feet of lumber per year. To supply theso
mills, the pino in tho Saginaw vnlley has
been nlrcady in groat pirt exhausted, nnd
mill owners are obliged to bring logs from
other rivers, ofton as far as 150 miles dis
tant, to supplcmont the stock of tho Sagi
naw river. The output on thnt river has
reached its climax. No moro now mills
nro built, or old ones replaced. The busi
ness must gradually diminish in volume
until the Saginaw valley, now tho greatest
lumber district in tho world, shall hear tho
buzz of tho saw no more."
Tho forests of Michigin, Wisconsin and
Minnesota contain tho chief supplies of pino
timber east of tbo Jlocky mountains. The
correspondent of tho Gazette endeavors to
answer tbo que&tiou : How long will these
supplies last ? Tnking tho Alpena district,
Michigan, as a guide in that state, it is be
