Reminiscences of Honolulu. No 8.
Tbo thirljr-first of Jiilyvrns formerly the
Hawaiian lioliilny most imircrsally and
thoroughly observed, as will bercraombered
by those familiar with our Island history, for
on that clay, in tho year 18-13, tho national
Hag, which had been lowered by Lord
Georgo Pntilet in H.U.M.'s.S. Caritfurt,
watt rc-hoisted by Admiral Thomas in the
Jhiblin. King Knnikcaouli and his chiefs
and jcoplo wcro ovcrjoyctl at tho recovery
or their nntional sovcruignty, nnd "lleslorn
tion Day," was nt oneo placcil at the head
of national holidayo. Its obsorranco ni
such was continued until during tho reign
cf Knmohameha V. when it wns dropped,
for tho reason, it wns believed, that it wai
an unpleasant rcmiodcr of an net of in.
'justice dono by a DriliMi officer, nnd there
fore rcpognnnt to tho principal iliimter of
tho Crown at that time, who wns a Scotch
rann. Hut in the days of Kauikcaouli " tho
good," tho day was kept with grwt dis
play, for those times.
Tho most noteworthy celebration of
n holiday in my "recollections of
Honolulu, occurred on tho 31st of
July, 1847, being tho fourth auni
vcrsnry of llcsloralion Day. Trepira
tions had been going on for a week nnd
materials collected forn graud Amu feast at
tho King's country residence in Nunnnu
valley, a few miles this sido of tho Pali.
Tho native began to go np tbo valley in
crowds nt early dawn. At 8 o'clock a'gun
from the fort was tho signal for tho dis
play of bunting all over tho town nnd from
tho shipping in port. At 10 o'clock tho
Royal pirty, consisting of tbo King and
Queen Kalaraa, with Keoni Aua tho
Premier and wife, left tho I'alaco for Xuu
anu ralloy in tho " Stato carriage. " This
was a ponderous nflair, of au ancient stylo
even thirty odd years ago. It had been n
present from Queen Victoria to Queen
Pomaro of Tahiti, and by tho latter sold
to tho King of Hawaii when sho got into
trouble with tho French in 18 10. On tho
present occasion it wns drawn by four iron-
grey uones, tue unver nnu postillions m
livery, and made n grand appearance
First in tho procession carao throo hundred
infantry; officers on horseback with tho
Uoyal standard and tho Grand Marshals,
Henry Sea, J. It. Jasper and William Jar
rclt, immediately preceded tho Stato car
riago; following this wcro tho Cabinet
Ministers and tbo chiefs on horseback ;
next camo ono thousand horso-women, ftvo
abreast, dressed pretty much alike, wear
ing palm-lcnf hats and Spanish ponchoF,
gay with ribbons and wraiths of flowers;
then two thousand fivo hundred horec-men.
As the procession crossed Ilcrctania street
on Nuuanu, Royal salutes wero Grcd from
tho fort and tho King's yacht, tho Kami
vthatha Iff. Tho Royal party reached
the picnic groutidi at about 11 o'clock in a
pouring rain; in fact, trained in occasional
howcri tbroughonttho day, and tho mud
on the valley road was deep and qnito
liquid from tlio tramping of thousands of
hortus, but no ono cared for rain or mud.
A man stationed nt tho first bridge fur tho
express purpose, counted 4,000 horses go
ing up tho valley and 4,000 returning
visitors from Koolau making the difleronto
in nunjbers.
There was an tmmenso concourco of peo
ple assembled in tho grounds it must bo
remembered that tho native population was
much more numerous tucn tuau now and
tho sceno was a lively and picturesque one.
Two long laiiai, or open-sided ti-lvaf
structure, thickly floored with rushes, and
numerous rustic booth accommoditcd the
native crowds, dressed in their holiday oL
tir, while tbo foreign ladies nnd gentlemen
wero enlcrlaiued in a wooden house. Be
fore dinner, which was set for 2 P.M., the
guest were entertained with somo of tho
ancient nativo games a sham fijjht with
spears; the lua, the art of jiootug men
and of breaking their bones, as was prac
ticed in old savage war times, and the ha.
Lcko, or wrestling match. In tho spear
exercise tbo most expert performer was
John Ii, then one of tho King's counsellors
and tho year following appointed a Judgo
of the Sutierior Court, lie was tall, clean
limbed, and cxcediogly lithe in all his
movements, and it nm a rare sight when ho
toed alone, uuatincd, opposed lo twenty
IrWrsmen ech of whom endeavored to
hit Uim. PexUrously catching tho first
spear that was durtcd, with this ho suc
cessfully parried nil tho rest, tint ecmod
to come in a crowd and were aimed with
furious force at all part of his person.
Aud t?Uca t!e jntsiile or hi assailant had
been all exhausted, he in turn picked up
their spear aud rapidly darted tbeta back
at hi opponents, driving them from the
fiild, aw id the wild applause of the native
spectators. The lua or bone breaking

tho nsscmblngo went vigorously to work on

llcef, jiOrk, flhh nnd poi, tho staples woro
in profusion (with n mispicioii of dog.) A
memorandum, obtained from St. John tho
steward, will givo an idea of the provisions
at iIu'r King's feast : -71 hogs; -132 large
calabashes of poi; GO- thickens; H wholo
oxen; 2 barrelo snll pork; 2 barrels biscuit;
11,125 salt fish; l.B-'O fresh fish; 12 barrels
luau nnd cabbage; 4 barrels unions; 80
bunches bananas; 5B pino apples; 10 barrels
potatoes; 55 ducks; 82 turkeys, 2,245 comm
unis; 4,000 heads of taro; ISO squid;
oranges, limes, grapes and various fruits.
Altogether it was estimated that enough
wns provided to feast 12,000 pcrsous, nnd
that 10,000 wcro nctually present.
Whilo tho feast was going on, several
old women in tho immedinto neighborhood
of where tho Kiug eat, kept up a constant,
uhnuting of mtla nntho poems in his
honor nnd that of his ancestors, nccom
pinying tho chant with gyrations nnd mo
tions of tho arms. And in tho ovening,
nfler tho most of tho compiny had de
parted, a company of hula girls gavo a
"concert" with their attendant drum nnd
calabash beaters.
Tho King and most of tho guests re
turned to town beforo sundown, somewhat
in tho snmo order ns on going out. During
tho cntiro day I did not observe tho slight
est disorder and no signs of drunkenness
among tho natives. Tho same could not
bo snid in theso days nt tho conclusion of n
public holiday. The fact is, that tho law
prohibiting tho selling or furnishing of in
toxicating drinks to natives was not n dead
letter thirty years ago, ns it virtually
is now.
In tho ovening thero wero roligious
services at Knwainhno Church, which was
filled to overflowing, the King nnd Queen
bciug present. A sermon npropos of tho
occasion, was preached by tho pistor, tho
llov. Richard Armstrong (subsequently
Minister of Public Instruction), tho text
being taken from Psalms 37. 3 "Trust in
tho Lord and do good ; so shnlt thou dwell
in the land, nnd verily thou shalt bo fed. "
There could havo been no question but that
his hoarers had been fed on that day.
King Kauikcaouli "the good" and Queen
Kalama wero n handsomo couplo nnd do
scrvedly popular with nil clnsses. Ho was
at that time thirty-threo years of age, nnd
should havo been just in tho full vigor of
manhood ; hut tho excesses of youth had
nlready begun to tell upon his naturally
strong constitution. Stoutly built, about
5 feet 8 inches in height, darker com
plcxioncd thin most llnwaiiaus, his strongly
marked features wcro nlways boamiog
with kiudncss and good humor. Kalama
nged 23 was n decidedly attractivo looking
woman, tall, well-formed, light com
plexioncd enough for a half-while, bnt with
thoroughly nativo Hawaiian features nnd
largo gazcllo-liko eyes. And sho wns as
amiablo ns eIio was good looking.

Negroes in tho Orient.
In bis letter to tho Southern Workman
W. X. Armstrong speaks of Negroes occu
pying prominent positions in tho Orient.
Ono of these, S. A. Duller, is n resident of
Shanghai. His psrents wcro of pure Afri
can blood nnd his father was a preacher in
tho City of Washington. Ho loarncd
French, Italian, German and Spanish, nud
when Durlicgamo was nppointcd Minister
to China ho mot Butler in Paris and made
him his private secretary, nnd ho went to
i'ekin nnd Boon learned to speak Chinese
Ho afterward left tho crabissy and went
into tho employ of an American commer
cial company, aud liter wont into tho serv
ice of tho Shanghii Navigation Company.
Tho Chineso in this company had employed
whites bat they took advatitago of tho em
ployers nnd it wns not . until Butler
was engaged by them and placed in
chargo of ono of the most import
ant departments, that they begin to real
izo nnylhiug. He systematized tho busi
ness, brought everything into perfect order
and enforced discipline. This compiny
now owns thirty-six steamers which they
aro running nt n handsomo profit. Wo
havo nlratdy had two of thorn tho Ho
Chunij and Jfee Iroo iu our waters.
They havo monopolized the greater part of
iho homo coast trade and aro now turning
their nttentiun to foreign conquests in the
commercial world. Tho Chinese regard
Butler as n very oblo man and havo im
plicit confidence in bis honesty.
Several weeks after meeting Butler,
when Mr. Armstrong, with King Kala
knua, was on tho royal yacht of the King
of Siam on tho river Menam, on their way
to Bangkok, the yacht stopped nt (ho cus
tom houto to tako on board somo officials.
Ho u at iced a negro in tbo stern of tho
boat and inquired about him. A merchant
said to him in answer to ins inquiry : "Ho
is at tho head of tho custom 1ioum on tho
river. It is a very mpoiuible placo. This
negro is a man of considerable education,
in honost, nnd capable, so ho was nppointcd
to tho place, and dischargtB tho duties
well."
