of preventing it by inoculation is Btipposcd

wns introduced in Constnntinoplo in 1G73,
nnd in England in 1717, on tho suggestion
of Lady Wortloy Montague. During tho
period of inoculation, there wcro in Eng
land, according to tho Professor, " 31 de

every tnrco yoars, nn miring mm. muo
there woro five sovcro epidemics." Of tho
philosophy of tho remedy, Professor Corn
field, snys : " I submit that that is n most
extraordinary fact that thoy should tnko

that tho world has evor scon, nnd inoculalo
pcoplo of all classes, up to tho royal famil
ies of Europo, with it. Now, what can
that mean ? Tlicro is no way of getting
"out of it oxcopt this, that tho disenso was
ho widely spread that, practically sponking,
tho wholo population was certain to tnko
it, and it shows it wns not worth whilo to
run tho chnnco of not getting it."
But nftor tho discovery of vaccinntion
tho inoculation of tho form of small-pox to
which cows aro subject a great chango
took plnco. Dr. .Tenner found that persons
who nnd been vnccinnted would not tnko
tho small-pox, ovon when inoculated with
tho poison. In timo inoculntion with
nmnll pox was prohibited in England.
Vaccination was nfterwnrds mado gratui
tous, and sinco 1853, compulsory. Profes
sor Cornfield stntos tho result in this way :

for ninny years Resident Physician in
the Small-pox Hospital of London, says

attacked.

ures." In Baron's life of Jonnor still nioro con
clusive proof of tho benefits of vaccination
nto given, thus: "From tho year 17G2
to 1792 tho nmnbor of porsons that died of
emall-pox in tho Danish dominions amount
ed to 9,828. About tho year 1802 vnccin
ntion wns introduced, nnd tho practico bo
enmo ironoral. but not univorsnl ; howorcr,
58 porsons ouly diod of tho smnll-pox in tho
yoar 1810. Vaccination, by tho command
of tho King, wns now universally ndoptcd,
nnd smnll-pox inoculation prohibited, nnd
from tho year 1810 to tho yoar 1819, not a
single caso of smnll-pox occurrod."

Proofs of theso facts aro abundant. As
nn oxamplo of tho povvor of rovnccinalion,
in tho Uavarian army, from 1813 to 1857,
thoro wns not a hitiglo enso of unmodified
bmnll-pox, nor a single death from BtnalL
pox. Mr. Marson of tho Loudou Hospital
stntos that iu nu cxperionco of thirty-six
years ho has novcr had n caso of a nurso
having small-pox, becauso ho revacciuatoU
nil within tlireo days of their nrrivnl. Hut
nil vaccinations aro not perfect. To bo a
Iruo vaccination thoro must bo pita when)
tho bear wns made. A calculation ruuuing
over twenty.fivo years shows that from 21
to 22 por cont of vaccinated persons show
ing uo marks died ; whilo of thoso haviug
ono murk only 7 J per ccut; ot thoso Hav
ing two marks o little over 4 per ccut ;

lcs than 1 per cout. Medical opinion is
that vaccination dod uot cotnmunicato oth
er disoaM. Dr. Fcrgutou.Bya; "Vac
cination docs not communicato othor dis
eases. Mr, Marson has vaccinated 50,000
times and has never known of such com
munication. Sir William Jenncr, Sir Jag.
Paget and Dr. West of tho Children's Hos
pital, Orniond street, London, nil testify to

caio from whom to draw conclusions."
Dr. Aitken says : " It isthus clearly do
monslrated how vaccination has thrown
tho regfa of protection over tho world, and
how nmplc, how grcnt and how clllcient
that protection may be. It has been shown
to diminish mortality generally, and tho
mortality from small-pox in particular, both
in civil nnd military life, nt homo nnd
nbroid, nnd in just proportion ns it is cflici
enlly tterformed."
