Soon after my arrival 1 wiu emjiloyed
by Uuckelew on tho Utilfrnitin, unit tnrvo
weeks thereafter ho turned tho vholo
concern over to mo- in fact, I becamo tho
proprietor, for tho consideration of $1,500
im jxijxr. Tho terms however, weiu ouy,
mid it gold had not unfortunately boon
discovered, whereby oorything was re
volutionized, I might havo done fairly in
time. Everybody oven then, had groat
expectations of tlio grand future that Atras
in store for California. Although (ho
Mexicnu war was not yet concluded, it
was not doubted for a moment that tho
IJnitud States would retain tho counia-y.
The magnificent bay and harbor of Jinn
Frunoibco, and the beautiful ami fiutile
viillien of tlm Sacramento, tlio San Joa
quin and Sim Jaio, it was felt, could uovor
l) again givon over to tho indolent Span
inh Indian rimcheros, but must forever rtw
luaiu in the hands of Uncle Stun, who
know how to dowlopo tho dormant agri
cultural resources of this naturally rich
country. And so indeed it has eventually
proved, for California hna liocomo a great
lood-p"roilucing State after nn iulliction
of many yours of " gold fovor. "
I well remombor tlio first intimation woof
Sun Francisco had of tho finding of gold.
Two men who had arrived on a boat from
Sutter's Fort ,on tho American Itiver,
cmuaiuto Uuckolow'sBhop, and untying a
small buckskin package, displayed nlwut
li half teacup full of binning yellow
grniiw, nnd roquostod liuckelow to trj it
with hi " wutohmnker's stun'," and tell
them v lint it really wus. Aftor repoatwl
ly to&ting with acid, ho declared it to bj
puro gold. Tho mou declined to bay
whoit) thoy had found it, and went uwny.
Tho story was soon kuown in tho vilhigo
and tho men wero plied with questions,
but thoy were very reticent, until ovoning,
when uuder tho intluonce of City Hotel
whi&koy thoy thawed huftlciently to Jet
out tho tact (hut tho gold had 1mxii found
in tho bottom of tho mill-race on tho
uourso of tho American Itiver, which was
Saturday

beiinr dttir by Cnnt. Sutler. The water
from tho river hml been run through tho
ruue ill. infill, iiiKi wiieu n was sum oil
and had run out in the morning, then)
wero tho bright yellow pnrticlen of gold
"ihtst" on the bottom.
Tho result in tho town was, that every
body becamo excited. Nothing could bo
talked of but gold nnd gold-iuiiies. Somo
few protended to be skeptical, and much
Migo advise was freely given to those who
wero mnking immediate preparations to
go to the diggings, about "wild gooso
llllftLliu " (Millll.tf lUflll Iil1nllr.il nl.l.in " ..in
but in the end, almost every able bodied
man in the town did go. And this Inst
fact was the immediate cause of my own
going. Threo weeks after the discovery
of gold was publicly made kndwn. I was
roinncUod to discontinue, tho publication
of " The Californinn," nnd announced tho
fact, giving my reasons therefor -tho
want of readers boing the principal one -in
an extra slip. This I set up, printed,
nnd rarried about town myelf, for mv
printer, roller-boy and carrier had all
gono to tho mines. And in carrying my
extra about town I found but few except
women nnd Indians to take it, and tho
latter could not rend it. So, Othello's oc
cupation being gone, I provided myself
with n pickaxe, tin pan, (for washing tho
soil for gold) nnd a fuw necessaries,
among which were n bag of Hour and
some, dried beef, and took passage on a
launch for tho " Einbarcaaoro,'," on tho
Sacramento Itiver. This was a point a
short distnnco from tho junction of the
American River with tho former, wheru
boats rendezvoused with freight and pas
sengers for Sutter's Foit nnd tho diggings,
nnd it is now a pnrt of tho great city of
Saernmonto. At thn timo of my arrival
thero were no houses on tho spot, only n
" remadn," as tho Spanish termed it, a sort
of immenso booth thatched with leaves,
under which froight wns stored and trav
ellers "camped down." Thore wero a
goodly number of theso who spread their
blaukctH under the numerous largo oak
nnd othor trees of the vicinity, while a
few had been thoughtful enough to pro
vido themholvcH with tents. Thero was,
of courso, a drinking booth, whero spirits
were retailed at 50 cents a glnss the
price subsequently rose to one dollar, and
then to n " pinch " of gold dnst, which
often wns equivalent to threo or four
dollars, if tho pincher had a big thumb
and finger.
Tho diggings woro as yet (in Juno) con
lined to tlio South Fork of tho Americnn
Itiver, isomo ten or twelve miles above tlio
Fort, at a place which was named "Alor
mon Island," from tho fnct that n com
pany of those peoplo from San Francisco,
under tho lendorship of Sam lSrnnnnu,
composed tho mnjonty of diggers. For
this plnco I proceeded, sending my bag
gago along by an ox team, which charged
at tho rate of 12 a ton froight. Wo call
ed in at tho Fort on our way. It pre
sented n busy scone, threo sides occupied
with stores in which Ilrannnn and others
wen) busy in selling outfits to miners and
weighing gold dust in exchange for goods.
Coin of courso wns rare, and tho gold was
taken at from nino to fourtoen dollars per
ounco, it being really worth at tlio mint
twnutv-one. I met Cant. SUtter (some
how ho nVtorwaraw KOt to l. railed Gon
eral probably through tho American
fashion of indiscriminately bestowing
titles,) and took dinner with the old Cali
fornia pioneer and thorough gontloman,
in his residenco in tho Fort, This struc
ture reminded mo much of tho old Fort at
Honolulu, its 20 feet high walls enclosing
a square, tliougn clillering from tho former
in being built of mud (atiobies) instead of
coral. Tho idea was originally a defono
against the Indians, hut a more nppnront
ly harmless, puny race could scarcely bo
found than this, tho lcpresoutntivos of
which, male and female, swarmed in nnd
about Sutter's Fort, and wero dependents
on the proprietor.
Ai rived at Alormon Islnnd, whoro wo
found a scattered camp of several hun
dred mon, washing tho bars and banks of
tho stream, mybelf and two friends Jacob
D. Hoppo and Stephen Harris, both long
hinco deceased pitchod our tent and went
to housekeeping, llright and early next
morning (tho mornings uerc bright in tho
interior of California in Juno) wo wont
down the steep batik of tho river, and each
bolectiug what wo thought might bo n
favorable iot, began our oxperionco as
gold diggers. So much has been written
and printed nbout tho stylo and manner
of life among tho early California seekers
after tho precious metal, that I deem it
hardly worth while to lxn-o nly readers
with a detailed account of my adventures,
or of tho scenes, sometimes alarming and
homotimes amusing, through which I
passed. At tho Aloimou Island diggings,
either my unskillfulness or my bad luck
was tho cause ill-biiccess, for while men
that woro no more industrious than mv
belf wero cleaning un at tho rate cf six
ounces ovoiy day, and within a few feet of
mo, I found, at tho end of a fortnight,
that about ono hundred nnd fifty dollars
worth of dust wns all I had realuod. Ono
might summso, under ordinary circum
stances, that earning and getting at the
rate of $1100 per month over expenses was
very good pay, and ought to have been
stuck to; but tho mischief was that others
all around mo were doing a great deal
better, and thus I wns an illustration of tho
postulate, that wo are to a great degree
fortunate or unfoitunnto simply by com
parison with others. And o"l got dis-
H"ieu wiui .uormon isianu, ami Hearing
county) imputing our means in a tent aud
a few " groceries," wo seized tho opportu
nity of n number of teams going that wny,
and struck out for tho upper country.
