glie ISiTcTtixa gaily g&xrle: JututTaij ;ptoramof, t0Ujemlrjer 8, 19 03 fifi J Receipts Light Which Were Expected on Saturday TOP PRICE WAS $4.85 This Is the Only Market to Protect Shippers Host receipts were light yesterday, but no surprise was expressed at this, because light receipts are the rule for Saturdays. The only car load of hogs sold was one that arrived late Friday night. The buy ers quoted the market at steady to strong and they were present to buy whatever came. The buyers left the yards early, but told the commission men that they would take all the hogs that arrived be twee nthat time and Monday morning at yesterday s prices, and at weights at time of arrival. A good many of the trains that bring hogs to this market come late in the night, and tills course has been adopted by ihe packing houses to protect the sipiers who patronize this market. It is probably the only hog market in this country in which shippers are thus pro tected against-a decline in the market axcer their hogs arrive. Hog Sales. Dock. Av. Wt. December wheat was offered quite freely at the start on large receipts in the northwest, and there were also good commission hous? salss of that commodity, which resulted in weak ness early in the day. Dwomiwr opened a shade to c lower at 7S:i'57S -c. and before the end of the flrst hour the price had dropped to 7S',ic. Toward the mid dle of the session a good genernl demand developed, and with outside markets showing some advance, and with pre dictions of urifavorable weather the mar ket assumed a brighter aspect, ar.d the early loss was all regained. Reports ot a small export business at the seaboard caused- further liquidation late in the day, and prices again eased off. The close was at the bottom with December prices lower at 7834c. Clearances of wheat and flour .were equal to 45190 bushels. Pri mary receipts were 1,308.300 bushels, against 1,614,400 bushels a year ago. Min neapolis and Du-uth reported receipts of 975 cars, which, with local receipts of 95 cars, two of contract, made the total receipts for the three points 1,070 cars, against 1.020 last week and 1,176 a year ago. Corn did not receive any particular support, and prices sagged. After sell ing between 44c and iihsc December closed c lower at 4444kc. Local re ceipts was 387 cars, with 17 of contract grade. Oats ruled a little lower along with wheat and corn, but local traders showed little disposition to take the selling side of the market. After ranging between 8rf7tj?sc and 3594c December closed at 3d $35c. a ioss 0f -ic. Local receipts were 279 cars. With the exception of lard, provisions ruled easier. There was some buying of lard at the start, but from the action of the other hog products it looked as" if lard was being supported in order to make a better market upon which to unload. There was scattered selling of pork by tired holders, and that commodity closed 15c lower at $11.90 for January option. January lard was 5c higher at S6.S0, but ribs were off 7ic at $6.20.. 6.22. Esti mated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, 130 cars; corn, 220 cars; oats, 215 cars; hogs 33,000 head. The leading futures ranged as follows: i Close I Qpeo.l High. Low. I T dayjYes dy Wheat! United States Steel preferred dipped to yesterday s low re cord immediately after the opening of the stock market today, but its easy recovery dealings, almost as light as on the de cline, made the drop not very impressive The relaxation of the recent severe pres sure on this stock realized the market to some extent, and prices were inclined to harden. The railroad list was but lit tle affected by the opening dip in steels preferred. The upward movement was extremely sluggish and doll and the mar ket showed little breadth or animation. Reports were in persistent circulation that the United States Steel corporation rUnnfd a cut in all grades of steel pro ducts on the basts of the lower price for biMct. but all attempts to secure official information were repelled. The bank statomeV.t was regarded as favorable on rccT'tint of the heavy loan contraction disclosed, although the rash dcrreaw was abo-it as large as had bee ncstimated. Th" decrease in deposits reduced th- re serve requirements so far that rather more than half of last week's surplus is eor,-er."d. The decrease in kan i at tributed in part to the liquidation in the sto. k market and to the repayments In cident to the completion of November 1 settlements. Some of the borrowings of last week incident to the crisis at St. Louis are rl. bflieved to have bn re paid. Tho money ami exchange markets are rather nominal on Saturday, but the tone of sterling was rppcrted weak, and derr.".nl bills were quoted at 4.M flat, wh.' h is within the margin f profl. in gold imports. None were announced, but ther- were variotia rumors of farther n gagrmentp. It was current rumor In the stock, also, that some of the sell ing was due to changes in the executivve department of the corporation at differ ent times since its formation. As a re sult of these suppositions there was a crop of rumors also, of further changes to come in the executive department and of friction and antagonism. Authorita tive Information on these points was not to be had, and the market improvements in the securities were left to surmise whether these rumors were not set afloat to confuse the public as to the causes in the Industrial situation to induco the selling. The influence of the operations of the bond conversion syndicate was also subject for consideration. Tho dif ference in the prices of the preferred stock and the bonds of steel was consid erably extended, and this measures the proflt to the syndicate for the process of conversion aside from the 4 per cent secureu previously. The Incident which was most effective in disturbing senti ment over the iron and steel trade condi tions was the cut in the price of steel billets of 34 per ton. Reports of large sales of steel products for foreign ac count were considered corrobative of the shrinkage of the domestic demand and the break in prices to secure the foreign market. Fears were felt of a general re duction of prices for all lines of steel products and a process of contraction throughout the state. Plans for further restriction of output, a decrease of the scale of wages and a large reduction in the force of laborers employed, helped to feed the apprehension of the specula tive public over the future In the indus trials of this class. Stocks of Indepen aent iron and steel companies were af fected in sympathy, though less activity than the United States Steel securities. There was resumption of the conserva tive attitude of banks and money lend ers, which had begun to be somewhat relaxated with the London delay in the crop moving demand for currency. This demand, though but little, was above the normal of the preceding years, warning the banking community that their pre parations for such a contingency were not mistaken. The heavy movement of cotton and tho high price at which the crop Is selling has increased the needed volume of currency to move it. Foreign money markets have made some show of opposition to the Xew York presattn for gold, the Bank of England s soiling pneo of gold having been advanced. But con fidence Is felt that any approach to strin gency in the Xew York money market would lead to prompt relief by gold ship ments as the international trade move ment his given Xew York a control oJ the situation. The week's events on tbe Isthmus of Panama have passed without apparent notice in the stock market In spite of the importance attached to the Panama canal project in its bearing on trans-continental freight traffic. Re ports of an adjustment in the relation between- Japan and Russia, in the far East have had some reflected effect from the London market. The tightness of the money market l-as reduced the demand for bonds and the recent average of bnslnesa in that de partment has been considerably dimin ished. The prices hav- yielded to de clines. United States 3s declined H from lat week's closing prices. Quotations were as follows: IHJght est eat. I ijowfClos est. ilpx.
