Jones, superintendent of the Rock Island, with headquarters at Tope Jca, and -H. T. McCa II, . trainmaster for that company at Herington, were passen gers on a freight train which passed through Wichita yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock from Caldwell to Hering ton. The officials were taking the trip by way of the freight train in order to take points on a test case of the hauling powers of the company's mammoth bat tleship 150Q locomotives. The train on which were Messrs. Jones and McCall consisted of cars loaded 'with 1,300 tons of freight. Thursday evening the twp officials pass ed through Wichita, enroute to Caldwell, in the special car of Mr. Jones, for the purpose of making this test. It is only one of more that will be made in the near future and cars containing 1,360 tons of "freight were attached to one of the 1503 locomotives for the first tesi'. Ordinarily these engines have been re quired to haul but from 1,030 to 1,200 tons of freight at a. time. It is believed, how ever, by the officials that the mammoth engines now in use by le company can haul several hundred more tons of freight to each load almost as easily as the amount which each is now drawing. When ,tests of this kind are made the train is equipped with a car known as a dynameter. This car is equipped with mechanism which shows the exact speed that is being maintained by a train. Loaded cars containing 1,350 tons of weight are equal to about 50 empty .cars. As one of these big engines often hauls 100 empty cars, it is argued that each lo comotive can haul just as much weight in less cars as each can haul in any num ber of empties which aggregate the same weight as the loaded ones. Several mere tests will b0 made and when it is shown that the locomotives make good time in carrying the addition al weight Wichitar.s will no doubt see some remarkably long freight trains pass through the city loaded with more freight than was ever Tiefore drawn through this part of the country by one engine. THE VALUE OF CHARCOAL. Few People Know How Useful It Is in Preserving Health and Bsauty. Xcarly everybody knows that charcoal is the saftest and most efllcient disin fectant and purifier in nature, but few realize its value when taken into tha human system for the same cleansing purpose. Charcoal is a remedy that the more you lake of it the better; it is not a drug at all. but simply absorbs the gases and impurities always present iu the stomach and intestines and carries them out of the system. Charcoal sweetens the breath after j smoking, drmkins, or after eating onions Charcoal effectually clears and improves the complexion, it whit-as the teeth and further acts as a natural and eminently safe cathartic. 'ONE WAN'S FAITH N CITY'S FUTURE W. G. Shambaugh Invests in Wichita Property. PAID $850 FOR TWO LOTS And Expects to Sell Them for S4,000. That Wichita property is considered to be a paying investment by outside capit alists, is shown by the fact that W. G. Shambaugh of Chicago, who recently bought two lots on East Douglas avenue as an investment for fS50, says that he will not sell them until he is offered ?2,000 for -each lot, and Mr. Shambaugh thinks that the time is not far distant when "he can sell them for that price. "Mr. Shambaugh is a traveling sales man with headquarters at Chicago, arid frequently comes to AVichita in the in terest of his company. It was while on one of these business trips that he in vestigated the prices of real estate, and after seeing the enormous amount ol business being done here he bought the lots. lie is so sanguine of Wichita's future success that to a letter of inquiry written by P. V. llealy, asking' v.-hat the lots could be bought for he replied that he would not sell them for less than 5.2.O0O, and that he would hold on to them until they brought that price. P. V. Healy says that while it does not seem probable that real estate will ad vance so much in the near future, but to a reporter for The Eagle he told the fol lowing story, which shows how rapidly Wichita has grown in the past and makes it seem probable that Mr. Shambaug's hopes will be realized in the near future. Ho says: "W. W. Black, who is now dead, came from Illinois to Wichita in 1S75 and pur chased four lots at the corner of Doug las and Topeka avenues for Si, COO. As he was leaving the real estate office the proprietor asked him what he would sell the four lots for. Mr. Black, after some hesitation said that when ho had an offer of 51G.0W for them he would sacl. The real estate man made fun of the proposition, as at that time It did not seem probable that the lots would ever bring half that amount. Eight years aft erward, however, Mr. Black was offered S20.00-5 for the lots and still refused tha offer." From this instance it can he plainly seen that Wichita is regarded very fa vorably by men who want to invest in real estate, and that they are confident that property will advance in price.
