Descent of the Punchbowl.
Wt lilt ii Jor Iht Snlurilntj I'rmt.
'Twas ten o'clock duo pleasant night.
And tho sllv'ry moon stud forth its light,
When wc left tho l'lmchbowl's rocky brow
To reach Its Imso soinewhorc, somehow,
Ami with caro wo choso tho soninuhat trail,
As wo supposed ; but to our tnln :

To drop nnd slido

With shaking joints.
So swiftly wu went

Thnt to stop wo wouldn't,
And in fnct wo couldn't.
No time for aching limbs to rest
An on our downward wny wo prest.
I'lidltig, blowing, nnd no wonder ;
On wo boomed like rolling thunder. ,

With no thought of stopping,
Htil downward wo'ro plunging, t '

Of a nmldini wo rtqiiut

And less sintering pains.
Thus downward wo go

And with ninny n slip, nnd with many a roll,
From tho ilgo tn tho baso of tho ruggtd Punch

At tho bottom and "stoi
Short, never to go again."

of America aro noted for mixed drinks.
Water is tho gro.vt drink of tho majority
of tho human r.ieo. 'Water with n bit of

for tho groat, common plain peoplo, the

Bitnplo water is tho only daily drink.
" Vht would mankind do without water?

Temperance in the West.
One of tho most notable occurrences of
the tart hnlf decnilo, and one which must
attract Mroiigly tho regard and interest of
every student of political nnd social science,
is the ninnncr in winch tho tompornnco is
mio Iiih furred itself into protuinenco in tho
West. In Kansas it has laid hold on n
parly nnd tho Stntn. It is to-day tho most
prominent nnd forceful issuo in .Nebraska
legislation, and will hooti becomo the
domiuutit factor in Iown politics. In this
lattor Stale, especially, is their conrso to
wonder nt tho suddon and irrcsistihlo forco
with which this tompcrnnco Ecntimcnt has
hid hold upon State politics. Tlio leading
politicians of Iown fully npprcciato tho im
minence nnd importance of this ihsuo,
which will soon wjuaroly confront thoin ;
ami tho newspapers of tho State nro already
deep in its discussion.
Something of tho same kind might ho
sv'd of Iho South, in some pirts of which
tho ecnsiblo peoplo nro nwako to tho im
portance of having their rights secured, in
part at least, by law. It is high timo that
overy Stnto in tho Union was employing
all its power, moral nnd legal, roligious and
civil, to stay tho sale of intoxicating li
quors. Tlio Now York Herald says editor
ially: "Tho toinperanco question, in what
ever light regarded, is ono of tho most in
teresting and importnnt of tho tnnny
problems of tho day. During tho last eight
or ton days our columns havo teemed with
interviews, nddrcsfccs nud correspondence
on tho subject."
If such testimony comes from tho secu
lar press, what should bo tho action of tho
roligious press, the pulpit, tho church, nud
society nt Inrgc? Thero is no question
which moro deeply concerns tho temporal
nnd religious iutorests of this country.

Discoveries in Ancient Mexico.
M. LcsiroOhnrnoy, who recently returned
from tho Franco-Lorillnrd expedition in ex
ploring in Mexico nnd Coutral America,
has brought nwny photographs and papor
imptessions of inscriptions and bas-reliefs
which ho declares ho would not tnko thirty
thousand dollars for. Unfavorable wonthor
and tho desertion of the Mexican Indians
ho had employed, forced his return much
boouer than ho originally intended, but ho
proposes to return to Moxico next October.
Ho doscribes n ruined Tolteo city near Ta
basco, on tlio Mexican Gulf coast. IIo bo
lioves it was founded between 1150 nud
HUO, and was in a porfect state of pre
servation when Cortez invaded Jloxico.
Tho hills wero covered with temples,
pyramids nnd palaces. Tho largost of tho
pyramids is 500 feet in height, nnd a boc
ond is fully 300. Nature has had moro to
do with llieso monuments than art, ns the
builders had merely hbaped tho hillocks
into pyramidal form, and nftorward faced
them with i-tono ; nnd stops wero nlso cut
in tho hidos, paved with a mixtuio of ce
ment nud pebbles. IIo learned that in nn
ciont Spanish records statements wero to
bo found that this city was uot destroyed
until nftor Vera Cruz wan laid out. At
Palonijuo ho procured many valuable im
pressions nnd tracings, and in tho wny of
discovory located tbo ancient cities of Tula,
Niolihucicau and Comalcalco. In tho
conrso of his travels ho nlso camo across
two hitherto unknown comotcrios, nnd pro
cured much interesting nnd vnlnablo data
from tho inscriptions thoio discovered. A
largo number of photographs of mural de
signs, upward of a hundred paper pressings
of bas-rcliofs, and many impressions of tho
hieroglyphics on tho mouldering temples,
palacos 'aud monuments, wero also hoourod.
The "Corwin" and her Arctic Cruiso.
Tho Secretary of tho Treasury has trans
mitted the ordors which aro to govorn tho
action of Captain Uoopor on tho Ttomas
Corwin, in his approaching cruiso to tho
Arctic, to San Francisco. Tho
Conalti is to sail within n few days. Tho
instructions irivon her ablo nnd gallant
commander are, liko thoso under which ho
cruised last summer, most liberal and
clastic. Nominally tho Corwin goos to tho
Arctio to provont frauds on tho revenue;
practically sho goes to discovor tho whoro
nbouts of tho ,aunnette, and, if pobhiblo, of
tho Mount rulltiMon nnd tho TTrinn, to
rescue thoir crows nnd to bring thotn homo
nguu. It is with this viow that Secretary
W'indom confers upon tho commnudur
such discretionary aud personal power. It
is for this that tho Corwin has bcon
strengthened nnd improvod within nnd
without and furnished with double supplies
of everything usually found in ships' htoros.
Sho is in perfect condition, and is, in fact,
much bottur Htted to battlo with tho ico
than tho costly J!od'jer.i (nee tho Mart
antlJlelm). Tho Corujiii's crow nro picked
mon, and most of them havo served on
similar expeditious. Her commander,
Charles L. Uoopor, a young, experienced
and skilled mariner, possesses tho confi
deuce of tho Treasury Department to nn
unlimited extent. Ho achieved moro in
that icy region last summer than nny pro
decossor. Ho is instructed this yoar to sail
for Hearing Straits, aud will stop cm tho
wny at tho htatious on coast aud islands,
and thonco into tho Arctic. Ho is to ubo
ovory means iu his power to find tho mis
bing vcsols, nud in this attompt is to bo
guided ouly by his own judgment. It is
believed that he will fiud them, if they nro
to bo found. Tho race between tho Coruin
and tho Jloders ou this errand of mercy
will bo nn exciting ouo. Captain Hooper
beliovoa the whalers will nover bo seen
again.
