time Assistant District Attorney Osborne had been assigned to it and was making in vestigation apparently along tho lines indicated by Mr. Croker. "Mr. Osborne had a suspect in mind ! other than Molineux at the time of the j coroner's inquest and would have kept j on this course if he hod not been hauled ' off by Captain McClusky of the Detective ' Bureau and Detective Sergeant McCaf ferty. Osborne directed attention to Mol ineux and the facts bi ought out by Gov ernor Black at the last Mollneux trial wero forgotton. jgj "WICHITA'S LARGEST SHOPPING CENTER." .
