THis was accomplished nnd thovcssol nr rivod nt Honolulu ngnin on tho 11th of April. Ono of tho pnssongers, Mr. T. H. Christmas Island lies" in North latitude 1.58, and West longitude 157.32. It was discovorod and described by Cooko, on his second voyage to tho Pncific. In shape something like a horseshoo, it is ono of those coral "atolls," or lagoon islands, "which abound in tho Wostorn part of this ocean, and which nro so dangerous to nnv igators, lying ns thoy do, almost on a lovsl with the son. Saturday VOLLFME IT., NO. 14.1 HONOLULU, II. ham Islnnd, in this ocean, by a Bingnlnr nnd perilous ndventure, in tho month of Jnnunry. The Captain wont on shore nt Mm islnnd to purchnso somo mticles from a Portiiutiest) who was liviinr thero 111110111 tlio natives, who were a savage arid war like sot. llnving concluded his business, tho Captain nntl boalscrow returned to tho bonch just before dnrk, only to find t lint tho natives had leniovod tho oars, and on being requested refused to give them up. After some parley, they suc ceeded in getting the oars, but had to fight their wny to the bont through n crowd of two or threo hundred natives. 11 being dink, however, and tho tide low, they were compelled to land ngnin, when tho oars were ngnin taken and tliuCnptain and boathcrew placed under guard. The next morning, tho Poituguese, who was tho only foreigner living on flio Island, accompanied by n dozen or more nntives, embarked in tho boat and went off for the ptnposo, as it nftenvnrds appeared, of taking the ship, Tho next lay thoy ro turned jwHli tjvp boats and a lot of.nrticlos from ilioslii'p, wliicli, they informed Capt. Spencer, thoy had tnken, nnd killed nil hands. The boat's crow wero then mnrched off. Tho Cnptnin making hojuo resistance, wns picked up nnd carried bodily to a small islnnd a short distance from tho shore, where he was surrounded by n cordon of nntives, armed with knives, spears and clubs. One wns ap pointed to tho oflico of executioner nnd was nbout to strike tho fntal blow, when n young nud hundsonio chief woinun n veritablo Pocahontas sprang forward nnd interposing, rescued the Cnptnin. A consultation ensued nuiong tho natives, and after some magic words of incanta tion had boon pronounced, Captain Spencer wns libornted, the nnmo of Uogio was given him, nnd ho was declared taboo. Tho heroine took him under her especial care nnd guardianship. But tho position of the Captain and tho boat's crow on shore was anything but comfortable, for their ship had disappeared, and thoy wero uncertain of tho fato of those on board. Two days after their cnptnru a sail was seen in the oiling, but an attempt to roach her failed. After tho lapse of twolvo days residenco among these snvngo islanders, Cnptnin Spencer nnd his men wero tnken off by n whaleshin that hnnnened tn tnneli at Sydenham Island nnd uventually wero brought to Honolulu as I have stated. Tho story which afterwords transpired of what occurred on lward tho Triton -whon tho Portuguese nnd tho nntivca went off to take her, has a touch of romance in it. It seems that Manuel, tho Portuguese, wont on board and informed tho first officer that Captain Sponcor wished for somo empty casks to bo sent on shore for tho purpose of bringing off tho articles ho had pur chased. Thoro not being timo to got tho casks ready that day, Mnnuol and his natives remained on board over night. At 10 o'clock that night thoy roso on tho ship's company, killed tho man nt tho wheel nnd another, and badly wounded tho mnto nnd several others. Mnnuol did tho shooting, nnd tho mnto, having noth ing to defond himself with, fan nnd jumped into the hold. Whilo tho cooper was lying on tho deck, mortally wounded, and Mnnuol wns cutting him up in a shocking manner, ono of tho mntes pinned the wretch to tho deck with a whnlo lanco. Although their leader wns dead, tho nn tives succeeded in gotting possession of tho vessel, tho two mntes nnd most of tho crow gotting off in ono of tho ship's bonts. Tho nntives proceeded to plunder tho ship, having put a native at tho wheel to run hor on bhore. This man, though a nntivo of the island, belonged to tho ship, and his subsequent conduct shows him to havo been a horo. Instead of stooring for tho shore; whilo tho others wero busily engngod in ransacking for plundor, ho managed to run tho ship oft land. But whon this was discovered ho wns attacked and compelled to run into tho rigging for his lifo. Whilo thoro a bright thought struck him nnd ho shouted "sail ho 1" so lustily that tho natives took fright and all i' limped overboard nnd swam for tho Hhoro. Jeing now in full possession of tho ship, this hero of a South Sea Islander de scended from tho rigging nnd taking tho holm boro down for tho bonts, nnd tho crow got on board. Tho Triton subse quently turned up tall right in chargo of tho first oflicor. The Legislative Assembly for 1818 mot on tho 27th of April, nnd tho session wns formally opened liy the King in person.
