He went from the Jail to the underbrush on the Cotton vcood river and was in hiding the greater part of the time un,til he reached the house. Mrs. Wyatt, according to Montgomery, under pressure of threats, dressed his wouna. The bullet which pierced his left lung failed tb break the skin on his back ami this bullet was cut out by Mrs. "Wyatt. It is believed that during the night. Montgomery was taken from his hiding place under the Uoor and placed In a bed in the room containing the ent rance to the place where the rriurilcrer was found. It aroused thp suspi cions of several persons, but nothing de finite . was ascertained. Today., for ths first time Uia curtains ware all- pulled down and this further excited the curi osity of those residing near the AVyatt home. Mrs. "Wyatt and sons, Jim and Al "Wyatt were placed tinder arrest by Sheriff Car penter and deputies and taken to the county jail. Their crime is a serious one and it may mean a term in the peniten tiary for each of them, especially the woman. Bob Wyatt, another member of the family, is now serving a sentence for highway robbery. Montgomery, as ho reclined on his cot In the federal jail, gave much evidence of suffering. There is a several day's growth of beard on his face and his face Is drawn, cither from the suffering as a result of his wounds, or the realiza tion of the position he is now in. His long black hair' is unkempt, denoting that it had no attention for severs days. His black eyes snapped as he noticed the close watch the many officers wore keeping on him, and his entire appear ance gave every indication that the man Is one of more than ordinary brightness. The search for Montgomery has been kept up without vigilance since his es cape on Thursday of last week. The officers were satisfied that he had not left the country. Prior to his attack on Jailer Emmcrson, Montgomery left a letter for Sheriff Car renter telling him that he realized what desperate chances ho was taking in es caping, but that his liberty meant every thing to him. He also stated in the let ter that escape he would, and that it would be useless to follow him, as he would le prepared for any emergencv. The letter only made Sheriff Carpenter npd his deputies more determined to get Montgomery. "Wra. Grady, confined in the county jail on a charge of stealing chickens, was one of the men who had helped plan for Montgomery's escape. Gray was to leave the jail at tne same time, but when the hour arrived, he lost his nerve, refusing to go in response to Montgomery's re tjuest. Gray was taken Into County Attorney McOuire s office this morning and tokl oillcers all that lie knew about the mat ter. Mrs. "Wyatt lias often visited her eon, Bob. in the jail and during these visits met Montgomery. She liked his ap pearance and in fact, was Infatuated with him. According to Gray, she fx rnished" Montgomery with a revolver for the pur pose of killing Sheriff Carpenter. Mont gomery tried to shoot Carpenter twice as he sat in his cell, but something hap pened each time to prevent it. This, however, was unknown to Carpenter. A pirl friend of Mrs. Wyatt was also one of the members of tlw party helping to plan for Montomor"s escape and the officers saw her this morning, compelling her to tell what she knew, which was sufllclcnt to make it certain that th murderer was In hiding at the "Wyatt home. Plans were the rtmade for Mont gomery's capture and the arrest of tii Wyatl home. Plans were tVu made f Monteomery's capture and the arrest or the "Wyat family, also the girl accompli..-. . Ian Who Would Have Things Straight Guthrie, O. T., May IS. Since the pub lication of the sanitarium report made by a government inspector, the Watonga Republican. Governor Ferguson's paper. in an editorial paragraph, "goes after" the alleged "knockers" who worked up the legislative investigation. Some of the paragraphs arc as follows: The "fellows" who secretly worked up the s anitarium agitation In the legis lature and at the same time openly claimed to be friends to the administra tion, will probably hear from it later on. The mills that grind slowly, grind surely. It may be, that the legislative inves tigation is not a closed Incident. It is possible that authority higher than Logan county may look into the affair- There is game in the brush if It can be located, and the indications now aTe that it can be done. During all of the time that the sani tarium agitation was on, this paper had but little to say, desiring to let the Ana nias knockers have "plenty of rope.' "Where are they today? "What do the peo ple think, of them? They are liats and the. people know it. Merrick was only a poor tool used by certain would-be politicians at Guthrie during the session of the last legislature. This matter will come up later. The fri3ky chaps who (supposing their tracks covered) worked it up and assisted will hear echoes of it in the future. Some time ago this paper offered a re ward of $1,050 for a letter from the in terior department officially authorizing Edgar Jones to take the legislative evi dence in the sanitarium to Washington. No one has claimed the reward up to date. The offer is still open. "Where is Merrick since the government inspector made his report? Some time ago Merrick said to a Kansas City Jour nal correspondent that the governor of the. territory had not requested the sec retary to send a man to investigate the sanitarium.
