Reminiscences of Nnpolcon nt St. Helena.
Tho ifl.tml being strongly fortified, with
ft garrison of two Treimeiit!!, nml ve'scts of
wnr constAiitly cruising nnxindit, Sir HmU
on Iiowo should hnvc been convinced thnt
his prisoner .n8 jcrfcctly snfo j lint so fnr
from this, it is related of him thnt
on ono occasion, becauso iS'npolcon hnd
not been seen for thirty-six hours by nn
English officer, ho ordorrd his nid in tho
tniddlo of tho night to rido over to Long
wood, a dUtnnco of nenrly fivo miles, nnd
Ascertain if ho wns there. Whon tbo nid
returned, reporting tlmt he had been tin
nblo to sec Napoleon, ho wns immediately
ordered to Longwood, with onlcrs to re
main tlicro tiutil be had seen him. Tho
poor aid informed Count Uortrand of tho
nature of his instructions, who posted him
behind a tree fronting the window of tho
chamber in which Xapoleon happened to
bo, nnd after remniniog there several hours
he caught a glimpso of him through tho
window, much to tho relief of tho nid and
Sir Hudson Lowe.
I also heard another story equally as ri
diculous of this Governor. It appears that
during hit time there was n number of Chi
nese cooltes cmployetl as gardeners, nnd ho
noticed among tiiem ono who resembled
Napoleon so much that he nctually hnd
him sent off the island, thinking that ho
might bo used to facilitato tho escape of
his captive. Mr Carrol, now in his soventy
sixth year, who was born on tho island, and
had at ono period occupied tho position of
United States Consul, informed mo that
Kapolcon wns much averso to tho visits of
strangers when prompted by curiosity, but
when impelled by other motives an inter
view was rarely refused, unless prevented
by iudisposition. Ho had to a great degreo
the happy faculty of making a good im
pression upon all who celled to see him,
bis manners being of tho most charming
character. Mr. Carrol, who had frequently
seen Napoleon, descirbed him as being
rather short, with n well-proportioned head
nnd finely-cut features; his eyes were gray
nnd of tho most cxprcssivo character; his
bands and feet small nnd delicately formed,
of which ho seemed to bo rather vain ; in
fact, be always raid great atloution to his
personal appearance.
Among other anecdotes related by Mr.
Carrol of Napoleon, ho mentioned that Sir
Georgo Cockburn, who vra thon in favor
with him, brought two ladies to Longwood
to introduce him, nnd so certain was ho of
having this honor granted that bo had omit
ted sendiug word to Count Bcrtrand, which
was always customary. On tho arrival of
the company they were informed by Count
Bcrtrand that Napoleon was not well
enough to sco viwtors, which was a great
disappointment, not only to Sir George,
but to the ladies. IJertraud, however, man
aged to draw Sir Georgo out of tho house,
nnd engaged him in conrersatipn, when
Napoleon entered tbo room where tho la
dies were, to whom ho introduced himself,
and by his winning maimers and charming
conversation soon gained their esteem and
admiration. Ho also had refreshments
brought in, of which thoy partook, Na
poleon then retired, and shortly afterward
Sir Georgo rejoined his prty, and hud not
. been awnro that tbey had thus been honor
ed during his abfoncc, until ouo of tho la
die happened to mention that Napoleon
had treated them in tho most courteous
manner, which annoyed Sir Georgo no lit
tle. Tbo object of Napoleon in resorting
to thu artiGco was to show that, notwith
standing that ho was a captive, ho was just
s exacting in points of etiquette as when
he was Kmperor of France.
To children he was alwas partial, speak
ing pleasantly to them, and frequently ho
would take a" soldier by tho ear in a playful
manner, ddrosung turn kindly. .Mr. larvol
alto relates that on ono occasion Napoleon,
with his suiio galloped through the llntuh
camp on Ddadwood, when tbo soldiers in.
Tolunurily, and without orders, fell in tho
ranks and saluted him. Untied &rvice
William Thompson, the once fsmons
Maori chief, adopted a shrewd method of
deciding which of bis two sons should sue
cecd him. A tbrj stood before him as be
lay sick unto destb, he suddenly addressed
bimwlfto tho elder, saying Sbortland,
take down that gun and shoot the white
xsan standing outside the but. " The youth
wst about to obey the order readily enough,
when bis brother intervened with : "Why
should you kill the man? What harm has
be dune unto us?" Then said the old chief:
"Ym, that is right. You have what ia
wacted saose and discretion. You will
take my place when I nnf gone." And so
the succession was settltd.
Mr, Sala says that n blind mnn m,ight
tell the different denominations of Russian
notes by aiing bis nose to determine the
taloe; the rule being, the lower the value
the " louder" the smell. A hundred.rouble
note will be redolent of patchouli, jockey,
club, or some equally fashionable perfume;
while tho single-rouble bote usually reeks
of tallow or coirso tobacco.

Captain Rosen has no doubt of its authen

JuneruUl has received orders to remain
at these islands fur nine months, and the

We understand that Captain Kemp, of the
Quivn, feels sure that the savage will pay
verr little attention to any demand made
by her Majesty's ships, as experience tcacbci
them that they have nothing to fear be
yond the rtoe of a few pigs, or the loss or
habitations to which tbey attach little or
no value. Ho further states that the natives
havo becomumott impertinent, and declare
tho practice of skull. bunting to bo a safe
aud profitable game, to loug as thoy prac
tice it on the white men; but when they
try it od neighboring,, tribes tbey have to
light for it. lie belief M that if tbe traders
were allowed to take the law into their own
