seen, with a feeling that somo saddles do
not fit the human form nnd that many
valuable suggestions might be mndo to
thoso whoso occupation it is to manufacture
the article nbovo named, to their goucrnl
improvement. Tho object of our visit lies
quietly before ns, gently smoking nud
looking ns harmless aa possible. Wo havo
(as wo must consider it, judging from the
luck of former visitors,) the good fortune
to behold the crater in a calm Runuy day,
which enables us to onjoy nil the scenery
visibto from this perfect staud point, and
to appreciate all tho grandour of the pros
pect. May others liud tho elemonts as
propitious in their tour to this notable
spot I W cannot but admire, and con
gratulate ourselves upon tho comfortable
arrangements of this far-away hotel, whoso
chairs, lounges, beds, nnd not-to-lie.orgot-ten
cuisino are blessings, though enjoyed
after so hard a ride in tho saddle.

after C o'clock from llilo, and wero glad
to get up to a warm fire. We went down
into the crater this morning and did not
find as much action in the South Lake as
we had hoped. Thero were some eight or
nine cones and holes which were belching
out smoke and gate iu great quantities,
but we could see uo fire from tho edge of
the Lake.
Three of us, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Hall nud
myself, went down into the South Lake
from tho east side, and passing over tho
bed of the Lake we came up ou tho west
bnuk. While iu tho Lake wo had a fine
cbauce to look iuto oue of tho red hot
cones and could see the volcano tire at
work, and hissing with a great noise nt
times. At times we were almost suffocated
with the gates, but tho sight of the fire in
the cone was euough to pay for all the
trouble of ueltinR at it. Alter teeing the
crater wo all went .over to the sulphur
luuk and spent an Sour iu exptoriug and
collecting specimens. The crater is just
